Qingdao Trip Essentials 2026: Luggage, DiDi, & Alipay Tips

I mentioned in my previous post about preparing for a Qingdao day trip that I'd share a practical review after my visit, right?

Well, I actually went on September 5th, 2026!

This time, instead of just introducing iconic spots like Zhanqiao Pier or St. Michael's Cathedral, I've focused on practical essentials that could have caused real headaches on the ground, such as luggage storage, transportation, and mobile payments. These are the real-world tips I wish I had known beforehand.

I'll share detailed reviews of the attractions I actually visited—Zhanqiao Pier, Zhongshan Road, St. Michael's Cathedral, and Signal Hill Park—in separate upcoming posts, so stay tuned!

On that day, Qingdao had clear and warm weather, with temperatures rising to 88°F (31°C).

The forecast had predicted high humidity, but it actually wasn't that humid at all. There was no rain, making it quite pleasant for walking around.

1. Jiaodong Airport Luggage Storage: My Real Experience

The very first thing I did upon arriving at Qingdao Airport was store my luggage. Since it was a day trip, my actual belongings were just a backpack. However, I had duty-free purchases that could only be transported as checked baggage, so I brought a small, empty suitcase.

To avoid dragging my suitcase around, I decided to use Jiaodong Airport's baggage storage service. You'll find it on the 4th floor of the airport, at the very end of the B Check-in Counter area (deeper inside the airport departures hall).

The fee schedule is divided by size. My suitcase fell into the 20-26 inch category (large cabinet), so the 4-10 hour rate of 15 Chinese Yuan (CNY) applied.

I dropped off my luggage at 10:19 AM and picked it up at 4:19 PM, totaling about 6 hours of storage. The receipt showed the exact amount of 15 CNY, matching the fee schedule perfectly. Being able to explore the city light-handed without worrying about my bags is a service I highly recommend for any day trip!

2. DiDi All the Way - No Public Transportation for Me!

After storing my bags, I opted to use only DiDi (China's popular ride-hailing app, similar to Uber or Lyft) for getting around the city, instead of the subway or bus. This was mainly because I had limited time on my day trip.

The biggest convenience was being able to instantly call a car just by entering my destination in the app, eliminating the need to study public transit routes in an unfamiliar city. Since I could simply point to my destination on the map, there was hardly any need to communicate with the driver, which was a huge plus. DiDi even offers an automatic translation message for drivers, stating “I don't speak Chinese, please communicate via message,” which was incredibly helpful.

During this trip, I didn't use any public transportation at all, relying solely on DiDi for all my movements. I'll cover the specific order in which I visited Zhanqiao Pier, Zhongshan Road, St. Michael's Cathedral, and Signal Hill Park in separate upcoming articles.

3. Alipay First - My Credit Card Registration Woes

In places like Qingdao, where mobile payments are much more prevalent than credit cards, setting up Alipay is absolutely essential. WeChat Pay is also widely used, so you can choose either of these Chinese online payment methods to register, whichever you find more convenient.

I chose Alipay because it integrates seamlessly with DiDi.

I had installed the app and registered my card in advance before my trip. However, an unexpected situation arose.

First, I registered my Visa card, and it instantly showed “Added Successfully,” linking without any issues. I was able to use this card for DiDi payments without a hitch. But when I tried to register my Amex card next,

I received a message saying, “This card type is not supported,” preventing registration entirely.

Amex is listed as a supported card type, so I'll need to investigate why it didn't work. I haven't yet confirmed the reason for the failed registration. This happened recently when I was setting up my cards, so I'll check and provide an update!

Nevertheless, if you're planning a trip to Qingdao, I highly recommend bringing Visa or Mastercard rather than Amex. Experiencing firsthand that card compatibility can vary, it seems like a good idea to bring several cards and try them out one by one.

4. Transit Cards: Attempted Registration, but No Actual Use

Alipay has a “Transport” feature that allows you to get a QR code for using public transportation in Qingdao, like buses and subways. Additionally, if you're an iPhone user, Apple Wallet also supports Qingdao transit cards.

The registration process seemed quite straightforward, but I didn't complete it. Since I only used DiDi during my trip, I didn't actually need it. However, if you plan to use public transport, it's a good idea to set it up in advance.
