Qingdao, China: Top 5 Must-Try Restaurants

With China's visa-free entry now extended for another year,
it's the perfect time for a quick getaway to
are many of you probably planning a trip to **Qingdao**, right?
However, gathering information about China can be challenging,
often leading people to visit the same few restaurants.
Today, I'm going to introduce only the best places I visited
among all the **Qingdao restaurants** I tried!
**(I'll leave the Gaode map link in the comments!)**
📍 Our first recommended restaurant is **Waipo Jia**.
Located in **MixC Mall**, one of Qingdao's premier shopping centers,
this **chain restaurant** is a fantastic find.
It's beloved by both locals and tourists alike.
While it's an affordable chain from a tourist's perspective,
the interior design is surprisingly upscale,
and the restaurant itself is much larger than it appears from the outside.
The menu offers a wide range of dishes, starting from around 10 Yuan
up to dishes in the 60-70 Yuan range.
They serve many classic Chinese dishes that come to mind, such as **Mapo Tofu and Dongpo Pork**,
and many more.
While Waipo Jia restaurants across China can vary in price and portion size by region,
the **MixC Mall branch in Qingdao** stands out.
**The prices were incredibly reasonable, and the portions were generous!**
What's more, the spice flavors aren't too overpowering,
and the overall taste is consistently good,
so it's generally a crowd-pleaser.
For those embarking on their first trip to China, or specifically Qingdao,
this is the restaurant I'd most highly recommend!

📍 Our second spot is **Dahongmen**.
It's a bit further from the city center, so you'll need to take a taxi to get there,
but it's worth it for the delicious lamb skewers and a variety of other Chinese dishes.
**Lamb skewers can be ordered by the half-jin (half-catty)**,
and you can also order a wide array of other skewers, like **pickled cucumber or bell pepper skewers**,
and you can pair it all with their original draft beer!
And here's a fun highlight of this restaurant:
staff members walk around the tables with various skewers,
and if you see one you like, you can just grab it and enjoy!
Pretty unique, right?
We also ordered **Malalongxia** (spicy stir-fried crayfish), which was incredibly spicy and numbing,
but it had a delicious sweet and savory umami flavor.
Indoor smoking is permitted, which might be uncomfortable for some,
but if you don't mind that kind of atmosphere, you absolutely must visit!

📍 Our third restaurant is **Yongga Hot Pot**.
This is a hot pot chain with branches even in Korea,
and it's an **all-you-can-eat style restaurant.**
This means you can pick and choose just the ingredients you want to eat,
and even customize your sauce to your liking!
But there's something even more exciting.
The hot pot ingredients travel along a conveyor belt, just like sushi at a kaiten-zushi restaurant,
so you can pick them up right from your seat.
Beyond the usual ingredients like tofu and vegetables that we're all familiar with,
they even have unique ingredients like frog and duck blood,
so there's a 'real' abundance of fun in choosing what to eat.
What's more, with desserts like cream puffs and fruits,
and even meal items like mini burgers on the conveyor belt,
it's a restaurant where you can enjoy everything from appetizers to your main course and dessert,
all in one go!
For those who love hot pot,
or anyone curious about unique Chinese ingredients,
it's definitely worth a visit!

📍 Our fourth restaurant is **Chinese Lanzhou Lamian**.
While the three places I introduced earlier are relatively well-known,
this one is a true local gem among local spots.
Lanzhou Lamian is a noodle dish from the Lanzhou region,
and can be seen as the progenitor of ramen.
They offer a really diverse range of dishes, from lamian to daoxiao mian (knife-cut noodles),
and since it's a local restaurant, prices are around 10-20 yuan,
making it an affordable place for a casual visit.
I ordered **two dishes: beef lamian and stir-fried beef daoxiao mian**.
The beef noodles were clean and refreshing, much like Korean beef radish soup,
and it was also delicious with a spicy kick when chili oil was added.
And the daoxiao mian had a chewy, thick noodle texture,
which was great to chew on.
While the food tasted pretty standard,
I recommend this place for anyone who wants to experience the true local hospitality
at an authentic Chinese local restaurant!

📍Our fifth and final restaurant is **Haheeli**.
Located on Beer Street, directly opposite the Qingdao Beer Factory,
this restaurant allows you to enjoy fresh seafood, Chinese dishes, and draft beer.
Haheeli has a distinctly Chinese exterior,
but its interior is somewhat unassuming.
As Qingdao is renowned for its seafood,
the restaurant features aquariums where they keep live clams and oysters,
and a unique feature is that they catch and cook them right after you order.
Plus, you can watch the cooking process unfold right before your eyes,
so you get to enjoy both the eating and the viewing!
The oysters were incredibly plump and flavorful,
and the stir-fried clams were wonderfully succulent with a fantastic texture.
As I mentioned earlier, restaurants in Qingdao
serve up more food than you can possibly imagine.
It's not written on the menu, but at Haehamri (海蛤蜊),
if you ask, it's sometimes possible to order just half!
While the overall food taste is generally good,
for those who crave a diverse seafood spread, especially clams,
paired with a freshly poured draft beer,
Haehamri (海蛤蜊) might be the perfect spot for you.

China, a true culinary superpower,
boasts an incredible array of delicious dishes.
What's truly amazing is that in Qingdao, the cost of living is roughly half that of Korea,
and you'll get almost double the amount of food,
allowing you to have an incredibly satisfying trip!
All five restaurants I introduced today
were places where I had incredibly satisfying meals for the price,
ranging from popular must-visits to authentic local gems,
so you can definitely find one to suit your taste.
While they didn't make my top ranking,
there are still other famous and excellent restaurants worth checking out.

Waipojia offers a variety of Chinese dishes such as Mapo Tofu and Dongpo Pork, with prices ranging from around 10 Yuan to 60-70 Yuan. The Qingdao MixC branch is known for its affordable prices, generous portions, and mild spice flavors, making it enjoyable for everyone.
At Dahongmen, you can order lamb skewers by the half-jin (approx. 250g), and enjoy various other skewers like pickled cucumbers and bell pepper skewers, as well as Mala Longxia (spicy crawfish) and Yuanjiang draft beer. A unique feature is that staff members walk around tables with random skewers, allowing you to pick and eat the ones you want immediately.
Yongga Hot Pot operates as an all-you-can-eat restaurant where hot pot ingredients circulate on a conveyor belt, similar to a sushi train, allowing you to pick your desired items. Besides common tofu and vegetables, you can also find unique ingredients like frog and duck blood, as well as various desserts and meal items such as cream puffs, fruits, and mini burgers available on the belt.
At Lanzhou Lamian, you can savor a variety of Lanzhou-style noodle dishes at prices ranging from 10 to 20 Yuan. In particular, the beef ramen is clean and refreshing, similar to Korean beef radish soup, while the stir-fried beef dao xiao mian (knife-cut noodles) offers a delightfully chewy and thick texture.
