Phuket Airport to Patong: Your 2026 Transportation Guide
Planning your trip from Phuket Airport to Patong? Compare the Smart Bus, Grab/Bolt, and private transfers to find the most convenient and cost-effective way to start your Phuket adventure.
Quick answer
- Phuket Smart Bus costs around ~$3 and takes 2+ hours, best for solo or long-term travelers.
- Grab or Bolt taxis cost ~$18-~$27 and take about 40 minutes, but vehicle quality and space can vary.
- Pre-booked private transfers offer convenience and guaranteed vehicle size for ~$18-~$27.
- For groups of 2 or more, a pre-booked private transfer is highly recommended for comfort and ease.

Landing at Phuket International Airport (HKT) and heading to Patong? Be prepared for a bit of a journey! The distance to Patong Beach is quite a stretch, typically taking around 40 minutes by car. It's definitely worth planning your transfer ahead of time to ensure a smooth start to your vacation.
You've got three main options for getting to Patong from the airport: hailing a Grab or Bolt taxi, taking the Phuket Smart Bus, or pre-booking a private transfer. Let's break down the costs, travel times, and convenience of each to help you decide.
Phuket Smart Bus

On my trip with a friend, we opted for the Smart Bus to get from Phuket Airport to Patong. For our return journey from Patong back to the airport, we used a Grab taxi.
The Smart Bus is a solid option, especially if you're a solo traveler or on an extended trip with plenty of time. While anyone can ride it, there's a significant drawback: time. Between picking up passengers, making multiple stops, and the bus's generally slower pace, the journey can easily stretch to over 2 hours.

It's worth noting that Phuket's roads aren't always perfectly paved, and you'll encounter a fair share of winding routes.

While it's the most budget-friendly option at around ~$3 (100 THB), I generally don't recommend it if time is precious. Buses run hourly, so if your timing is off, you could easily spend 2 hours or more just waiting and traveling. Plus, it drops you off at Jungceylon, meaning you'll likely need to arrange further transport to your hotel, adding to the inconvenience.
Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab & Bolt)
You can easily summon a taxi using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Bolt. Locally, Bolt often offers slightly cheaper fares for longer distances, so it's a good alternative to consider.

However, using an app means you'll spend time waiting for a driver to accept your ride and then locating them at the airport. You also can't guarantee the condition or size of the vehicle. Typically, you'll get a compact sedan, which can feel cramped with two people and two suitcases. Often, only one suitcase fits in the trunk, leaving you to squeeze the other luggage into the back seat with passengers.
When comparing costs, there isn't a significant difference between app-hailed taxis and pre-booked private transfers, making a pre-arranged pickup often the better choice.
A Grab ride usually runs about 800-900 THB, while Bolt might be around 600-700 THB. Converted from the original Korean Won estimates (24,000-36,000 KRW), this is roughly ~$18 to ~$27. Pre-booked private transfers typically fall within the same price range.

To book, you'll typically input your arrival date (MM/DD/YYYY format, e.g., 10/23/2026), time, your hotel or drop-off location, and the number of passengers. For instance, let's search for a family of three.

You'll then see various vehicle types. As mentioned, for up to two people, a standard 5-seater sedan might suffice. However, for three or more passengers, especially with luggage, it's wise to choose a 7-seater or even a 9-seater to ensure everyone and everything fits comfortably. The price difference between vehicle types is usually not substantial, so opting for a more spacious ride is a smart move. With a pre-booked service, your driver will be waiting for you at the designated time.
Phuket Airport is generally smaller and less chaotic compared to other major airports in Thailand.

The pickup area isn't usually crowded, so you can simply head to the instructed spot, find your driver holding a sign, and hop right into your comfortable ride. It’s that easy!
Unless you're traveling solo like I sometimes do, if you're with two or more people, there's really no need to overthink it—a pre-booked private transfer is the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions
Aside from the 100 baht fare, what other inconveniences might I encounter when using the Smart Bus from Phuket Airport to the city?
The Smart Bus can take over 2 hours to reach your destination after boarding, and it operates with a 1-hour interval between buses. Additionally, it drops passengers off at the Jungceylon stop, which means you'll have the inconvenience of needing to travel to your accommodation from there.
What are the disadvantages of using Grab or Bolt taxis from Phuket Airport to the city compared to a pre-booked pickup taxi?
With Grab or Bolt taxis, it can take time to find a taxi and meet the driver, and the vehicle's condition cannot be guaranteed. They are usually small sedans, which can become full with just two people and two suitcases, meaning only one suitcase might fit in the trunk while the others need to be placed on the back seat.
When booking a Phuket Airport pickup taxi, what type of vehicle should I choose if three or more people are traveling with luggage?
If three or more people are traveling with luggage, a standard 5-seater vehicle might not accommodate all the suitcases. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a spacious 7-seater or 9-seater vehicle.
