Peter Luger Brooklyn Review: Walk-In & Open Run Tips

Here I am again for my second visit to the legendary Peter Luger Steak House!​

I had initially booked a table through Resy,

but plans shifted during my NYC trip due to the weather and other schedule changes,

so I suddenly ended up going to Peter Luger the very next day.

Which meant... it was time for an open run!!!!

I actually managed to be the very first person in line!

Here is my honest review of Peter Luger, a must-visit spot on any New York itinerary :>

Peter Luger price for 2: ~$500 (including tax & tip)

Opens at 11:45 AM, successful open run arriving 20 minutes early​

1. Peter Luger Location, Open Run, and Waiting Experience

The original Peter Luger is located on Broadway in Brooklyn.

The closest subway station is Marcy Av.

As you walk along Broadway,

you'll spot their iconic billboard mounted on the side of a nearby building.

Even the billboard has such a classic, vintage vibe!

Behind where the billboard is,

do you see that cathedral-like dome in the distance?

Right across from that building is Peter Luger Steak House.

They open at the slightly awkward time of 11:45 AM,

but we arrived around 11:17 AM

and were able to wait inside the vestibule shown in the photo on the left.

The photo on the right was taken at 11:36 AM.

By the way, of all these people waiting,

more than half actually have reservations,

so they aren't all waiting for walk-in spots!

No matter how early you get here for an open run,

if you don't have a reservation, you won't get seated right away. It's a bit of a bummer, isn't it? ㅠ

Since they operate on a reservation-first basis,

as soon as you walk in, they'll ask if you have a reservation.

Those without reservations are guided to a separate line,

while reserved guests are checked in first and led to their tables.

Once the reservation holders are mostly seated,

they start seating walk-in guests one by one!

Also, as written on the cashier counter in the photo above,

Peter Luger Steak House does NOT accept credit cards.​

It's cash-only (or US debit cards).

Peter Luger, a legendary NYC dining spot,

isn't just one massive dining hall.

Instead, it feels like a cozy house with several spacious dining rooms.

We were guided up to the second floor.

Some reviews mention feeling like they group Koreans or Asians together,

bordering on discrimination,

but honestly, there are just so many Korean tourists here (...)

No matter where we sat, there was bound to be another Korean table nearby!

Hahaha!

2. Peter Luger Steak Menu

While we were browsing the menu,

they served us the complimentary bread, butter, and their signature Peter Luger steak sauce.

I knew I had to save room for the steak...

but the bread was just so delicious that I couldn't stop devouring it 🍞.

Hilariously enough,

I realized I only took pictures of the Peter Luger wine menu.

But I highly, highly recommend ordering a glass of wine because...

While most restaurants pour you a tiny splash,

Peter Luger is incredibly generous with their wine pours!

Have you ever seen a glass of wine poured this generously? 🍷

With two of us,

we ordered the Steak for Two,

plus Creamed Spinach and Sauteed Onions for sides.

Actually, we ordered the Sauteed Onions by mistake...

The absolute must-order for most travelers is the

Sliced Tomato & Onions...

3. Peter Luger Steak for Two Price

The price of a Peter Luger Steak for Two was around $150 haha.

Since it was last December, that translates to over ~$128!

It's what we usually call a T-bone steak,

and our server explained that the left side of the bone is filet mignon (tenderloin),

and the right side is strip steak (sirloin),

before plating a couple of pieces for us.

The plates are served EXTREMELY hot,

so watch your hands!

Our sides: Sauteed Onions and Creamed Spinach.

Even though we ordered them by mistake, these onions were actually delicious,

hahaha!

But because they weren't raw onions,

we didn't have anything to cut through the richness like pickles would 😭

Peter Luger Steak cooked to a perfect medium-rare.

The steak was honestly, truly, phenomenally delicious! ❤️❤️

The strip steak melted in my mouth,

while the tenderloin was incredibly tender yet had that perfect juicy chew... 😭

It was so incredibly juicy

and my husband couldn't stop raving about it either! haha

It really made me think, American beef is truly the best.

And it paired absolutely beautifully with the red wine...!!!

The price isn't exactly budget-friendly,

but considering NYC prices, it's not outrageously expensive either.

Plus, if you wanted beef of this quality back home,

you'd probably pay just as much, if not more!

I'm definitely going back next time I visit NYC! 😎

Our meal came out to about $230,

and with tax, it was around $250,

so we just left a clean $300 (including tip) and walked out.

They give you chocolate coins when they bring the bill,

and those are actually so good 🤑

Already wishing I could go back!
