🇨🇳 Who is Panxiaoshao perfect for?
✔︎ Anyone looking for an alternative to the hyper-popular Hejiuyiqian
✔︎ Foodies eager to try a massive variety of Chinese BBQ skewers
✔︎ Travelers searching for a delicious, late-night food spot near The Bund

Originally, I planned on visiting Hejiuyiqian (the most famous lamb skewer chain in Shanghai) for dinner. I had heard rumors about the insane wait times, with friends booking around 6:00 PM and only getting seated right before closing. I thought, "Surely it can't be that bad!" Well, it was. When I tried to book at the No. 1 Department Store branch around 8:00 PM, reservations were already completely closed for the night. ✨️
Luckily, we found Panxiaoshao right near our hotel instead. And honestly? I ended up just as satisfied here as I would have been at Hejiuyiqian!

We wandered in past 11:00 PM without any reservations. Because they stay open late, we were able to sit back, relax, and enjoy our meal at a leisurely pace.
The restaurant is spacious, clean, and has a great casual, lively vibe that's perfect for winding down after a long day of sightseeing.

Unlike traditional spots where you grill at your table, the skewers here are served pre-grilled to perfection, keeping the table clean and smoke-free.

Once you order, they bring out clean plates and matching aprons to protect your clothes.
The Menu

You can easily order via QR code, but they also have helpful physical menus with English and Korean translations. Even if you don't speak Chinese, the staff is incredibly friendly and will happily use translation apps to communicate with you.
Our Top Recommendations

If you're not sure what to get, I highly recommend the Popular 2-Person Sampler Set A. It’s an amazing value and lets you try a wide variety of different meats and veggies instead of just sticking to standard lamb skewers.

After ordering, they serve water and some complimentary peanut caramels. Honestly, the candy wasn't really my thing, but it was a sweet gesture!

One of the coolest features at Panxiaoshao is the 4-sauce platter they serve with your meal:
🍅 Tomato Sauce: Pairs beautifully with pork and grilled vegetables
🍋 Lemon Sauce: Bright and zesty, perfect for chicken and chicken feet
🌶️ Classic Red Chili Powder: The ultimate go-to for all meat skewers
🌿 Herbal Pickled Sauce (Houttuynia): A unique, aromatic sauce that pairs great with tripe and beef
Mixing and matching the skewers with different sauces made the whole dining experience so much fun!

First up was the Crab Roe Scallops. They looked simple, but oh my goodness, they were an absolute flavor bomb! If I hadn't been so full by the end, I would have ordered another round of these instantly.

Next was the Grilled Mushrooms. The glaze they used was incredibly savory and delicious. ❤️

This was a mixed rice bowl similar to Bibimbap. Honestly, neither my brother nor I were big fans of this one. It wasn't terrible, but with so many other amazing things to eat, it felt a bit unnecessary. You can safely skip this!

And now for the main event: the skewers! ❤️ This is exactly what a Shanghai food trip is all about. And guess what? This wasn't even all of them!

As you eat, they continuously bring out fresh, hot skewers to your table. It felt like an endless feast of deliciousness! ❤️

Among the massive variety, this cartilage skewer stood out. It had a wonderfully crunchy texture and a deeply savory, rich flavor.

And then... there was the Grilled Sweet Toast Skewer. At first, I was skeptical. Sweet bread on a skewer? It sounded like it would be greasy and weird. But as a food writer, I had to try it to give an honest review.
Oh my gosh. It was absolutely life-changing. It was crispy, sweet, buttery, and unbelievably delicious. Even though we were practically bursting, we kept stuffing our faces with it. My brother eventually tapped out, but writing this now, I deeply regret not eating his share too. If I ever go back to Panxiaoshao, I am ordering this first!

For drinks, I was tempted to get a Coke, but the gorgeous pink guava juice caught my eye, so I went with that. My brother paired his skewers with a ice-cold draft beer!

For dessert, we tried their signature Basque Guava Cheesecake topped with melting cheese. While it looked beautiful and made for a great photo, the taste was just okay—not a must-have.
✔︎ Final Thoughts on Panxiaoshao (The Bund, Shanghai)
Our total bill came out to around 390 CNY (approximately $53). While this was about $19 more than what we spent at Hejiuyiqian the following night, we got a massive amount of food and got to sample so many unique, high-quality dishes.
If you want to avoid the massive 3-hour waits at Hejiuyiqian or need a fantastic late-night dining spot near The Bund, Panxiaoshao is a spectacular choice that I highly recommend!
