Craving authentic, handmade udon near Paju's Unjeong Station? Insaeng Udon offers generous portions and rich, savory broth at unbeatable prices. A must-try for any food lover!
My first time visiting Unjeong Station, and before heading to the Forest of Wisdom, I was on the hunt for a solo-dining friendly spot. That's when I stumbled upon Insaeng Udon.
The name 'Insaeng Udon' literally translates to 'Udon of a Lifetime.' Naturally, I was curious to see if it would live up to its name, so I stepped inside.

Insaeng Udon Location

Insaeng Udon is also known as a popular restaurant near Paju Starfield. It's about a 0.5-mile (10-minute) walk from Unjeong Station. If you're driving, there's surface parking available within the building (OfficeTel parking code: Jong3100, 1 hour free parking, up to 30 cars).

From a distance, the shops seemed quite small, and the restaurant itself isn't huge, making it the perfect cozy spot for solo dining.
Interior

There are no two or four-person tables; all seating is counter-style. When I arrived at lunchtime, I noticed many other solo diners, just like me.

There are coat hangers behind the wall. My only minor gripe was the lack of space for bags or other belongings. However, there was enough room on the seat next to me, so I just placed my bag there.
Menu

Here's the Insaeng Udon menu. Orders are placed via a self-service kiosk. Unfortunately, the fryer was out of order during my visit, so pork cutlets (donkatsu) weren't available. Haha.
A basic Udon starts at ~$5, while Yubu Udon (fried tofu skin) and Eomuk Udon (fish cake) are ~$6. The spicy Udon series is also ~$6. The Perilla Oil Bibim Udon (mixed udon) at the bottom of the menu also gets rave reviews from customers, and during the summer, the cold udon is incredibly popular.

After ordering and finding a seat, they bring water first. Paper cups and tissues are conveniently located overhead for easy access.

Side dishes include kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi) and danmuji (pickled radish). You'll also find chili powder and pepper to sprinkle on your udon (pepper on udon? Interesting!).

I also ordered a rice ball for ~$2.

Whoa, hot! Time to get my hands dirty and mix it up.

It's been a while since I've made rice balls by hand! I remember doing this a few years back at a company dinner after-party.

The udon's presentation? Absolutely stunning! It's generously topped with crown daisy, shredded seaweed, and plenty of fried tofu skin, almost completely hiding the noodles beneath.

Since I ordered the Spicy Yubu Udon, there's a flavorful seasoning paste hidden within.

The udon noodles themselves were slightly thinner than typical udon.
This is a Korean-style udon, with a broth simmered for over 3 hours daily using anchovies. The noodles are also house-made, developed to an optimal thickness. You can definitely feel the chewy and springy texture with every bite.

The rice ball was generously sized and had a wonderfully savory aroma, which I particularly enjoyed. As for the udon, it was simply fantastic. The portions were so ample that I initially thought I'd have to leave some, but it was so delicious I ended up finishing every last drop.
So there you have it, my recommendation for Insaeng Udon, a true udon gem near Paju Unjeong Station. It's a fantastic spot for an affordable and delicious lunch or dinner, perfect for anyone in the area or passing by Paju Starfield. Definitely worth a visit!
