Well, I recently discovered just such a place: Byeokchoji Arboretum in Paju, South Korea.
I initially went expecting a simple stroll, but I was genuinely surprised by its sheer scale and diverse beauty.
From tranquil ponds reminiscent of Monet's Garden in Giverny to peaceful forest trails and grand European-style gardens akin to Versailles, this arboretum truly has it all in one stunning location.
It's absolutely brimming with incredible photo opportunities, making it a perfect recommendation for anyone seeking a unique day trip from Seoul or a romantic outing in Paju. 🌿

Byeokchoji Arboretum is nestled in Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si.
While Paju often brings to mind popular spots like Heyri Art Village or Paju Book City, Byeokchoji Arboretum is situated further inland to the east.
It's most convenient to visit by car, and there's ample parking right in front of the arboretum.
We drove from Seoul, and it was a perfect distance for a half-day escape from the city hustle.
Tickets can be purchased via Naver booking or directly on-site. If you choose Naver booking, please note that same-day use is not possible, and you'll need to exchange your reservation for a physical ticket at the on-site ticket booth before entry.
On-site purchases, however, can be used for same-day entry.

Byeokchoji Arboretum is divided into six distinct themed areas: Space of Excitement, Space of Myth, Space of Healing, Space of Freedom, Space of Contemplation, and Space of Impression.
From a practical perspective, I found it easier to navigate by thinking of it in two main sections: the natural gardens centered around Byeokchoji Pond to the left of the entrance, and the European-style gardens around Mally's Garden to the right.
Near the entrance, you'll find Munch Munch Snack/Coffee, which offers light meals and beverages. There's also Botanic Brunch on the second floor.
We visited after lunch, so we didn't use these facilities, but given how much time you can spend exploring the arboretum, it's a great option to grab a meal inside.
What really caught my eye was the Flower Hill Garden!
This glass greenhouse is absolutely brimming with lush green plants and vibrant flowers. Even after finishing our main tour, I spent a long time admiring the blooms here. Haha!
Most paths are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, though there are occasional unpaved sections, as shown in the picture below. The inclines are minimal.

If you head left from the entrance, you'll find serene forest paths and the tranquil pond. Venture to the right, and the atmosphere dramatically shifts!
Despite it being mid-August, which can be quite warm, we visited in the late afternoon. The heavily wooded paths offered plenty of shade, making for a pleasant walk.
It's fascinating how one arboretum can house such distinct garden styles!
Starting our journey to the left, we first encountered Byeokchoji Pond, which lends its name to the arboretum.
This expansive pond is densely covered with water lilies and lotus leaves, encircled by weeping willows and a lush forest.
In photos, it might remind you a bit of Monet's famous garden in Giverny, France. However, the harmony of traditional Korean pavilions and wooden bridges also gives it the distinct feel of a classic Korean garden.
We visited in the late afternoon, and as the sun began to dip, the sight of it setting behind the pond was absolutely breathtaking.
While vibrant flowerbeds are great for photos, I personally found this area much more peaceful and perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Crossing over to the opposite side and passing through the gates of Mally's Garden, the ambiance completely transforms 180 degrees.
This was, without a doubt, the most striking part of Byeokchoji Arboretum for me.
Mally's Garden is inspired by the Château de Marly, a royal residence built west of the Palace of Versailles in 17th-century France.
Once you pass through the ornate golden gates, a grand, linear garden adorned with classical sculptures unfolds before you. As you venture deeper, you're greeted by stunning fountains, marble statues, and meticulously manicured trees and flowers.
It genuinely feels as if you've been transported to a European garden, even if just for a moment!
We definitely spent more time taking photos here than actually walking! 😂
Whether you pose by the European-style fountains or use the long, statue-lined path as your backdrop, your photos will capture a magnificent sense of space and elegance.
Given its grand scale and beauty, it's no surprise that Mally's Garden has been a popular filming location for famous K-dramas like *Vincenzo*, *Beautiful World*, and *Penthouse*, as well as numerous photoshoots and variety shows.

When we visited in mid-August, the trees and pond were a lush green, giving it a strong summer garden feel. However, the arboretum hosts various seasonal flowers and festivals throughout the year.
Therefore, it's always a good idea to check their official website for current blooming schedules, festival dates, and operating hours before planning your trip.
Also, the grounds are incredibly vast! We spent over 2 hours walking and taking pictures, and still didn't manage to explore every section.
If you plan to take photos, walk around the pond, and explore Mally's Garden and the Flower Hill Garden, I recommend allocating plenty of time.
For summer visits, I found that late afternoon, when the sun's intensity mellows, was a great time to explore.

Byeokchoji Arboretum is a fantastic destination for those seeking a peaceful stroll near Seoul, a lovely outing with parents, or a picturesque spot for couples to capture beautiful memories.
I was initially concerned about the heat in mid-August, but with so many trees, it wasn't as hot as I expected!
It definitely made me think it would be absolutely gorgeous to visit in spring or fall, too.
I'd love to go back during a different season when the flowers are in full bloom! 😊

If visiting in the summer, the late afternoon, when the sun's intensity has lessened, is recommended as there are many shaded areas under the trees, making it pleasant for a stroll.
Pets are not allowed. Key viewing points include Byeokchoji Pond, reminiscent of Giverny, the Garden of Mali Castle, inspired by a 17th-century French Versailles annex, and tranquil forest paths.
