Ready for your Shimanami Kaido adventure? Step 1:
Renting a bike!
As a renowned cycling route,
there are quite a few places where you can rent bicycles.
Among them,
when renting a bike in Onomichi,
I've narrowed down the best
three spots for you.
1. Where to Rent a Bicycle in Onomichi?

❗️ 3 Onomichi Bicycle Rental Shops ❗️
Shop | Recommended For |
Shimanami Rental Cycle | Shimanami Completionists |
ONOMICHI BASE | Day-trippers ⭐️E-BIKE Pass Usable |
Giant Store | Road Bike Riders |
Shimanami Rental Cycle is a public rental service where you can easily find a bike that suits you, while ONOMICHI BASE is linked to the E-BIKE Pass and is more optimized for day-trippers.
If you're an avid cyclist, you'll likely love the Giant Store, as it offers a wide range of high-quality bicycles, so you might prefer this option.
2. Shimanami Rental Cycle
Public Rental Service

If you're new to renting a bicycle in Onomichi, this is a popular choice! They operate rental terminals (bike stations) on every island from Onomichi all the way to Imabari, making it super convenient for a one-way ride.
Key Information
Category | Details |
Location | In front of Onomichi Station |
Operating Hours | 08:00~19:00 |
Helmets | Available for Rent |
One-Way Return | Available |
The biggest advantage here is that
one-way returns are possible, and with terminals
in multiple locations, returning your bike is quite easy.

However, popular electric-assist bicycles can book up quickly (you should make a reservation at least 3 days in advance).
I started looking about a week before my trip, and I panicked when I saw they were fully booked, likely because it was a weekend. But when I checked again today, some spots had opened up! To avoid any unnecessary stress, I highly recommend making your reservation in advance.

📍 Bicycle Rental Onomichi Station
1-10 Higashigoshochō, Onomichi, Hiroshima 722-0036 Japan
3. ONOMICHI BASE

If you're less about tackling the entire Shimanami Kaido route head-on
and more interested in a casual day trip to nearby islands like Mukaishima, Innoshima, or Ikuchijima, then using this service is a smart move!
Key Information
Item | Details |
Location | Approx. 5-min walk from Onomichi Station |
Business Hours | 09:00~18:00 |
Helmet | Provided |
One-way drop-off | Not possible |
You can use the E-BIKE pass, which includes a lighter, less physically demanding E-BIKE (compared to electric-assist bicycles) and ferry tickets (to Innoshima/Ikuchijima), making it a total steal! If I had been planning a one-day trip, I would have definitely used this. (I'm planning a 2-night, 3-day course, so... 😀)

Another strong point is that booking is super easy, as you can make reservations through Klook!

📌 What's included (E-BIKE Pass)
E-BIKE + Ferry Fare + Helmet
*E-BIKE Rental (1 day)
*Onomichi ↔ Innoshima Ferry (one-way): 110 yen
*Onomichi ↔ Ikuchijima Ferry (one-way): 1,500 yen
I looked it up, and renting an E-BIKE from a public rental shop for a day costs a whopping 8,000 yen~ And since you can't rent it for more than a day anyway, it's great to be able to ride the most comfortable bike at such a reasonable price.

4. Giant Store Onomichi (U2 Cafe)
The last bicycle rental shop I'll introduce is called Giant Store. This place is a multi-purpose facility named U2, combining a cafe, accommodation, and a rental shop all in one.

It's a renovated old warehouse and is often recommended as part of the travel itinerary if you visit Onomichi.

Basic Information
Item | Details |
Location | Approx. 5-min walk from Onomichi Station |
Business Hours | 09:00~18:00 |
Helmet | Provided |
One-way drop-off | Possible (Road bikes only) |
You can rent and return at two locations, Onomichi and Imabari, allowing for one-way rides and drop-offs.

The bikes are in excellent condition, and professional staff will help you with size settings. There's also a wide variety of road bikes, so I recommend this place for those who want a more professional cycling experience.
❗️ Planning to stay overnight? ❗️

This accommodation has many tempting features for cyclists: you can check-in with your bike (?!), store your bike on a rack inside the room, and even has a maintenance area.
Given how wonderful the space is, rooms can fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so I highly recommend booking in advance. (While Onomichi is a smaller city, it's incredibly popular with both Japanese and Western travelers!)

✔️ If you're looking for value for money, choose the Public Rental Cycle.
✔️ If you're on a day trip or a 1-day tourist, ONOMICHI BASE.
✔️ If you want to truly enjoy it, go for the GIANT Store.
There are many other bicycle rental shops, but
I've narrowed down the best ones for you.
I've organized them here.
Honestly, Onomichi is quite a distance
from Hiroshima city,
and I've noticed many people only visit the
Ropeway Observatory.
Since you've come all this way,
why not rent a bicycle in Onomichi
and take a day trip to the nearby islands?
How about it?
I'll wrap up this post with that little suggestion. :)
