Nara Park with Kids Review 2026: Dealing with Bold Deer
Visited Japan's Nara Park with our 8 and 3-year-olds! Even without deer crackers, the deer were bold, rummaging through bags. Here are our essential tips, from deer droppings to strollers and safety with kids.
Quick answer
- Getting to Nara Park from Osaka Namba by Kintetsu train costs ~$4.
- Deer are active and may approach and search bags even without crackers.
- Avoid feeding deer crackers to young children, and don't feed other items.
- Wear comfortable, easily cleaned shoes due to abundant deer droppings.
- A stroller is essential for young children as the park is quite large.
On our trip to Osaka,
there was one place I really wanted to visit with my kids:
Nara Park
The thought of deer roaming freely
made me imagine how amazed my children would be.
But even before we set off,
I had a slight worry.
I'd heard stories that if you hold deer crackers (senbei),
the deer would rush at you.
Since this trip was with my two kids, aged 8 and 3,
we decided not to buy any senbei at all.
But guess what?
Even without senbei, the deer approached us directly,
and even rummaged through our bags, creating quite a commotion, haha!
Having experienced it firsthand, I realized there were more things to know than I expected
when visiting Nara Park with children.

Nara Park's Deer: More Assertive Than You Might Think?
Upon arriving at Nara Park, deer were everywhere!
The deer didn't shy away from people;
they roamed naturally among the tourists.
It was both fascinating and adorable to see,
but the deer at the entrance were a bit different.
Perhaps because it's where most people gather,
those deer were quite assertive.
Approaching closely was standard,
and some deer even acted a bit rough.
It made me realize that not all deer are gentle.

Especially with deer that had antlers,
I made sure my kids didn't get too close.
Even when a deer approached, instead of automatically touching it,
we observed its behavior and kept our distance.
If a deer seemed aggressive,
it's better to avoid it rather than getting too close for no reason.
Deer Crackers (Senbei): You Don't Need Them if You Go with Kids
When you think of Nara Park, deer senbei are usually the first thing that comes to mind, right?
There were also stories that if you feed them, the deer will bow their heads in greeting, so I was curious.
But we felt it was a good decision not to buy any senbei.

Even though we had no food at all,
the deer still approached us first.
They even rummaged through the bag I was carrying,
and chased after the kids, trying to go through their bags too!
From a child's perspective, it's certainly enough to be startled, right?
If we had been holding food,
I imagine even more deer might have swarmed us.

So, personally, if you're with young children,
I don't recommend the deer senbei experience.
You don't necessarily need to give them food;
there are plenty of opportunities to see the deer up close.
We didn't buy a single senbei,
and still had a fantastic time watching the deer.
Watch Out for Papers, Not Just Bags!
Seeing how interested the deer were in our bags,
I realized we needed to be mindful of them.
Especially children's bags,
as deer can easily get to them,
it's best to be extra cautious.
And you also need to be careful with paper.

Since deer will even try to eat paper,
it's best not to leave things like receipts, tissues, or paper bags
lying around outside your bag.
Keep them securely inside your bag,
and dispose of any trash immediately.
These are things deer shouldn't be eating, after all.
Beyond deer senbei, it's generally best not to casually offer them any other food items.
Nara Park Deer Poop: There's A Lot Of It!
This is something I really want to emphasize:
when you go to Nara Park,
don't wear your fancy shoes, haha!
Just as the deer roam freely,
there's also a lot of deer droppings.
You'll find them on the grass and even on the walking paths,
so you really need to watch your step.

Kids, especially, might be so absorbed in watching the deer
that they don't pay attention to the ground.
I constantly found myself reminding my kids to watch their step.
While it looks super green and pretty in pictures,
the reality is you'll be dodging deer droppings as you walk!
Instead of brand-new or precious shoes,
I highly recommend comfy sneakers that are easy to clean.

Visiting Nara Park with Kids:
Is a Stroller a Must?
If you're bringing little ones along,
I'd say a stroller is absolutely essential!
Nara Park is much more expansive than you might imagine.
Unless you're just popping in to see the deer briefly at the entrance,
you'll find yourself walking quite a distance.
We brought a stroller for our 3-year-old,
and it was definitely a smart move!

Also, pack a hat or a parasol!
It's a vast open park, so you'll get a lot of sun exposure,
and the sun was pretty intense even when we were there.
It's also a good idea to bring water for the kids.
While seeing the deer is fantastic,
it's definitely better to take breaks and go at your children's pace,
keeping an eye on their energy levels.
Is Nara Park Worth Visiting with Kids?
Absolutely!
It's truly something special to see deer roaming freely, not behind a zoo fence, but right up close!
It was such a unique experience for the kids.

Approaching them without caution just because they're cute?
Not recommended!
Especially the deer near the entrance –
in our experience, they seemed a bit more boisterous and assertive.
It's definitely best to keep your distance from deer with antlers
or any that are acting aggressively.
And if you're visiting with kids,
there's no real need to purchase senbei (deer crackers).

You can always observe them from a slight distance
without feeding them, just like we did!
Even though we had to be mindful of our shoes because of all the deer droppings
and keep a close watch on our bags,
it was undeniably a worthwhile place to visit with the kids.
So, if you're planning a trip to Nara Park,
it's great to go with an understanding of these practical realities,
rather than just expecting cute deer!
