In beautiful Okinawa, there are two main zoos that families love to visit:

Neo Park is located in Nago City in the northern region, while Okinawa Zoo & Museum is located in Okinawa City in the central region.

Depending on traffic, there is a difference in travel time when driving from Okinawa's Naha Airport to each zoo.

2. Neo Park

Neo Park is a fantastic animal and plant theme park located in Nago City, northern Okinawa.

You can see a diverse range of animals and plants, including flamingos and capybaras, and even enjoy the fun experience of feeding the animals yourself!

While you can purchase tickets on-site at Neo Park, buying them online in advance can save you about ~$2 per person on your travel budget!

Here are the 4 main zones of Neo Park:​

This is the very first zone you'll encounter when you enter Neo Park: the **Flying Cage**, beautifully modeled after Lake Nakuru in Kenya, Africa.

A colorful variety of African birds, including elegant **flamingos**, roam and fly completely free here.

True to their motto, **"Zero Distance from Animals,"** you can get incredibly close to them!

The Meeting Plaza serves as the **Petting Zoo**, a wonderful space where you can interact with, pet, and **feed various animals** like capybaras, giant tortoises, Shiba Inus, guinea pigs, and puppies.

Please note that animal feed can only be purchased with cash, so make sure to bring some **Japanese Yen (JPY) cash** with you!

While the guinea pigs and capybaras were absolutely adorable, the **giant tortoises** were truly mind-blowing. I've never seen tortoises this huge before!

You can tour Neo Park on a train that **recreates the historic light railway** that actually ran in Okinawa back in 1914.

This facility is dedicated to researching the conservation and breeding of rare wild animals from around the world.​

It's home to a variety of rare exotic animals, including squirrel monkeys and sloths.​

It takes about 3 hours to fully explore everything, from the Petting Zoo to the light railway train.

3. Okinawa Children's World (Kodomo no Kuni)

A great place to visit with toddlers in Okinawa, Japan

Okinawa Children's World is a wonderful theme park that combines a zoo and a children's museum.

With about 150 different animal species, it features a wide range of activities including amusement rides, fishing, and hands-on programs.

Admission is free for everyone from babies up to junior high schoolers; paid tickets are only required for high school students and older.

The zoo is an eco-friendly haven home to over 1,000 animals from around 150 different species.

You can feed some of the animals through the fences, and they even have scheduled times for pony rides!

The animal enclosures were incredibly spacious, and there was plenty of distance between them, so the animals didn't seem stressed at all.

Inside Children's Land, there is a mini amusement park.

It features a carousel, a train, and go-karts. You'll need to buy tickets for the carousel and train (400 yen / ~$2), while the go-karts can be ridden by inserting a 100-yen (~$1) coin.

There was also a lovely little spot where you could buy things that kids absolutely love, like cotton candy and balloon animals.

At the Wonder Museum, there is an interactive sensory exhibition space designed to spark children's curiosity and imagination with hands-on science play, creative crafts, and DIY activities.

They could also enjoy playing with wooden toys and puzzles.

Outside, there is a massive net playground—a fantastic space where kids of all ages, from toddlers to older children, can play together.

We were able to enjoy the water play area, which featured floor fountains and a water wall, at no extra charge.

​The water play area is quite shallow, making it perfectly safe for toddlers to play in and a great way to cool off from the sweltering heat.

I highly recommend packing a change of clothes and a towel to make the most of the water play area.

There are also outdoor simple showers and changing rooms available on-site.

It took us about 3 hours and 30 minutes to fully explore everything, from seeing the diverse animals to visiting the museum, the water play area, and the mini amusement park.

Here is a breakdown of our recommended spot for each scenario when comparing Okinawa's two major zoos: Neo Park and Okinawa Zoo & Museum.

Since Okinawa is a long, narrow island, traveling back and forth between the south and north takes a chunk of time. If you already have plans to travel up north, it's a great idea to stop by Neo Park on your way!

If you want to interact directly and bond with the animals, Neo Park is definitely the place to go.

On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a wide variety of activities in one single place, then Okinawa Zoo & Museum is your best bet.

You can enjoy everything from animal encounters and a mini amusement park to water play areas and an interactive children's museum.

5. Pro-Tips from 3-Year-Old Traveler Bbaekkom

Be sure to bring plenty of Yen cash for buying animal feed and riding the amusement rides.

The minimum recommended time to tour the zoo is at least 2 hours, so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.

If you visit Okinawa Zoo & Museum, toddlers simply won't be able to resist the water play area, so absolutely pack a change of clothes and a towel!
