for your summer vacation, listen up! haha
I recently went on a healing family trip
to Nagoya!
Since we were traveling with a big group of six,
renting a car made so much more sense than taking public transit.
After searching around,
I booked a car through Klook, which had
the best value and the most reviews.
To start with the conclusion: we were absolutely thrilled!
If you're traveling with a big family, friends, or as a couple
to the beautiful towns near Nagoya
(such as Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Lake Suwa, etc.),
renting a car is an absolute must.
We spent around ~$288 for a 4-day, 3-night rental
and got so much value out of it.

Location & Accessibility (Pick-up & Drop-off Route)
To make our itinerary as efficient as possible,
Chubu Centrair International Airport Pick-up ➡️ Nagoya Station Return
was the option we went with.
Even with a different drop-off location, the price difference was only about
~$26.
Being able to load up our bags and head out immediately after landing
made things so comfortable for my parents,
and on the last day, we just dropped the car off at Nagoya Station
and enjoyed a 2-day city tour.
Not having to struggle with luggage
while traveling from the airport to downtown
was hands down the best part.
The Pick-up Process
✔️ Essential Checklist for Car Rental
- Your domestic driver's license
- International Driving Permit (IDP) (An absolute must!)
- Passport and booking confirmation
Once we arrived at the airport,
the pick-up process went incredibly smoothly.
We chatted with the agency via WhatsApp,
and their replies were so fast—no waiting around at all!
Best of all, the messages were automatically
translated, which made communicating incredibly easy.
When we went to the meeting spot,
a friendly Chinese staff member was waiting to greet us.
Thanks to the auto-translation in our chat, I had no idea—what a fun twist!
Though there wasn't an extensive walkthrough of the car,
they guided us directly to the vehicle
and got us on our way quickly, which was super convenient.
Vehicle Review (8-Seater Nissan Serena)
Since we were traveling as a group of six,
and needed plenty of space for luggage,
we decided to book an 8-seater Nissan Serena
as our vehicle of choice.
✅ Seats & Comfort
The interior was so clean and the seats were cozy.
Even with six of us, it didn't feel cramped at all,
and everyone had a very comfortable ride to the countryside towns.
☑️ Trunk Space:
The booking page mentioned it could fit
up to three suitcases,
so I was a little bit worried.
We ended up bringing 24-inch suitcases anyway,
but everyone else brought
smaller 20-inch carry-on bags just in case.
Once we actually loaded everything in,
even after fitting three 24-inch suitcases,
we still had plenty of trunk space left over.
So if you're a heavy packer, there's absolutely no need to worry!
☑️Registering an Additional Driver
If you want to add another driver,
you can easily do so on-site.
Just keep in mind there is an extra charge of about 1,000 JPY (~$6) per day
for each additional driver!
Real Driving Tips & Road Conditions
The most nerve-wracking moment of renting a car in Japan!
As you probably know, Japan has the driver's seat on the right,
and vehicles drive
on the left side of the road,
so it can be a bit confusing at first.
To avoid accidentally driving into oncoming traffic,
make sure to stay extra focused
and take it slow during the first few miles!
As soon as we picked up our car,
we headed straight to Lake Suwa, a charming town
famous as the backdrop for the anime film "Your Name".

The drive from Nagoya Airport through Nagoya city center
was quite busy and complex, so my hands were sweating a little! 💦
But! once you get out of downtown Nagoya,
the highways and countryside roads are quiet, peaceful,
and incredibly easy to navigate.
Even if you're a beginner driver, as long as you're careful in the city,
you'll get the hang of it in no time.

I compared several rental platforms,
and Klook definitely had the best rates,
thanks to its great discounts and comprehensive insurance options.
For a large 8-seater vehicle for 4 days (3 nights),
we paid about ~$288.
When you split that among 6 people, it's incredibly cost-effective compared to public transit!

Exploring the Surroundings
Thanks to our rental car,
we didn't have to lug heavy bags around or stress about train timetables.
We could take our time
and truly immerse ourselves in these charming countryside towns—
it was the perfect family vacation.
