When I was planning my trip to Nagoya, I knew the Meitetsu line was the way to go from the airport to Nagoya Station. But knowing *what* to do and actually *doing* it are two different things!
I found myself completely lost trying to figure out how to buy tickets, where to buy them, and which of the many train types to take. It was a bit overwhelming, to say the least.
I arrived in Nagoya bright and early, eager to kick off my first day's itinerary, but the whole process of navigating the Meitetsu line was surprisingly confusing. I wasted precious time and energy just trying to get oriented.
Even within the Meitetsu system, I couldn't decide between the regular Meitetsu Express and the faster μ-SKY. The platforms were a maze, and I just couldn't seem to figure out which train was which.
Today, I'm going to clear up all that confusion for you! I'll break down the easiest and most cost-effective ways to get from Nagoya's Centrair Airport to Nagoya Station, covering everything from purchasing Meitetsu and μ-SKY tickets to understanding which train to board and where.
Don't get lost like I did! This guide will solve all your Nagoya Airport transfer worries.
Getting from Nagoya Airport to Nagoya Station
From Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO), you primarily have two train options to reach Nagoya Station or Sakae Station:
✔ Meitetsu Express (Airport Access)
Travel Time: Approximately 37-41 minutes
Fare: Around ~$7 USD one-way for adults
Features: Best value, open seating (non-reserved)
✔ μ-SKY Limited Express (ミュースカイ)
Travel Time: Approximately 28 minutes
Fare: Meitetsu base ticket (~$7 USD) + μ-SKY surcharge (450 JPY) = Total around ~$11 USD
Features: All seats reserved, fastest option, luggage racks
Simply put, you buy a basic Meitetsu ticket. If you're happy with an open seat, you take the Meitetsu Express. If you prefer a guaranteed seat and a faster journey, you purchase an additional μ-SKY surcharge ticket.

Meitetsu Express vs. μ-SKY: Which to Choose?
✔ Meitetsu Express
With just your basic ticket, you can hop right on. It's open seating, so you just grab any available spot. However, during peak season or busy hours, you might find yourself standing.
The journey takes about 37-41 minutes, which is still quite fast. It's perfectly fine if you're traveling with just one suitcase. Think of it like a comfortable commuter train, similar to some subway lines you might find in major cities.
✔ μ-SKY Limited Express
The μ-SKY is an all-reserved seating train. You'll need to purchase the basic Meitetsu ticket (around ~$7 USD) PLUS an additional μ-SKY surcharge of 450 JPY.
It's significantly faster, taking only about 28 minutes – more than 10 minutes quicker than the regular express. Plus, it has dedicated luggage storage areas. The experience is comparable to a high-speed intercity train, like an Amtrak Acela or Eurostar.
Comparing the Meitetsu Express and μ-SKY, the Meitetsu Express is definitely the go-to for budget travelers!
However, if you're tired after a long flight and don't want to stand with your luggage, the μ-SKY is a far better choice.
For those needing to get somewhere quickly, or who simply want a comfortable, guaranteed seat, the μ-SKY comes highly recommended.
I've ridden both, and I'll share my insights on how to buy tickets and identify the right train, especially for first-time visitors.
How to Take the Train from Nagoya Airport
Meitetsu & μ-SKY
I made the mistake of thinking I could just buy tickets on arrival, without pre-booking. This was a huge error!
Nagoya is incredibly popular, especially in 2026, and the ticket machines often have long lines. Even with English language options, it was still confusing to figure out which ticket to buy. I even bought the wrong ticket once and had to go through the hassle of getting a refund!
Also, buying tickets on the spot means paying the full price. You can often snag a slightly cheaper deal by booking in advance online! Learn from my mistake and pre-purchase your tickets.
➡︎ Pre-booked Meitetsu ticket: around ~$7 USD
When you pre-book, you receive a QR code that lets you bypass the ticket machines entirely and go straight through the turnstiles! No more fumbling with purchases or confusing options.

Once you have your ticket (or QR code), if you're taking the Meitetsu Express, simply scan your QR code and head directly to Platform 3.
There are Platforms 1, 2, and 3, and with all the Japanese signage, it's easy to get confused. The trains all look similar too!
I mistakenly went to Platform 1 and missed a train... so make sure you head straight for Platform 3.
The interior of the Meitetsu Express trains is much like a typical subway car. If the train you're on looks sleek, modern, and has an atmosphere similar to a high-speed rail, get off immediately – that's the μ-SKY!
The Meitetsu Express takes about 38 minutes to reach Nagoya Station or Sakae Station. If you manage to get a seat, the journey feels quite quick.
Now, let me tell you about the μ-SKY experience.
For my second trip to Nagoya, I opted for the μ-SKY Limited Express for a more comfortable ride.
I pre-booked my basic Meitetsu ticket online from home. Then, I purchased the additional μ-SKY surcharge ticket on arrival at the station. You can buy this at the information desk located to the right of the ticket gates, not at the regular vending machines.

When you purchase your μ-SKY reserved seat ticket, you'll choose your preferred train departure time and be assigned a specific car and seat number, just like on high-speed trains. Then, you're all set to board!
If you accidentally board a μ-SKY train with only a basic Meitetsu ticket (like I almost did!), you'll have to pay an additional 500 JPY surcharge on board. So, it's best to get your μ-SKY surcharge ticket beforehand.
The μ-SKY definitely offers a superior experience – the train is in excellent condition, the reserved seats are comfortable and spacious, and it's incredibly fast.
It's a fantastic option, especially for your last day when you're likely tired heading back to the airport.
And since you can get the basic Meitetsu ticket at a great price online, adding the 450 JPY surcharge for μ-SKY isn't a huge expense. I highly recommend the μ-SKY!

My first Nagoya trip was a comedy of errors: confusion at the ticket machine, buying the wrong ticket, a stressful refund process, boarding the wrong train, missing a train... it was a lot to handle!
Even with English options at the machines, the language barrier with staff meant asking for help was nearly impossible if you didn't speak Japanese. It added to the stress of travel!
To avoid getting lost when traveling from Nagoya Airport to Nagoya Station, remember these key tips:
1. Always pre-purchase your Meitetsu ticket online and use the QR code for entry.
2. If you want the μ-SKY, just add the 450 JPY surcharge at the station.
3. From the airport, head straight to Platform 3 for the Meitetsu trains, and look for the train that resembles a standard subway car!
Initially, I thought the 450 JPY μ-SKY surcharge was a bit much. But after experiencing both, the comfort and convenience of the μ-SKY are definitely worth that small investment. Your body will thank you!
The more affordably you can get your basic Meitetsu ticket, the less the additional surcharge feels. So, make sure to grab your basic Meitetsu ticket online at the best possible price before you go!
