Once you land at Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO), your very first mission is figuring out how to get downtown smoothly.
If it is your first time visiting Nagoya, figuring out where to buy train tickets and which platform to head to can feel a bit overwhelming. Nobody wants to waste precious vacation time getting lost at the airport terminal, right?
Don't worry! Today, we are breaking down exactly how to ride the Meitetsu Line from Nagoya Airport to the bustling downtown hub of Sakae Station step-by-step.

First, let's look at the ticket prices and different train options available on the Meitetsu Line from the airport to downtown Nagoya.
Ticket Type | Kanayama Station (Travel Time) | Nagoya Station (Travel Time) |
Limited Express (Non-reserved) | $6.00 (910 JPY) (32 mins) | $6.50 (980 JPY) (38 mins) |
Limited Express (Reserved) | $9.00 (1,360 JPY) (32 mins) | $9.50 (1,430 JPY) (38 mins) |
µ-SKY Rapid Limited Express | $9.00 (1,360 JPY) (24 mins) | $9.50 (1,430 JPY) (29 mins) |
📌 Train Options: There are two main train types you need to know: the Meitetsu Limited Express and the premium high-speed µ-SKY (Mu-Sky).
Trains run frequently—usually every 10 to 20 minutes—so you won't have to wait long on the platform regardless of when you arrive.
Most travelers head straight to the major transit hubs of Kanayama Station or Nagoya Station first.

The standard fare for the Limited Express (non-reserved seats) is:
📍 $6.00 (910 JPY) to Kanayama Station, and $6.50 (980 JPY) to Nagoya Station.
If you prefer a guaranteed seat on the Limited Express, or if you choose to ride the ultra-fast µ-SKY train, you will need to pay an additional first-class car ticket fee of $3.00 (450 JPY).

Note: The reserved cars on the standard Limited Express travel at the exact same speed as the non-reserved cars. You are simply paying for seat comfort and peace of mind, not a faster journey!

You can easily book your Meitetsu Line tickets online in advance. Booking ahead is highly recommended because it is often cheaper than buying them at the station counter, plus you can skip the long lines at the ticket machines!

To get from the airport to Sakae Station, here is the simple game plan:
Take the Meitetsu Line to Kanayama Station, then transfer to the Meijo Subway Line directly to Sakae Station.
Let's break down this transition step-by-step.

First, pick up your physical ticket at the airport ticket office, or if you booked online, simply scan your QR code at the ticket gate to enter.
Remember: physical paper tickets go directly into the slot on the ticket gates, while digital QR codes must be scanned on the dedicated reader panels.

If you are traveling with a standard Limited Express non-reserved ticket, board any of the non-reserved cars and grab any open seat. If you have a reserved ticket or are riding the µ-SKY, locate your specific car and seat number shown on your ticket.
Relax for about 30 minutes until you reach Kanayama Station, where we will make our transfer to the city subway.

Here is a crucial tip for when you exit the gates at Kanayama Station:
The first ticket gates you will see are for the JR Line.
To get to Sakae, you need the municipal subway (Meijo Line), not the JR Line.
❗️ Make sure to follow the purple "Subway" signs and head down one level.

The subway fare from Kanayama Station to Sakae Station is $1.40 (210 JPY). Purchase a ticket for this amount at the ticket machine, check your platform direction, and pass through the subway gates.
Keep in mind that the Meijo Line is a loop line (similar to London's Circle Line). Double-check the platform signs so you don't accidentally board a train going the long way around!
From Kanayama, it is just a quick 4-stop, 8-minute ride directly to Sakae Station!

And that is it! You have successfully navigated your way from Nagoya Airport straight to the heart of Sakae.
Let's do a quick recap of the route:
To reach Sakae, take either the Meitetsu Limited Express or µ-SKY train from Chubu Airport to Kanayama Station.
At Kanayama, exit the gates and transfer to the Meijo Subway Line heading to Sakae Station.
Depending on the train class you choose, the total cost will range between $6.80 to $10.50 (1,020 JPY to 1,570 JPY).
The total travel time, including the transfer and walking, is roughly 40 to 50 minutes.
Keep this guide handy on your arrival day, and you will breeze through Nagoya transit like a seasoned local. Have an amazing trip to Nagoya!
