Muan Topmeori Beach Review 2026: Family Fun & Lucky Sun Halos
Escape to Muan Topmeori Beach, a tranquil hidden gem near Gwangju, perfect for families seeking coastal relaxation, tidal flat adventures, and the chance to witness a lucky sun halo.

Just a few weeks ago, earlier this summer, I took my children and my mother on a lovely outing to Muan Topmeori Beach, a charming coastal spot near Gwangju. It was the perfect escape for a meal and a refreshing breath of sea air.
This beach is actually a familiar sight for me; I often pass it on the way to Muan CC, just beyond Muan International Airport. Sometimes, I even stop for a quick coffee. It's truly a small, tranquil beach, ideal for a peaceful break.

When you think of Muan, what local delicacies come to mind? This region is famous for its nakji (octopus) and onions, among other things. Nakji is especially popular during seasonal transitions, believed to offer great health benefits. There's a well-known nakji restaurant right near Topmeori Beach, which I'll be sure to introduce in a future post!

Muan Topmeori Beach has a cozy, intimate feel. While the sandy stretch might be modest, its real charm comes alive during low tide, revealing extensive tidal flats perfect for exploring.

The water here is so remarkably clear that my younger child, within five minutes of wading in, managed to catch some tiny sea creatures! While they looked impressive in the photos, they were actually quite small, so we gently returned them to the ocean before heading home.
The Little Beach Shop at Topmeori

There's a small convenience store about halfway along the beach. After our meal, we wanted to sit for a while, so we bought a drink to avoid feeling awkward. To my surprise, I found McCol, a classic Korean barley soda, in the refrigerator – it brought back some great memories!

There's nothing quite like the simple joy of finding little treasures by the sea!
Kite Flying Fun

Near the entrance to Muan Topmeori Beach, there's a really spacious parking lot. On the day we visited, there was a lovely breeze, making it perfect for flying kites. So, we pulled into the parking lot and spent some time soaring kites with the kids.

These were kites we picked up at the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival. This was only their second flight after an initial outing in Andong – a beautiful butterfly kite and an impressive eagle kite.

The eagle kite truly looked like a real bird of prey soaring through the sky!
A Lucky Sun Halo

While flying our kites that day, we unexpectedly witnessed a beautiful sun halo. Scientifically, a sun halo is a circular rainbow-like phenomenon that appears around the sun, caused by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals in the atmosphere.

However, there's a popular superstition that seeing a sun halo brings good fortune, largely because the circle symbolizes eternity and it's not an everyday sight. I sincerely hope that all of you, my readers, also receive abundant good luck!
