That's exactly what my husband and I were seeking when we prepared for our Fukuoka trip last November.
The idea of ending each day with a relaxing soak in an open-air bath was particularly appealing, which led us to choose the Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Gion.
After our stay, I found that my experience had both surprisingly great aspects and some unexpected drawbacks, which were quite distinct.
When we visited, it was during the festive Christmas season, so the lobby was beautifully decorated and had a wonderfully bright atmosphere.
Many Japanese hotels these days lean towards self-check-in, which can sometimes feel a bit impersonal. However, here, a staff member personally assisted us with check-in, making the process much smoother and more pleasant.
We were even touched by their kind service when they thoughtfully took a lovely photo of my husband and me in front of the beautiful Christmas tree in the lobby.
Amenities were conveniently available in the lobby, allowing us to pick up whatever we needed. Plus, we received a coffee coupon for a complimentary warm cup of coffee, a nice touch!
My husband and I stayed in a standard room at the Mitsui Garden. The sophisticated interior design made our entire stay feel very pleasant.
Compared to many Japanese hotels, both the room and bathroom were relatively spacious. We had plenty of room to open our 28-inch suitcase, and the shower area was generous, making it very comfortable.
Most importantly, the bed mattress was incredibly comfortable, and the pajamas provided were exceptionally soft, ensuring we had a wonderful night's sleep throughout our stay.
The room even featured a small sofa and table, creating the perfect spot for my husband and me to enjoy late-night snacks and relax.
The public bath at Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Gion was what I was most looking forward to, but honestly, it had a few disappointing points.
While it was great to have both an indoor and outdoor rotenburo (open-air bath) on the top 13th floor, the overall size was much smaller than I anticipated. In particular, there were only a few shower stalls, meaning that during peak hours, you'd inevitably have to wait for a spot.
I personally experienced this during my visit to the public bath – I had to wait a bit for a shower booth to become available.
Another crucial point to note is that towels are not provided in the public bath area.
You need to bring towels directly from your room. I even witnessed an awkward situation where someone, unaware or having forgotten, had to ask others for a towel.
If your main reason for seeking a public bath hotel in Fukuoka is for a truly relaxed, leisurely experience, it's good to be aware of these aspects beforehand.
With Gion Station and Canal City Hakata right nearby, the Mitsui Garden truly excels in terms of location, transportation, and shopping.

However, considering the overall stay experience, I honestly felt that a price of ~$207 per night was a bit steep.
