Memento Saigon Review: Hidden Speakeasy in District 1

Imagine a spot that feels completely yours—a gorgeous interior, zero crowds, and a sparkling river view right outside the window. This is Memento Saigon, one of my absolute favorite hidden gems in Vietnam.

Over the last few years, the owner has experimented with different concepts, leading to some major changes. Thanks to those shifts, it's gathered quite a following lately.

A Whimsical Welcome

Every time I visit, I'm greeted by this adorable neighborhood cat. I don't think he officially belongs to the bar—likely a neighbor's pet—but he’s always there acting like the cutest security guard.

Here's the entrance. There is no visible door at first glance—just a bookshelf. It instantly gives off magical Harry Potter vibes, like finding a secret passage to Platform 9 3/4.

Step inside, and you're welcomed by a beautifully curated, cozy space. Unlike most dim, moody speakeasies, this spot is delightfully bright and warm, filled with charming details.

Flashback: My First Visit in 2023

I first stumbled upon this place back in 2023. Back then, it was a quiet sanctuary. On most nights, I'd be the only one there, or maybe sharing the space with just one other table.

It was the perfect spot to unwind. The quiet atmosphere paired with the glittering city lights reflecting on the river was pure magic.

I ordered a beautifully presented, sweet cocktail during that visit. I can't recall the exact name, but it tasted like liquid dessert.

2024: A Culinary Experiment

During one of my visits in 2024, I walked in to find a completely different vibe. It had transformed into a bustling pop-up restaurant. There was a guest chef greeting diners, a camera crew filming, and a lively, loud crowd.

The bartender was still there, and they explained that the owner was testing out new event concepts. Honestly? I wasn't a fan. The heavy smell of food in a cozy cocktail space and the noisy atmosphere ruined the quiet charm I loved. I left thinking I probably wouldn't return.

2025 & Beyond: Finding Its True Identity

Fast forward to 2025, and curiosity got the better of me. I decided to give it another shot. To my relief, it had returned to its cocktail bar roots! They had expanded the space by taking over the adjacent unit, knocking down a wall, and adding a lovely balcony area.

Word had clearly gotten out because the bar was buzzing with people. Fortunately, because of the larger layout, it didn't feel cramped or overwhelmingly noisy.

While it's still incredibly beautiful, a part of me misses the intimate, quiet secret-garden feel of my very first visit. As you travel more, your standards naturally rise, and the larger space has lost just a tiny bit of its original, cozy magic. But it remains a stellar spot.

Since they open early, they likely operate as a cozy cafe during the day. Closed on Mondays.
