Matsuyama, Japan: A 3-Day Itinerary & Budget

If you're tired of the hustle and bustle of Japan's major cities,

and have heard whispers of fantastic experiences waiting for you,

you're probably already thinking about planning a trip to Matsuyama.

Matsuyama is truly charming, home to the adorable character Mikyan,

the magnificent Matsuyama Castle, and the atmospheric Dogo Onsen,

making it a highly satisfying destination for both sightseeing and luxurious hotel stays.

Today, I'll be sharing everything about a city I personally adore,

Matsuyama's 3-day itinerary, travel course, and budget breakdown,

along with my top recommendations for where to stay!

Booking Your Flights to Matsuyama

First things first, let's talk about flight prices.

Based on a search for December, round-trip flights from Incheon to Matsuyama

yield results similar to what you see in the photo.

With two flights operating daily,

that means there are four possible time combinations for your journey.

My recommended departure time is 7:00 AM,

and for your return, both 9:40 AM or 3:40 PM are perfectly fine options.

However, I personally find that a 3-day trip always feels a little too short,

so I would strongly recommend opting for the 3:40 PM

return flight to maximize your time.

As for pricing, even with recent increases in fuel surcharges,

I personally still recommend aiming to book your tickets for around

~$219.

(Anything higher might not offer the best value compared to flights to larger cities.)

Where to Stay in Matsuyama?

For anyone planning a trip, one of the biggest decisions is often

deciding on the perfect accommodation location.

To keep it simple, here's my quick guide:

If you're dreaming of a hot spring resort getaway → Dogo Onsen,

If pure sightseeing is your main goal → Okaido.

Stick to these choices, and you absolutely won't regret it!

As you can see, Okaido is centrally located amongst the major stations and tourist attractions.

What's more, you'll find a wealth of amazing restaurants and fantastic shopping spots concentrated in the

Okaido Shopping Arcade,

making it a supremely convenient location for sightseeing, transportation, and, of course, shopping!

I've personally visited Matsuyama twice,

and both times I made sure to book my accommodation in this area.

The hotel I chose was the 'Candeo Hotel'.

From the moment you step into the building, the overall quality of the rooms and facilities is impressive,

and the large public bath was a wonderful bonus, perfect for a relaxing soak even if you're traveling with family.

What's more, the breakfast spread offered a wide variety of delicious options,

and was consistently delicious, making for a truly satisfying start to each day.

While hotel prices have seen a slight increase recently,

I still believe it's a fantastic choice, balancing both an unbeatable location and high quality.

Your 3-Day Matsuyama Adventure: Itinerary & Highlights

Next up, I'll introduce the itinerary and highlights for your 2-night, 3-day Matsuyama trip.

Just for your reference, I've designed this itinerary assuming a flight departing Incheon at 7 AM and a return flight from Matsuyama at 9:40 AM.

Day 1: Your Adventure Begins!

After you've arrived at the airport and enjoyed some lunch on your first day, I highly recommend heading straight to Matsuyama Castle. Its operating hours are a bit shorter, closing at 4:30 PM, so it's best to make it a priority on day one!

Matsuyama Castle is perched at the highest point in the city, so you'll need to take a lift or a ropeway to reach it. This journey itself is super fun, almost like an attraction on its own!

And not only is the castle truly magnificent, but it also doubles as a fantastic city observatory, so make sure you don't miss it!

After exploring Matsuyama Castle and getting checked into your accommodation, the next perfect stop on your itinerary is Dogo Onsen.

The shopping arcade at Dogo Onsen usually closes around 5-6 PM, so I suggest exploring the shops first, and then grabbing dinner at one of the fantastic restaurants within the arcade.

Personally, I'd love to recommend 'Izakaya Kinbei' for dinner; their sea bream pot rice (tai-meshi), hot pot udon, and other dishes are all so incredibly delicious, making it a perfect spot for your evening meal.

Once you've finished your dinner, it's time to soothe away the day's fatigue with a relaxing hot spring bath at Dogo Onsen. Make sure to grab a change of clothes and a towel from your accommodation beforehand, so you can fully enjoy a refreshing onsen experience!

Once your onsen bath is complete, the sun will likely be setting. This is the perfect moment to catch the breathtaking night view of the hot springs from the parking lot located behind Dogo Onsen.

After soaking in the night views, you can head back to your hotel to enjoy a late-night snack or simply unwind and relax.

Day 2: Explore Beyond the City!

Day two is all about venturing out to explore the charming nearby destinations.

The most popular nearby destinations around Matsuyama are the enchanting towns of Uchiko, Ozu, and Shimonada.

You have the flexibility to visit all three locations on a self-guided adventure, or you can easily join a tour for a more structured experience.

Since I was traveling with my parents, and considering energy levels, we only had the chance to visit Uchiko out of the three.

By the time you return from your trip to the outskirts,

it will likely be late afternoon or evening.

After dinner, a souvenir shopping spree at Don Quijote in Okaido

will fit perfectly into your schedule.

Especially since Don Quijote is open until 2 AM,

visiting at night is a great way to maximize your schedule's efficiency!

Once you're done with your shopping, your itinerary is practically complete,

so why not celebrate your last night at an izakaya

in Okaido?

Day 3 Itinerary and Course

On your last day, the only plan is to head back to the airport

from the city center in the morning.

Since there aren't many early-opening restaurants at the airport,

I recommend waking up early and grabbing a meal at a 24-hour restaurant

in the city, like Matsuya, before heading out.

What's the Approximate Cost for a Matsuyama Trip?

So far, I've shared everything from Matsuyama flight prices and

accommodation locations to a 2-night, 3-day itinerary.

Curious about how much it all cost?

For two people, flights were about ~$380,

accommodation for 2 nights was about ~$255,

and including shopping, food, and transportation, it was ~$219.

In total, it came out to roughly ~$876.

Since airport transfers and tourist attraction entry fees were often free,

there were many opportunities to save money, and because I generally booked things affordably,

the total cost wasn't as high as I expected.
