If you're looking for a charming small city adventure in Japan,
one place that's been talked about a lot lately
is a trip to Matsuyama, Japan.

Having experienced it firsthand, I can tell you it's less about the bustling big city vibe
and more about a captivatingly peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

When planning a trip to Matsuyama, Japan, specifically,
it's common to base your itinerary around Matsuyama Castle, Dogo Onsen, and Okaido Shopping Street.
Among these, the place that stood out most in my memory
was definitely Matsuyama Castle.
It's fun to ride the lift up,
and the view from the castle keep (tenshukaku) was absolutely stunning.
What's more, for Korean tourists,
there are fantastic benefits like a free shuttle bus and coupon offers,
making it a perfect introductory course for a Matsuyama trip.
In this post,
I've put together a detailed guide to Matsuyama Castle,
the most popular spot on any Matsuyama trip, covering how to get there, my lift experience,
tips for entering the castle keep, and even the best accommodation spots around Okaido.

Matsuyama Castle: A Must-Visit on Your Matsuyama Trip to Japan
Matsuyama Castle is a quintessential attraction for any trip to Matsuyama, Japan.
Perched atop a hill with panoramic views of Matsuyama city,
it offers truly spectacular scenery.

What makes it even more special is that the city below has very few high-rise buildings,
creating an incredibly peaceful and tranquil landscape.
You can even spot the sea in the distance,
which perfectly captures the unique charm of a Japanese small city.
Matsuyama Castle Operating Hours
09:00 AM ~ 04:30 PM
(Subject to change seasonally)
The average visit takes about 1 to 2 hours.
On a Matsuyama trip itinerary,
people usually visit in the morning or around sunset.
(We visited during the day because the sky was so clear!)

Your Travel Route After Arriving at Matsuyama Airport on Your Trip to Japan
For this Matsuyama trip to Japan,
upon arrival at Matsuyama Airport,
my first priority was grabbing a coupon book.
Matsuyama Airport offers
a free coupon book specifically for Korean tourists,
and the benefits are surprisingly excellent!
(Matsuyama truly loves its Korean visitors!)
It includes coupons you can use right away for your Matsuyama trip, such as a Matsuyama Castle lift ticket, free admission to the castle keep,
and even an admission ticket to Dogo Onsen.

Especially if you're Korean,
you can get free entry to the castle keep with the coupon,
so I highly recommend picking one up!
After getting the coupon, we took the free shuttle bus
towards the Okaido Shopping Street.

Then, after dropping our luggage
at the Dormy Inn Matsuyama Natural Hot Spring, which we had booked,
we headed straight to Matsuyama Castle.
(It was just a 10-minute walk!)

Being in the heart of Okaido,
it was incredibly convenient for planning our Matsuyama itinerary.

Okaido Accommodation: Highly Recommended for Your Matsuyama Trip to Japan
Having experienced it myself,
I found that staying in accommodation around Okaido
was the most convenient option for a trip to Matsuyama, Japan.

Typically, a Matsuyama itinerary revolves around Matsuyama Castle,
Dogo Onsen, to Okaido Shopping Street
While many often travel this route,
if you stay in Okaido, your travel route becomes incredibly convenient.
Especially Dormy Inn Matsuyama
Natural Hot Spring's location is absolutely fantastic.

Since it's right next to Okaido Shopping Street,
finding great restaurants, shopping, and even getting around by train were all super convenient,
and **Matsuyama Castle is just about a 10-minute walk away**, so you can stroll there at a leisurely pace.
The airport shuttle bus stop is also right outside,
making arrivals and departures on your first and last days incredibly smooth.

Matsuyama Castle Lift: Location & How to Ride
The boarding point for the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway and Lift is
on the 3rd floor of Matsuyama Ropeway Shopping Street
(Matsuyama Information Center).
The lift and ropeway operate along the same route,
so you can choose whichever option you prefer for your ride.
We opted for the lift, and
it turned out to be much more thrilling than we anticipated!
First, you'll need to exchange your coupon for an actual boarding ticket
on the 1st floor. After that, take the escalator up to the
3rd floor boarding area.

From there, head to the lift or ropeway
boarding area, and you can hop right on!
The lift takes approximately 3 minutes one-way,
while the ropeway operates at roughly 10-minute intervals.
The ropeway is a cable car type
where multiple people ride together,
so it's relatively less affected by weather conditions,
The lift, on the other hand, is a single-person chair-style ride,
allowing for quick boarding with minimal waiting.
However, operations may be suspended during rain or strong winds.
We chose the lift, and
it was much more thrilling than we'd imagined!

Matsuyama Castle Lift: Our Review
Once you make your way towards the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway/Lift,
you'll get to choose between the lift and the ropeway.
We scored a free boarding pass with a coupon and decided to take the lift.
But seriously, it's quite thrilling, more than you'd expect!
It almost feels like there are no safety restraints,
so I was a bit scared and nervous when I first got on.
Every time the lift swayed,
it was secretly a bit scary,
but that's what made it so much fun!

As we ascended, feeling the gentle spring breeze,
we truly soaked in that unique, relaxed vibe of a Matsuyama, Japan trip.
The ride itself takes about 7 minutes,
and after you disembark, you'll need to walk up towards the Tenshukaku (main castle keep)
for about another 10 minutes.

Matsuyama Castle Tenshukaku: Our Thoughts
The stairs inside the Tenshukaku are quite steep.
They have that distinctive feel of narrow, high steps found in many Japanese castles,
so I highly recommend being careful when ascending.
The gradient, in particular, is steeper than you might anticipate,
so it's best to take your time.
But trust me, the view from the top is absolutely spectacular!

You can gaze out over the entire city of Matsuyama,
and even spot the distant sea, making for an incredibly refreshing panoramic view.
It was definitely a spot I'd recommend for taking photos
during your Matsuyama, Japan trip.

The climb up was quite a workout, so
after a full loop and on our way back down,
it was the perfect course to grab an ice cream.
We grabbed an ice cream cone on our way down,
and let me tell you, it truly heightened the travel vibe!
