Matsuyama 2-Day Itinerary 2026: Flights & Hotels Guide

Though the weather can be quite warm, many travelers are planning trips to Japan's charming smaller cities for their late summer and early fall vacations in 2026. After a quick search, it's clear that airfare prices have come down significantly compared to earlier this year. Plus, there's a growing demand for quieter, more authentic destinations like Matsuyama, stepping away from the bustling crowds of Fukuoka, Osaka, or Tokyo.

Matsuyama is incredibly accessible, just about a 90-minute flight from Incheon Airport. Home to the 3,000-year-old Dogo Onsen and the majestic Matsuyama Castle, it's a destination packed with rich history and culture, perfect for a short but fulfilling 2-day, 3-night escape.

I'll share my detailed itinerary, recommended accommodations, and tips on finding the best flight deals for your trip.

Matsuyama Itinerary: Day 1

Upon arrival at Matsuyama Airport, your first stop should be the Information Center. Present your passport to receive a coupon book offering free admission and discounts to major attractions. Each traveler receives one book, which typically includes free entry to Dogo Onsen Annex, Matsuyama Castle, and a complimentary cable car ride.

Getting from the airport to your city center accommodation can often be a hassle, but Matsuyama makes it easy! As part of an initiative to promote the city, they offer free shuttle bus services from the airport every year. Once you've dropped off your luggage at your hotel, you can spend your first evening exploring the Okaido area, grabbing a delicious meal, or enjoying a refreshing beer at a local izakaya.

Matsuyama is surprisingly compact. With Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Onsen being the two main sights, you'll feel like you've seen the highlights. You could easily visit Matsuyama Castle on your first day if you prefer. For accommodations, I booked one night in the central Okaido area and another near Matsuyama Station. The Matsuyama Tokyu REI Hotel, where I stayed the first night, was excellent in terms of both price and location. I honestly couldn't find any downsides, making it my top recommendation for your stay.

Matsuyama Itinerary: Day 2

To reach Dogo Onsen, you'll take a charming tram instead of the subway. It was my first time riding a street-level tram in Japan, and it's quite an experience! Just be sure to confirm the direction and hop on either tram line 3 or 5, which will take you directly there.

Dogo Onsen Station is the terminus for lines 3 and 5, and the ride from the city center takes about 20 minutes.

As you approach the entrance to the hot springs, you'll spot a quirky tangerine juice shop on the left. I was curious why it was packed with customers, so I went inside. It's a unique system where you dispense tangerine juice directly from a tap! While it's a bit on the pricier side, they offer several varieties, so it's a fun experience to try one.

While you can use the free admission coupon from the airport for Dogo Onsen Annex (remember your passport!), I personally recommend paying the entrance fee to experience the Main Building. I used the coupon for the Annex and was quite disappointed; it felt smaller than a local community bathhouse back home and lacked an open-air bath. I was in and out after a quick 30-minute shower, and even though it was free, I left feeling it wasn't the full Dogo Onsen experience.

For my second night, I stayed at 'Hotel MyStays Matsuyama' near Matsuyama Station. While I would have loved to extend my stay at the first hotel, they didn't have a triple room available for consecutive nights. Although it was a little further from the city center, this hotel offered great value and comfortable room conditions, which I really appreciated.

Departure Day

If you were planning a longer trip, say 3-4 or 4-5 days, you could easily venture out to nearby towns like Uchiko, Ozu, or even Shimonada Station. However, with a 2-day, 3-night itinerary, your travel scope is a bit limited. After enjoying breakfast, you'll simply take the convenient airport shuttle back for your departure.

Matsuyama Airport itself doesn't offer many attractions, so you can wrap up your trip with some light souvenir shopping for snacks or duty-free items.

And there you have it – my recommended 2-day Matsuyama itinerary! Essentially, your main sightseeing will revolve around Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle. The rest of your time can be spent leisurely, perhaps browsing for treasures at Don Quijote or embarking on a culinary adventure through local eateries.
