It's well-known among locals for selling out before lunchtime, so we anticipated a crowd. Surprisingly, on a weekday morning, it wasn't overly busy when we arrived. However, as we finished up, a line had indeed begun to form!

You'll easily spot Lin He Fa at Stall 1430 inside Yongle Market. Its prime position on Dihua Street makes it a perfect stop during your market exploration, and it's just an 8-minute walk from the picturesque Dadaocheng Wharf.

The Atmosphere & Waiting Experience

Stepping into Yongle Market offers a delightful glimpse into Taipei's past. It's a bustling, traditional market brimming with old-world charm, though not sprawling in size, making it easy to navigate.

We had hoped to arrive right at opening, but after an early morning arrival in Taipei and a bit of jet lag, we finally made it to the shop around 8:50 AM. Fortunately, we encountered no waiting line!

Instead of a queue, we saw impressive stacks of freshly prepared lunchboxes! The staff were diligently assembling more, indicating a steady demand. It seems many locals grab their Lin He Fa oily rice for breakfast before work, so having portions ready for the morning rush is a smart strategy.

While there's no seating directly at the stall, don't fret! If you venture further into the market, you'll discover a communal dining area. Just ask one of the friendly staff, and they'll happily point you in the right direction. It was wonderful to see so many locals enjoying their meals, offering us a genuine glimpse into daily life in Taipei!

Menu & What We Ordered

At Lin He Fa Oily Rice Shop in Yongle Market, the menu is simple and focused: youfan (oily rice), succulent chicken drumsticks, perfectly braised eggs, and sweet potato cake. They offer both individual items and set menus.

It's worth noting that we observed the individual items sometimes being priced similarly, or even slightly less, than the sets. We recommend a quick mental calculation to ensure you're getting the best deal!

Our Youfan Experience

Our order arrived neatly packed in a convenient bento-style box. The staff were thoughtful enough to include chopsticks for each person and placed everything in a plastic bag, making it easy to carry to the communal dining area.

The soy-sauce-based oily rice was generously topped with a substantial chicken drumstick and a perfectly braised egg. We could also see savory mushrooms and tender bits of pork mixed into the fragrant rice.

My first bite confirmed it: distinctly savory and quite satisfying! It was definitely a good, comforting meal. However, I wouldn't say it's something I'd endure a long wait for, or drastically rearrange my travel plans to experience. It's solid, authentic Taiwanese comfort food.

We were glad we decided to order just one portion to share between the two of us. It was the perfect amount to satisfy our curiosity and get a genuine taste of this local specialty without feeling overly full.

Final Thoughts

Lin He Fa Oily Rice Shop is an excellent choice for a quick, authentic, and budget-friendly meal in Taipei. It pairs perfectly with an exploration of Yongle Market and Dihua Street, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture.

However, a small heads-up: if you're not a fan of savory or slightly salty dishes, this might not be your top pick. While it's not *overly* salty, it is definitely well-seasoned. We recommend sharing one portion between two people; if you absolutely love it, you can always grab more, or move on to try other delicious treats nearby!
