Craving the best egg tarts in Shanghai? Lilian Bakery is a local legend! Discover why their original and caramel egg tarts are a must-try at the stunning New World Department Store branch in 2026.
My Shanghai trip this time around was pretty spontaneous. I decided to just go with the flow, visiting popular restaurants, cafes, and sights as the opportunity arose each day.
While planning, I kept hearing that Lilian Bakery was a must-visit in Shanghai. As a huge fan of egg tarts, and with a branch conveniently located near my accommodation, I decided to pop in for a quick visit.

Getting to Lilian Bakery
Lilian Bakery boasts several branches across Shanghai. While I've seen some inside subway stations, making a special trip just for those isn't always the most efficient. I personally prefer the New World Department Store branch, as it allows for browsing other shops too.
You'll find Lilian Bakery on the B1 level. The department store itself is quite grand, both inside and out. It's easy to spot the bakery after a short 5-minute walk around the basement floor.
I'd heard that weekends and lunchtimes could get quite crowded, with egg tarts often selling out by late afternoon due to their popularity. So, I made sure to visit early, around 10 AM. There wasn't a single customer when I arrived, but right after I placed my order, a large group of Korean tourists poured in!
Egg Tart Varieties
First up, the cheese tart. This one wasn't really for me! While the classic egg tarts feature a crispy, flaky pastry crust, the cheese tart had more of a biscuit-like texture with a thick edge, which just wasn't my preference.
Original is always a winner, but my absolute favorite is the caramel croissant tart. The added sweetness makes it incredibly moreish – they just disappear!
The prices are super reasonable too: the original is around ~$1, and the caramel is also around ~$1. You can't buy them individually; there's a minimum purchase of 4 tarts, and they're sold in packs of 4 or 6.
Other Baked Goods
Of course, I had to check out their other baked goods! Though, to be honest, I rarely saw anyone buying anything other than egg tarts. They have various desserts, including small slices of cake for about ~$4, which isn't the most budget-friendly option.
Beyond individual pastries, they offered more roll cakes and loaves of bread.
With so many other delicious foods to try in Shanghai, I'd suggest sticking to just the egg tarts here.
My curiosity got the better of me, so I opened the box right after paying.
The color was absolutely beautiful! I've had famous egg tarts in Macau and at popular cafes back home, so I was really looking forward to seeing how Lilian Bakery's would compare. The classic egg tart had a wonderfully smooth texture and excellent flavor.
There's a perfect cafe for enjoying your egg tarts just upstairs! Head back up to the first floor, and you'll find Heytea. Ordering a grape juice there to go with your tarts creates an unbeatable combination. I'm not entirely sure if bringing in outside food is officially allowed, but most people seemed to be enjoying their egg tarts, just like me!
The caramel egg tart truly blew me away. They might have durian egg tarts or other new flavors, but honestly, you just need to stick to the original and caramel combination. Trust me on this one!
That wraps up my visit to Lilian Bakery at the New World Department Store. Some people say they pack them up to take home and reheat in an air fryer, but I personally don't recommend it. Unless you can immediately freeze them, the taste will inevitably diminish. Nothing beats eating them fresh on the spot!
