What is Lijiang's Weather Like?
Lijiang 丽江

Located in the northwestern part of China's Yunnan Province,
Lijiang is a high-altitude city sitting at about 2,400 meters (approx. 7,874 feet) above sea level.
While the temperature doesn't vary drastically throughout the year,
it has a subtropical highland climate, which means massive temperature swings between day and night.
The air is clean and crisp, and because you are closer to the sky,
the UV rays can be extremely intense!

Seasonal Features & Packing Tips

Because Lijiang sits high up in the mountains,
the weather can be highly unpredictable,
and the four seasons feel quite different from what you might be used to.
A Year-Round Travel Destination |

Lijiang doesn't have stark boundaries between seasons.
With an average annual temperature of around 13–20°C (55–68°F),
it boasts a wonderfully mild climate year-round.
The air is clean, and the overall atmosphere is so pleasant
that it's widely considered a perfect destination to visit at any time of the year.

Spring and autumn offer warm days
paired with cool, refreshing mornings and evenings—perfect for exploring.
Even in the summer, the temperatures remain surprisingly moderate,
allowing you to enjoy a wonderfully cool escape.

Winter is relatively mild compared to other high-altitude areas,
letting you fully experience the unique, majestic charm of the highlands.

In particular, summer in Lijiang is peak vacation season,
so it gets quite busy. While it is the rainy season,
the average summer rainfall is only around 200 to 300mm,
which is much lower than Korea's summer average
(around 700mm).
It mostly comes down as sudden, tropical-style showers,
but you should still keep an eye on the weather and be prepared.
Weather forecast? It doesn't mean much in Lijiang. |
Lijiang is famous for having incredibly unpredictable weather.
Even the locals say, "We don't even know what the weather will be like in a few hours,"
as the actual weather often turns out completely different
from the daily forecast.

It's incredibly common for a sudden shower to pour down from clear skies,
or for storm clouds to roll in out of nowhere.
Be sure to pack an umbrella or a lightweight, waterproof jacket!
For instance, last August, there was rain in the forecast every day,
but we ended up enjoying gorgeous, sunny weather
for several days straight.
High-altitude weather: Beware of the huge temperature swings! |
Having traveled to Lijiang twice—once in August (summer) and once in October (autumn)—
the thing that struck me the most was the massive temperature difference between day and night.

During the day, it gets warm enough for short sleeves,
but once morning or evening rolls around, the temperature drops so drastically
that even a long-sleeve shirt feels too thin.
Because of the high altitude, the moment the sun goes down,
the air turns chilly instantly.

This is why packing clothes you can easily layer
is an absolute must for Lijiang!
A local poncho (you can buy these in Lijiang)
A light down jacket or a windbreaker
Hoodies or knit cardigans
Lightweight long-sleeve shirts
I highly recommend packing items like these.
I actually packed a little bit of everything
across all four seasons.
Keep in mind that this is a city where the temperature
can swing wildly in a single day!
UV Index: "Very High" Warning! |

Since Lijiang is located at a high altitude, the UV rays are extremely strong.
On sunny days, you can actually feel your skin stinging almost instantly.
So, no matter which season you visit, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
are absolute must-haves.
📖 Lijiang Travel Guide! Pack with large temperature swings in mind. | |
Season | What to Wear |
Spring / Autumn | Long-sleeve t-shirts, light sweaters, jeans, outerwear, comfortable sneakers |
Summer | Short-sleeve t-shirts, breathable pants, outerwear, jackets, sandals or sneakers Umbrella or raincoat for sudden showers |
Winter | Thick winter coats, thermal undergarments, pants, comfortable sneakers, gloves, a beanie, and a scarf * Even in winter, bring some light layers (like thin long-sleeves) so you can adjust your outfit as the weather shifts. |
Other Essentials | Altitude sickness medication, and carrying a portable oxygen canister |
So, when is the absolute BEST time to visit Lijiang?
The Best Season to Visit Lijiang

Season | Average Temp | Key Features |
Spring (Mar–May) | 6~20℃ | Flowers in full bloom, beautiful weather, ideal for travel, and relatively fewer tourists. |
Summer (Jun–Aug) | 10~28℃ | Great for summer vacations, though it is also the rainy season. If you don't mind the occasional rain, it's a great time to visit! Warm days with strong UV rays, but cool in the shade and breezy in the evening. A popular summer escape, so expect crowds. |
Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 5~20℃ | Clear blue skies and perfect weather! This is Lijiang's prime season. It's cool, with a big temperature drop, so bring warm clothes. |
Winter (Dec–Feb) | 0~17℃ | Warm during the day, cold at night; a beautiful season with clear skies. Perfect for taking in the stunning snow-covered peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. |
The absolute best times to visit Lijiang are
March to May and September to November (Spring and Autumn).
Thanks to the clear, pleasant weather,
it's absolutely perfect for walking, taking photos, and soaking in nature.
With fewer tourists than the peak summer season,
you can enjoy a much more relaxed vibe.
If you can't make it during these peak seasons,
summer and winter are also great alternatives!
Lijiang's summers aren't overwhelmingly hot,
and winters rarely see extreme cold snaps,
making travel highly doable year-round.
Just keep in mind that summer brings larger crowds and occasional rain,
while winter gets quite chilly during the mornings and evenings.

In conclusion, while Lijiang is a year-round destination,
spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather.
But as long as you're prepared for the rainy season or temperature drops,
you'll have an amazing time whenever you go!
