Lijiang's Hidden Gem, Why I Visited Twice
First Visit - Samgyeopsal without Gochujang or Ssamjang

After finishing our Tiger Leaping Gorge trek, it was late in the evening.
Upon returning to Lijiang,
we decided to check out a restaurant recommended by our guesthouse owner in Shuhe Ancient Town.

The first thing that caught my eye on the menu was...
...they had samgyeopsal here?!

So, we ordered the signature Stone Pot Mushroom Stew,
along with samgyeopsal, potatoes, and tofu,
perfect for grilling on a hot stone plate.
It was incredibly delicious!

But there was just one small regret:
there wasn't a dipping sauce perfectly suited for Korean tastes...
For Koreans, ssamjang or gochujang is a must-have
when eating samgyeopsal, isn't it?
The moment the meat hit my mouth,
I thought, "This absolutely needs gochujang!!"
The longing was real.
Then, a year later,
I found myself traveling to Lijiang again.
This time, I made sure to pack ssamjang and gochujang!
Samgyeopsal: Perfectly Suited for Korean Palates!
Second Visit - Full Setup with Ssamjang and Gochujang!

On my first visit,
I was so incredibly happy to see samgyeopsal on the menu!
But not having ssamjang and gochujang with me was a lingering regret.

So! For my second Lijiang adventure,
I made sure to pack ssamjang + gochujang
and revisited the spot!

The result?
As expected, for Korean palates, the power of seasoning is everything!
Sizzling grilled meat,
topped with minced garlic, green onions, and a touch of gochujang and ssamjang...
When I popped that bite into my mouth, it was pure bliss!

While samgyeopsal in Korea is undeniably fantastic,
that unexpected encounter with it in far-off Lijiang, China,
is something I honestly don't think I'll ever forget!
Just one little sauce elevated my travel satisfaction
by leaps and bounds in that moment!
💡TIP
Always pack some Korean sauces with you.
They're your secret weapon for creating those small, certain joys (sohwakhaeng) during your travels!
An Unmissable Dish: Stone Pot Wild Mushroom Soup
Yunyao Stone Pot Restaurant (Shuhe Branch)

But wait, there's another essential dish you absolutely HAVE to try alongside it!
It's the incredible wild mushroom soup, slow-cooked in a traditional stone pot.
Its perfect temperature stays warm right down to the last spoonful,
offering a harmonious blend of flavors without any overpowering local spices.

The milky broth is deeply infused with a rich mushroom aroma, and just one spoonful,
taken as a delightful palate cleanser,
warms you from the inside out – you'll even feel a sense of purification!
The profound flavor of the wild mushrooms was truly unforgettable.

While there are versions of this stone pot mushroom soup with meat,
I personally prefer the clean, pure mushroom soup without any meat,
as I'm not a fan of the distinct meat aroma sometimes found in Chinese dishes.

Just so you know,
Lijiang, nestled in China's Yunnan Province,
is incredibly renowned for its wild mushrooms.
This region is a treasure trove of diverse wild mushroom species,
making them a beloved ingredient for both locals and adventurous travelers.

So, beyond the restaurant I'm highlighting here,
Lijiang boasts countless eateries specializing in mushroom cuisine, where you can savor wild mushrooms in a huge variety of dishes – from hot pot and stir-fries to grilled delights and even mushroom-infused liquors!
And there are many restaurants specializing in mushroom cuisine.
Especially, mushroom hot pot is widely regarded as an absolute must-try for anyone exploring Lijiang.
With their deep aroma and surprisingly delicate taste,
these wild mushrooms are sure to delight even the most discerning gourmet traveler!

Restaurant Information, Location, Menu, Interior Atmosphere

Shuhe Ancient Town
Tucked away in an inner alley,
this spot's exterior was adorned with Naxi Dongba script
and fluttering Tibetan prayer flags (tarco).
If you're visiting Shuhe Ancient Town or staying nearby,
it's definitely worth a visit.

Inside, it had a traditional, clean feel,
decorated with wooden tables and folk ornaments.
There were plenty of tables, making it perfect
for families or couples dining together.

Lijiang's weather is cool and not too hot,
so the warmth from the stone pot balanced perfectly with the indoor temperature.
It's an ideal destination to beat the heat,
making a summer visit completely hassle-free.
