What is the Ancient Tea Horse Road?

茶马古道, Chama Gǔdào, cha ma gu dao, Meaning of the Ancient Tea Horse Road

The Ancient Tea Horse Road (茶马古道, cha ma gu dao) was

an ancient trade route that, in the past, stretched from Yunnan Province (云南省) Lijiang / Sichuan Province (四川省) in China,

through Tibet, India, Nepal, and other regions,

reaching South, West, Central, and Southeast Asia.

Named for the tea (茶) and horses (馬) that traversed it,

it was far more than just a trade route; it was a historically significant path where diverse ethnic groups and cultures

intersected.

Today, certain sections of this road have been developed into tourist attractions,

making them popular for trekking or cultural exploration.

The part of the Ancient Tea Horse Road I trekked,

the path from Tea Horse Guesthouse to Halfway Guesthouse,

is also a very popular half-day trekking course.

Tiger Leaping Gorge Upper Trail Course

The trek I took from Tea Horse Guesthouse to Halfway Guesthouse is

part of the Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡), one of Asia's most famous treks,

located between Lijiang and Shangri-La in Yunnan Province.

Specifically, it's a section of the Upper Trail course.

The trekking course from Tea Horse Guesthouse to Halfway Guesthouse

covers a distance of approximately 5 km.

This course has a moderate difficulty level.

It features alternating ascents, descents, and flat sections,

and while the significant changes in altitude require a certain level of physical fitness,

it's still manageable for beginners.

The trek took approximately 2 to 3 hours,

and with red arrow markers along the entire path,

there was no need to worry about getting lost.

5 Essential Items for Your Tiger Leaping Gorge Trek on the Tea Horse Road

Before you embark on the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek,

there are some essential things you absolutely need to prepare.

Physical Preparation

Light stretching and warm-up exercises are a must before you start!

Since it's a high-altitude area,

you might feel more fatigued than usual.

Footwear: Trekking Shoes or Sneakers

Comfortable shoes are essential,

and I recommend trekking shoes or sneakers.

I wore sneakers, and since the route from Cha Ma Ke Zhan to Zhong Tu Ke Zhan

isn't particularly difficult, I was able to complete it

comfortably with just sneakers.

Water & Snacks

Pack water, fruits, chocolates, and other snacks

for sufficient hydration and energy replenishment.

Hat · Sunglasses · Sunscreen

When there are no clouds, the sun is strong, so UV protection is a must!

Oxygen Canister · Raincoat · Extra Clothes (Optional)

Since it's a high-altitude area, oxygen can be scarce,

so it might be a good idea to bring an oxygen canister.

It's also a good idea to check the weather forecast

and prepare a raincoat.

I did the trek at the end of September,

and it rained briefly in the middle before clearing up quickly,

and I even got to see sunny weather and a rainbow!

The weather can change frequently, so it's a good idea

to pack some extra clothes.

but every single view I stopped to admire

will stay etched in my memory for a long, long time.

The route I trekked is definitely doable even for beginners,

as long as you have enough stamina.

However, given it’s a high-altitude region, I highly recommend

double-checking the weather and your packing essentials.
