Discover La Vara, a charming local restaurant in Bohol with a unique camping vibe. Indulge in their famous Butter Beer and delicious gambas for an authentic taste of the Philippines!
La Vara
Looking for an authentic taste of Bohol? La Vara is a fantastic local restaurant that captures the true spirit of the Philippines. It's the perfect spot to try unique dishes, enjoy a one-of-a-kind butter beer, and soak in a wonderfully rustic, camping-inspired atmosphere. While it might be a little off the beaten path, the vibrant local vibe truly comes alive after sunset.
Your Next Bohol Local Food Find
Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you're just wandering without a plan. That's exactly how I stumbled upon La Vara during my 2026 trip to Bohol. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to go in.

Honestly, the camping-inspired aesthetic was just too inviting to pass up. Even though I wasn't particularly hungry, the allure of the place pulled me right in.
Butter Beer in the Philippines? Yes, Please!

Scanning the menu, unsure of what to order since my appetite wasn't roaring, I spotted something truly intriguing: Butter Beer! I immediately knew that was my pick, along with an order of Gambas.
Now, typically, Butter Beer is a non-alcoholic treat, but to my surprise, this one seemed to have a kick! It wasn't overly strong, but there was definitely some alcohol in it, which made for a unique twist.

The Gambas, which I ordered simply as a side dish, turned out to be surprisingly delicious! It might have been the thrill of discovering such a cool, atmospheric spot, but I definitely marked La Vara down as a local Bohol gem.
A Bit Off the Beaten Path

To be fair, La Vara is situated almost at the western tip of Panglao Island. Here's the address:
📍 La Vara Restaurant
PH Bohol Panglao Doljo Purok1, Brgy 필리핀
While the ambiance alone makes it a winner, coming all this way just for a meal might be a stretch for some. It's ideal if you enjoy exploring by scooter, or if you're staying at nearby resorts like Modala Resort or North Zen Villas. I walked from North Zen, and during the day, the heat made it feel quite a distance. A tuk-tuk would be a much better option, even at night, as the area can be a bit dark for walking.

The restaurant itself is charmingly set up: the ordering counter and kitchen are in a camping van, and beyond the standard tables, there are cozy tent-style seating areas inside.
After my daytime visit, I couldn't shake the feeling that the place would be even more magical at night.
So, what did I do?
I went back that night! That's the beauty of unplanned travel – you can easily weave in spontaneous detours without disrupting a rigid schedule. The only downside? If nothing spontaneous happens, it can get pretty dull, especially when traveling solo.
The Ambiance Shines Brighter at Night

Just as I expected, La Vara was even more atmospheric after dark. The entrance, the indoor tables, and the tent areas all glowed with a wonderful, inviting warmth. It truly transformed into a captivating Bohol restaurant.

This time, I ordered the Butter Beer again and decided to try a cheesy pasta dish.
The beer arrived first, and then I noticed something different.

Where was my little spider decoration!? It's not a huge deal, but for a simple Butter Beer, that little detail was part of its charm. A minor omission, but still a bit disappointing!

The pasta was this cheesy delight. It was savory and good, though I'd say it's an acquired taste. The cheese had that strong, aged European flavor – a really pungent kick! Definitely a bold choice.
It really felt like a local's spot. Both times, during the day and at night, I only saw local Filipinos. No other foreigners or Koreans were around, which added to its authentic charm.
So, if you're looking for a truly local Bohol restaurant tucked away on the western side of the island, La Vara is a fantastic, atmospheric choice.
