and were all pleasantly surprised, right?

Up to a 60% discount on Japanese hotel stays?

My eyes lit up the moment I heard the news too!

Especially with the current weak yen, getting even half-price support for accommodation

means an incredible opportunity to save big on travel expenses, doesn't it?

But hold on a second! If you're tempted by those numbers

and are about to book right away,

you might want to pause!

It's not a straightforward 60% discount no matter where you go in Kyushu,

and if your booking timing is off,

you might not get a single dollar of benefits.

To help you make the most of this opportunity without missing out,

I'll neatly organize all the key details for you, from the support conditions and actual booking start dates

to important precautions!

1. Basic Information

The official name of this support policy is

‘Kyushu Fukkō Ōen Wari’ (九州ふっこう応援割).

This exceptional support measure was put in place by the Japanese government after the earthquake

that occurred in the Kumamoto area in late July 2026.

With a cascade of accommodation cancellations across Kyushu,

the government decided to revitalize tourism demand

by injecting a total of 15.1 billion yen from its reserve fund.

📢 **Eligibility:** Travel and accommodation packages for Kyushu regions, 1 night or more

📢 **Method:** First-come, first-served until government budget is depleted

2. Discount Rates & Maximum Limits

The point where most people get caught out

is the 'up to 60%' claim!

Fukuoka, which is most popular among travelers,

only qualifies for a 50% discount, not 60%.

Only Kumamoto and Kagoshima, which were hit hardest by the disaster,

receive the 60% discount.

📢 **Support Rates by Region**

**60% Discount:** Kumamoto Prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture

**50% Discount:** Fukuoka Prefecture,

Oita Prefecture (including Yufuin and Beppu),

Nagasaki Prefecture, Saga Prefecture, Miyazaki Prefecture

📢 **Maximum Support Amount per Person (Limit)**

**Accommodation-only / 1-night package including transportation:**

Up to 20,000 yen per person

**2-night or more package including transportation:**

Up to 30,000 yen per person

**Accommodation package touring 2 or more prefectures:**

Up to 35,000 yen per person

For example, if you book a ryokan in Kumamoto

for 30,000 yen per night,

you'd receive 18,000 yen (60%) in support,

making your out-of-pocket cost 12,000 yen.

However, it's crucial to remember that there's a maximum limit!

If the accommodation cost gets too high,

you'll hit the limit (20,000 yen) first,

so searching only for the most expensive places won't necessarily maximize your benefit.

3. Important Precautions

This is the part I want to emphasize the most about this policy.

Absolutely do NOT rush to book right now!

**1. Existing Bookings Are Not Retroactively Eligible**

According to the current guidelines, existing bookings made before October 1st

will not automatically receive the discount.

For Oita Prefecture, for example,

it has already been explicitly stated that existing bookings are excluded.

**2. October 1st is the 'Check-in Date,'**

**not the 'Booking Open Date'**

The fact that support begins on October 1st means

it applies to stays checking in from that date.

Actual booking open dates are announced separately by each local government.

Only Oita Prefecture is scheduled to open bookings in late September,

while Fukuoka and Kumamoto

have not yet announced their exact opening dates.

**3. Air Ticket Only Bookings Are Excluded from Discount**

International flight tickets booked separately from your home country

are not eligible for support.

Only pure accommodation or packages linked with local transportation qualify.

If you've already booked your October Fukuoka or

Yufuin accommodation,

don't cancel your existing reservation right away!

Just make a note of the free cancellation deadline and keep it.

Later, when the official booking systems for each prefecture

or exclusive coupons become available,

compare the prices and cancellation policies.

If you succeed with a new deal,

it's much safer to cancel your old booking then.

It would be a real shame if you cancelled your room first,

only to find all the rooms fully booked! 😟

4. Recommended Itinerary

Because of the 60% discount rate,

I don't recommend twisting your itinerary just to rush to Kumamoto.

Considering the Shinkansen travel costs and wasted time,

it could actually end up being a loss.

Plus, some areas in Kumamoto

still need monitoring for transportation recovery.

So, the truly cost-effective route I recommend is

the 'Fukuoka + Oita (Yufuin/Beppu)' combined course!

📢 Day 1:

Arrive at Fukuoka Airport

→ Hakata/Tenjin city gourmet & shopping (1 night in Fukuoka)

📢 Day 2:

Travel to Yufuin

→ Enjoy autumn leaves & relax at an Onsen Ryokan (1 night in Oita)

📢 Day 3:

Explore Beppu's Hell Onsens and return home

If you aim for a touring package that combines these two prefectures,

the maximum cap per person goes up to ~$219,

allowing you to maximize your benefits!

I've tried staying one night at a Yufuin ryokan

and also done a day tour covering both Yufuin and Beppu,

but personally, I recommend trying an overnight stay at a ryokan!

The only downside of ryokans is typically the accommodation cost,

but this is a golden opportunity to save 50% on that! :)

booking at lightning speed as soon as it opens is key.
