When planning a trip to Fukuoka, adding a hot spring getaway to the itinerary is a must for many travelers!
While Yufuin and Beppu are the most popular choices, if you're looking for a quieter, more tranquil rural hot spring village vibe,
Kurokawa Onsen is an absolutely brilliant alternative.
During our summer vacation last August,
our group of 6 adults, including my parents,
visited this charming spot for a family trip.
We were so satisfied with the experience that I decided to share my honest review, along with a few helpful tips you should know before booking! :)
Since this was a family trip with my parents,
our top priority was relaxation rather than
rushing around crowded tourist spots.

We searched for a destination easily accessible from Fukuoka
that wouldn't exhaust my parents, while still offering
a true nature-immersed hot spring experience.
That's how we landed on Kurokawa Onsen!
Yufuin is beautiful, but it's often packed with tourists, so we decided to pass on it this time.

What really drew us in was learning about the summer river illuminations and local events held right by the hot springs.
Walking around at night in our yukatas, lighting sparklers we brought along, felt like stepping straight into a Studio Ghibli film. It was magical!

Kurokawa Onsen village is home to
so many famous ryokans
that we agonized over our choice before booking.
Ultimately, I narrowed it down based on
four key criteria:
Category | Reason for Selection |
Open-Air Baths | Immersive nature setting |
Rooms | Clean and well-maintained facilities |
Dining | Kaiseki dinner was a must |
Price | Relatively reasonable rates |
Ichinoi stood out with its immaculate rooms and
the exact open-air bath ambiance we were looking for.
For my parents' room, there was a charming little garden view from the window
and a dedicated lounge area by the veranda
where they could sit back and relax.

The moment I saw the photos online, I thought,
"Ah, this is the one."
And sure enough, in person,
it ended up being my parents'
absolute favorite space.
Rooms sell out quickly during peak season, so check room types and prices as soon as your travel dates are set! I booked a bit late and felt like I paid a slight premium.. ㅠㅠ
Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Ichinoi, Minamioguni, Japan
Since we had a group of
6 adults (including my parents),
we booked 3 separate rooms.
Let me show you the 3 different rooms we stayed in
(We somehow ended up picking three different room types.. haha)
01
Japanese-Style Room - Twin Beds, Shared Bathroom

🛏 Room Details |
Room Name: Japanese-Style Room - Twin Beds, Shared Bathroom |
~193 sq ft (18㎡) |
They had two types of
Japanese-style rooms.
The vibe was similar,
but this one featured twin beds.
02
Japanese-Style Room - Shared Bathroom

🛏 Room Details |
Room Name: Japanese-Style Room - Shared Bathroom |
~193 sq ft (18㎡) |
A traditional Japanese tatami room
without modern beds!
Both rooms 1 and 2 offered gorgeous lush green views from the windows,
and
they were the exact same price.
03
Guest Room - Tatami Area

The room we booked for my parents:
Guest Room - Tatami Area
It had two beds, and
when you opened the sliding doors to the balcony area,
it felt like having a private, open garden.
It was lovely.
This one was slightly more expensive
than rooms 1 and 2 (about ~$20 more).
The room itself is noticeably more spacious.

Room Name: Guest Room - Tatami Area, Shared Bathroom |

Dining (Kaiseki / Breakfast)

Kurokawa Onsen village doesn't have a ton of standalone restaurants, and the ones that are there close quite early. That's why we booked a plan that included a traditional kaiseki dinner.
Dinner featured Kumamoto's famous regional specialty, Basashi (horse sashimi). The food was delicious, but as a family traveler, the biggest perk was not having to drag my parents out to find food. We enjoyed a comfortable, high-quality meal right in the ryokan, served by incredibly polite staff.

Breakfast was equally impressive—a beautifully presented, traditional Japanese morning meal. The skewered grilled fish always looks so cool to me! Haha.
When choosing accommodation, I almost always prioritize the view from the open-air bath (rotenburo). Since we were in a famous hot spring village, I really wanted to soak somewhere visually stunning.

The baths at Ichinoi Ryokan aren't massive, but the surroundings are incredibly peaceful. Being completely surrounded by the forest made for a deeply relaxing soak.
Hot springs in the summer? Many people think it'll be too hot, but stepping out of the bath into the cool evening or early morning air is surprisingly refreshing and feels amazing✨
The water here is a sulfur spring, and my skin felt unbelievably smooth afterward! Onsens are always a good idea. There's also a small indoor bath available!

Ichinoi is located about a 5-minute walk from the center of Kurokawa Onsen village. It's a very manageable distance, and the quiet surroundings are a huge plus. The only issue is that the access road to the ryokan is very narrow..!

We were driving a Toyota Alphard, which is a large minivan. Rather than risking scratching the rental car trying to squeeze through, we gave up quickly and parked at the parking lot in front of the Kurokawa Information Center nearby.
📍 Kurokawa Onsen Information Center
6594-1 Manganji, Minamioguni, Aso District, Kumamoto 869-2402, Japan

After parking, we called the ryokan, and a staff member immediately came to pick us up. They handled all our luggage and were incredibly accommodating, making us feel like VIPs right from the start. Taking my parents there made me feel pretty proud!
How was it? :: Final Thoughts on Our Stay |
😊 Pros
✅ Spotlessly clean facilities and incredibly kind staff.
They handled pickup and all our luggage.
✅ Stunning open-air sulfur baths.
✅ They don't take too many groups at once,
so it's generally very quiet and perfect for resting.

🤔 Things to Consider
✅ On the flip side, if you want your accommodation
to be smack in the middle of the village center,
the location might feel slightly off-path.
(Though walking it didn't feel far at all.)
✅ The lobby is on the 1st floor,
and rooms are located downstairs,
so the stairs might be slightly inconvenient for some.

Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Ichinoi, Aso, 06/26 – 06/27
ⓒTABIYA
The access road to the ryokan is narrow, making it difficult for large vehicles to enter. Please park at the parking lot in front of the Kurokawa Onsen Information Center and contact the ryokan. Our staff will pick you up along with your luggage.
We serve a kaiseki course that includes Kumamoto's local specialty, basashi (horse meat sashimi). Since the restaurants in the hot spring village close early, you can comfortably enjoy your meal inside the ryokan.
We have a quiet outdoor open-air bath surrounded by the forest, as well as a small indoor bath. The water is a sulfur hot spring, which will leave your skin feeling smooth after bathing.
We recommend the 27㎡ tatami room. It features two beds and a veranda overlooking an open garden, offering a more spacious and relaxing environment than our standard rooms.
It takes about a 5-minute walk from the ryokan to the village center. It's an easy walking distance, yet the area around the ryokan remains very quiet with fewer people.
