I booked the half-day morning tour, and the driver arrived right on time. Upon arrival, the friendly staff greeted us and handed everyone a bottle of cold water to stay hydrated in the tropical heat.

As we walked in, one of the elephants wandered right up to greet us. Since it’s a protected sanctuary, they aren't afraid of humans at all—in fact, they seemed genuinely excited to see us!

They almost look like they're smiling! It was incredibly endearing, not intimidating at all.

We snapped a quick photo before starting the activities. At this point, we still looked like typical tourists, but that was about to change quickly! Haha.

The elephants seemed to know we were there to feed and bathe them, hanging around nearby expectantly.

The staff gave us a few bananas to feed them right away. They gently took them right out of our hands with their trunks.

We quickly changed into our swimwear/rash guards in the changing rooms and got ready for the real work!

First up: Making Elephant Treats. The guide explained the dietary needs and nutrition of the elephants, making it an educational experience rather than just a quick photo op.

We hand-kneaded nutritional protein balls made of bananas, rice bran, and supplements. It was surprisingly fun!

The squishy texture is strangely therapeutic and addictive. Everyone in our group got fully involved.

The Mud Bath Experience

Next was the mud bath! We scooped up mud in buckets and poured it over the elephants, then rubbed it into their skin.

Our guide explained that elephants use mud as a natural sunscreen and insect repellent to protect their sensitive skin.

We did this in small groups. I watched the others go first to see how it was done.

I dived right in without hesitation! Their skin feels much rougher than it looks, which actually made it easier to pack the mud on.

Where else would you ever get to do this? I had the absolute best time... though I think I spent 90% of the time just scrubbing the elephant's backside! Haha.

Feeding Time

Now it was time to feed them the protein balls we made, along with more bananas.

Feeding them the very treats we hand-crafted was so rewarding. They gobbled them down happily, and it was amazing to see how much they enjoyed our "cooking"!

River Bathing Experience

With brushes and buckets in hand, we prepared to head down to the natural stream for bath time.

The walk to the river took less than 5 minutes.

It was adorable watching them rush into the water first, knowing exactly what time it was. Because this sanctuary strictly bans riding and shows, the elephants are incredibly relaxed and happy.

The river water came up to about waist-deep. It wasn't too deep, but the elephants happily submerged themselves completely.

The water temperature was perfectly refreshing—cool but very comfortable. The elephants are so gentle and well-cared-for.

The absolute highlight of the half-day tour was scrubbing them down in the river. Brushing their thick skin while they relaxed in the water is a memory I will cherish forever.

They lay there so peacefully next to us. Everyone in our group agreed that this river bath was the best part of the entire experience.

Photos & Wrap-up

After the bath, we had some time for final photos, treats, and watching them playfully splash around.

We got some incredible photos in the river with two of the elephants. They even sprayed water from their trunks for the camera—you have to see the video!

While others were posing, I spent my last few minutes feeding the remaining bananas to my new friends. I was so sad to say goodbye!

And that wrapped up our tour! We took a short truck ride back to the main entrance.
