Since photography is banned inside, I debated whether to write about this. However, I wanted to share my genuine experience and thoughts on the layout and crowd management to help you plan your trip.

What is the Provisional Government Site?

Established in 1919 following the historic March 1st Independence Movement,

this building served as the base for Korean independence activists

who fled to Shanghai during the Japanese colonial era.

It represents the first democratic republican government of Korea,

where leaders drafted constitutions, conducted diplomatic relations,

and supported independence forces despite constant relocation and oppression.

Today, it stands as a preserved heritage site in Shanghai,

offering a fascinating window into the complex, shared history of the region.

If you've studied modern Asian history, you've likely heard of this site.

Since it's located right in the heart of Shanghai,

I made sure to add it to my travel itinerary.

You can easily purchase tickets at the entrance using Alipay.

They will issue a physical paper ticket like the one shown above.

Now, for my honest review: it was a bit of a challenging experience...

Issue 1. The space is incredibly tight, and you are constantly shuffled forward in a single-file line with absolutely no room to pause.

Issue 2. While there are many interesting photos and historic documents on display, the constant pressure of the crowd makes it nearly impossible to stop and actually read the English or Chinese explanations.

Issue 3. At certain points, the narrow hallway splits into left and right lanes. If you end up on the left side, you can't view the exhibits on the right wall at all because other visitors completely block your line of sight.

Because of these factors, the tour felt a bit rushed and overwhelming.

However, the exterior of the building is highly photogenic and historic.

Most visitors line up near the entrance gate to take a commemorative photo.

It's very easy to spot because of the long queue of people waiting for their turn.

Since it was raining and the line was moving quickly,

I rushed my photo and ended up with my eyes closed! ✨

Make sure to take your time and snap a beautiful keepsake when you visit!

✔︎ Final Verdict on the Korean Provisional Government Site

If you are visiting purely to appreciate the profound historical significance, you will find it highly rewarding.

However, if you are expecting a relaxed, spacious museum experience, you might leave feeling a bit disappointed by the crowds.

Even so, it remains an incredibly important historical landmark in Shanghai that is well worth a spot on your itinerary.
