While planning our 4-day, 3-night family trip to Kobe with my child,

I spent the most time trying to figure out where to stay.

Usually, when people look for accommodations in Kobe,

they start by searching for hotels in downtown Sannomiya.

However, our family decided on a hotel near Kobe Airport instead.

Our reasons were pretty simple:

First, easy access to Kobe Airport

Second, a free shuttle bus to Sannomiya

Third, how incredibly easy it is to get to Kobe Animal Kingdom

It turns out there weren't many places that checked all three boxes.

And that’s how we ended up choosing the Kobe Portopia Hotel!

(The official name is Kobe Portopia Hotel,

though some people also call it Kobe Portpia Hotel!)

Shimin-Hiroba (Citizen's Square) Station on the Port Liner

(an automated monorail line), less than a 5-minute walk away.

With around 700 rooms across the Main and South wings,

it is widely known as the closest hotel to Kobe Airport

among all the major properties in the city.

Stepping off the shuttle bus and walking in to check in,

our very first impression was that

it felt like a truly luxury hotel experience.

They also have several wheelchairs available on-site,

so if you’re traveling to Kobe with elderly parents who have mobility needs,

I highly recommend the 4-star Kobe Portopia Hotel!

Our Room Review: Kobe Portopia Hotel

Room Type

Since we’re a family of three (including an elementary schooler),

we booked the Standard Triple Room in the Main Building.

Here are the morning and night views from the Kobe Portopia Hotel.

It had been a while since we each had our own bed, which was so comfortable and nice!

The room itself was quite spacious overall,

making it super easy to unpack and organize our luggage.

The bathroom and toilet area were cozy and compact, as you'd expect in Japan,

but with so many other great perks, it didn't bother us at all.

Best of all, they provided plenty of useful amenities,

which really came in handy during our stay.

The night view was even better from the lounge than the room!

When you search for reviews on Kobe Portopia Hotel's night views,

you'll see plenty of posts showcasing the guest rooms.

However, for me, the view from the high-floor lounge

where we had dinner was far more breathtaking.

Both breakfast and dinner are served at

GOCOCU, the Sky Grill Buffet on the 30th floor

of the Kobe Portopia Hotel.

Since our family had other plans during the day,

we skipped breakfast and went straight for the dinner buffet instead!

The guest room view is great, but if you're planning dinner at the hotel,

I highly recommend checking out the sky lounge views.

Fantastic amenities—everything you need is right inside!

Another huge advantage of Kobe Portopia Hotel

is that you don't even have to leave the building.

With cafes, restaurants, a convenience store,

a swimming pool, fitness center, and shopping options

all under one roof,

it made getting around with a child incredibly convenient.

It's incredibly accommodating not just for kids, but also for elderly parents

if you're planning a multi-generational family staycation.

If you're looking for a relaxing family getaway in Kobe,

we didn't really spend time looking around,

Why We Chose the Kobe Portopia Hotel

(feat. Kobe Animal Kingdom)

As I mentioned earlier, when looking for a budget-friendly hotel in Kobe,

I based my decision on three main criteria.

1. Proximity to Kobe Airport

It saves so much precious travel time when arriving and departing.

2. Free Shuttle Bus to Sannomiya

Whenever we wanted to head downtown for sightseeing,

we could travel stress-free without having to navigate the subway system.

Best of all, the hotel shuttle bus is completely free,

which helped us save quite a bit on transit costs!

3. Close to Kobe Animal Kingdom

Since we planned to get to Kobe Animal Kingdom right at opening time,

we wanted a hotel that was super close to the station.

Kobe Portopia Hotel is located on the Port Liner line,

which goes straight to Kobe Animal Kingdom without any transfers.

This made planning our zoo day with our child so much easier!

There aren't many hotels that perfectly hit

all three of these transit boxes at once,

which is why this was such a highly satisfying, budget-friendly stay in Kobe.

How to Get to Kobe Airport from Kobe Portopia Hotel

If your travel plans include flying in or out of Kobe Airport,

staying at the Kobe Portopia Hotel is incredibly convenient.

Kobe Airport → Bay Shuttle (approx. 2-3 mins) → Port Liner Boarding Station

Take the Port Liner to Shimin-Hiroba Station (approx. 8 mins)

Directly connected to the hotel from the station via a pedestrian walkway

Even with the transfers, getting from the airport to the hotel

takes only about 15 minutes in total!

This made traveling with a kid and tons of luggage

absolutely stress-free.

How to Get to Sannomiya

from Kobe Portopia Hotel & Shuttle Bus Timetable

For our Sannomiya downtown sightseeing,

we took full advantage of the Kobe Portopia Hotel's free shuttle bus.

The hotel's complimentary shuttle service is

an incredibly useful amenity for travelers who aren't familiar with local transit,

or for anyone on a family trip to Kobe, Japan with kids!

Free Shuttle Bus Timetable

from Sannomiya to Kobe Portopia Hotel

To catch the shuttle from Sannomiya to Kobe Portopia Hotel,

head to the 1st floor of the Mint Kobe (MINT KOBE) building

and wait at Platform 8 of the Sannomiya Bus Terminal.

The shuttle runs every 20 minutes (on the hour, at :20, and :40),

making it super convenient,

and takes about 20 minutes to get from Sannomiya Station to the hotel.

Just like the outbound trip, reservations cannot be made in advance, and

Boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis according to the queue,

so we highly recommend arriving with some time to spare during peak seasons!
