I highly recommend **Grill Ippei as a fantastic restaurant to visit**.

Grill Ippei's Sannomiya branch is

an old, established Western-style restaurant founded in 1952,

and their beef cutlet is the signature dish.

It's super easy to find, located just a **2-minute walk from Sannomiya Station**,

but because it's so popular with locals, an **"open run" (arriving before opening) is a must**!

Kobe Trip: Do You *Have* to Eat Gyukatsu?

When planning your Kobe trip, I bet many of you start by

searching for gyukatsu restaurants.

We initially insisted on gyukatsu too,

but we found that most of the popular gyukatsu spots clustered in tourist areas

were expensive and had long waits,

and honestly, many of them turned out to be quite disappointing.

So, instead of gyukatsu,

we chose Grill Ippei, a Western-style restaurant beloved by Sannomiya locals,

and it was truly a fantastic choice!

The juicy beef cutlet practically melts in your mouth!

I'll share an honest review, from its location to our open-run experience and menu thoughts!

What Kind of Place is Grill Ippei?

A Half-Century of History That Overcame the Great Kobe Earthquake

Grill Ippei, founded in Shinkaichi, Kobe in 1952,

stood firm through the ordeal of the Great Kobe Earthquake, a major disaster in 1995,

maintaining its position with resilience,

making it a miraculous old establishment that has carried on its long tradition.

Thanks to its history of preserving its unique taste and recipes even amidst natural disasters,

today, it's more than just a restaurant to locals;

it's a traditional eatery that embodies Kobe's pain and recovery.

The Sannomiya area, where Grill Ippei is located,

is a central hub for Kobe's transportation and Sannomiya's commercial district.

With many shopping malls and diverse restaurants concentrated here,

it's in an easy-to-find location.

You can reach it in just a 2-minute walk from Sannomiya Station.

There's no dedicated parking, and since it's right by the station, we recommend using public transport.

Open Run with Kids & Waiting Experience

Grill Ippei Sannomiya is famous for its long waits,

so our family decided to do an "open run" (arrive before opening).

Even with an open run, we were surprised to find a wait, but

thankfully, the waiting time wasn't too long.

We waited for about 10 minutes.

You need to get a ticket from the machine in front of the restaurant to wait,

so **when you arrive at Grill Ippei, definitely grab a ticket first!**

Beyond the 1st-floor dining area, there's a separate waiting room on the 3rd floor,

which means if you have a waiting number,

you have the advantage of being able to wait comfortably seated.

If you're traveling to Kobe with kids,

you can wait more comfortably here compared to other popular restaurants.

In any case, if you don't do an open run, the waiting time

could be much longer,

so I recommend visiting early,

avoiding popular lunch and dinner hours.

Payment Methods

Many old traditional restaurants in Japan still only accept cash,

but Grill Ippei Sannomiya branch

accepted both cash and card payments.

Even travelers who prefer using cards more often during their Kobe trip in Japan

can visit with ease.

Menu Review, Recommended Dishes

We ordered Omurice and Beef Katsu.

Beef Katsu: A Must-Try Dish!

Seriously, this is a dish I'd recommend not just once, but two or three times over!

It's fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside,

with succulent beef generously coated in a rich demiglace sauce.

From the moment you take a bite,

it just melts in your mouth.

While the Omurice, with its delicate egg and

demiglace sauce, was certainly delicious,

it felt like something you could find anywhere. It was good, but not uniquely special!

So, personally, I felt that Omurice

isn't necessarily a must-order at Grill Itpei.

Instead, if I visit again, I'm determined to try the Hayashi Rice,

which often sells out!

(Everyone kept asking if the Hayashi Rice was sold out, you know?)

Seeing it sell out so quickly made me think it must be incredibly delicious.

I definitely need to try it for myself! Haha.

I recommend the combination of Beef Katsu and Hayashi Rice.

(I haven't actually tried the Hayashi Rice at Grill Itpei yet, but...

Instead of Gyukatsu,

Here's why I Recommend Grill Itpei's Beef Katsu

Gyukatsu restaurants, often clustered around tourist spots,

tend to be pricey and have long waiting lines,

and frankly, I often found their taste a bit disappointing.

Grill Itpei, on the other hand, is a beloved local spot, a true veteran restaurant,

where you can savor a taste that's been proven delicious over time,

all at a reasonable price.

So, when you're traveling in Kobe, don't just stick to searching for Gyukatsu spots.

Instead, try Grill Itpei Sannomiya – a true local gem

that locals absolutely love!

Also Recommended for Family Trips with Children!

When I visited Kobe with my child,

both the Beef Katsu and Omurice were dishes

that my child absolutely loved and ate so well.

With their mild and tender flavors,

they were perfectly suited for a child's palate without being overwhelming.
