Hey everyone, it's Yuncooing! |
Our independent road trip to Fukuoka, Japan, at 30 weeks pregnant!
Since I was traveling with my in-laws,
I figured it would be much easier to rent a car
rather than navigating subways and trains with a large group.
So, before our trip, I went ahead and booked
our Fukuoka rental car through Klook.

Fukuoka, Japan Independent Travel Car Rental

Because we had a total of 11 people in our group,
we booked two passenger vans from Gogo Rent-a-Car.
When booking our Fukuoka rental car on Klook, we chose a package
that included the base rate, unlimited mileage, local taxes,
and Klook's own insurance coverage.
When renting a car in Japan,
getting insurance is an absolute MUST...⭐
Don't forget!

We received a message on KakaoTalk 1 day before our rental!
Since a lot of Korean tourists use this service,
the messages were in Korean, making communication super easy.
They mentioned that sending these in advance
would speed up the pickup process,
but they still asked for them again at the counter, which was a bit confusing.

Once we arrived at Fukuoka Airport,
we went to the 1st-floor arrivals area, stepped out of Exit A3,
crossed the crosswalk to the left,
and waited at sign #15 marked 'General Vehicles'.

Because our group was so large,
we couldn't all fit into the shuttle van at once.
So, the drivers and myself (the main booker)
went to the rental office first,
and the shuttle came back to pick up the rest of the family.

The rental office is incredibly close—
only about a 5-minute drive from the airport.

After handing over our passports and IDPs one more time,

we were briefed on the insurance policy and vehicle documents,
and we purchased an ETC (electronic toll collection) card separately.
Even though we already had insurance through Klook,
Gogo Rent-a-Car also offered their own insurance options at the counter.

In Japan, rental companies will charge you for even the tiniest scratch,
so make sure to take detailed photos of the car before you drive off.
Also, if you get into an accident or scrape the car,
you MUST call the police immediately from the scene.
With the keys to our two vans in hand,
we headed straight to Beppu!

I was in the passenger seat,
but the right-hand drive still felt so awkward! Haha.
It was my husband's first time driving in Japan
(honestly, it was our first trip to Japan ever),
and he kept mixing up the windshield wipers and the turn signals!

We had an amazing 4-day, 3-night trip
exploring the outskirts of Fukuoka with our rental cars!

On our final day,
we filled up the gas tanks at a station near the airport
right before drop-off.

Then we returned the cars.

We thought we'd just hand over the keys and rush to the airport,
but the staff informed us there was a scratch on one of the vans
and that we had to pay a penalty.
We hadn't been in an accident and didn't even notice the scratch,
so we obviously hadn't called the police.
It was only discovered by the rental staff
during the return inspection at Gogo Rent-a-Car.
Since I was 30 weeks pregnant and exhausted,
I was resting in the office and didn't even go out to look at the damaged car,
meaning I never took photos of the scratch myself.
We suddenly had to pay out of pocket: 30,000 JPY for the minor scratch
and 20,000 JPY for the NOC (Non-Operation Charge) since the car was still drivable,
totaling 50,000 JPY (about $330).
We had a flight to catch, so we paid it, but left feeling pretty frustrated.
Being charged the 20,000 JPY NOC felt especially unfair.
It's meant to cover lost revenue while the car is being repaired,
but they clearly weren't going to fix that tiny scratch immediately.
Losing that money definitely stung!

Once we got back home, I logged into Klook
and filed an insurance claim.
Honestly, if we had just taken photos of the scratch at the scene,
this would have been resolved much faster.
Because we were flustered and no one took pictures of the damage,
we had to wait for Gogo Rent-a-Car
to send us their photos,
which significantly delayed the process.

I started the process via the live chat on their website,
and then exchanged documents via email
with representatives from AXA and Klook.

We traveled in January 2026, and the claim was finalized in June 2026,

and I received an insurance payout of $316.35!

After exiting through Exit A3 on the 1st floor arrivals level of Fukuoka Airport, cross the crosswalk on the left and wait in front of the 'General Vehicles' sign at No. 15. The rental car company office is located about 5 minutes from the airport.
For a 24-hour period, the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is available for 1,100 yen. Additionally, a 24-hour full coverage insurance is provided for 1,650 yen.
A total of 50,000 yen was paid, consisting of 30,000 yen for the minor scratch and 20,000 yen for the Non-Operation Charge (NOC) for a drivable vehicle. Since the police were not called at the time of the incident, the staff discovered the scratch during the return process and charged this amount.
You will need the receipt paid at the rental car company, the rental agreement, accident-related documents, and personal identification documents. Taking photos of the vehicle where the accident or scratch occurred yourself can significantly shorten the insurance processing time.
