If you're exploring Sydney and find yourself near Chinatown,
you'll be spoiled for choice with the array of Chinese restaurants.
As a huge fan of Malatang and Malaxiangguo from back home,
seeing all these options immediately sparked a craving for that unique 'mala' spice!
Today, I'm excited to introduce you to Kingway Malatang,
a Sydney eatery I highly recommend!

Hours: Daily, 11:00 AM - 1:00 AM Closed: Never |
Kingway Malatang is open all year round and boasts fantastic accessibility,
located right near the Chinatown station.
Since our accommodation was nearby,
we stopped by to grab some Malaxiangguo for takeout.

The interior of Kingway Malatang is surprisingly spacious,
much larger than it appears from the outside, accommodating quite a crowd.
We visited late in the evening, and it was still bustling with diners,
a clear sign of its popularity.

The ordering process for Malatang and Malaxiangguo here
is just like what you'd find in many places back home.
First, you fill a basket with your desired ingredients.
Then, you choose between a Malatang base (A) or Malaxiangguo (B),
your basket is weighed, and you pay at the counter.

The menu indicated that Classic, Szechuan, and Pork Bone
were popular broth bases for Malatang!
If you're craving Malatang, you'll likely go for A01. Classic-spicy.
For Malaxiangguo, like us, you'll want to choose
B12. Stir-Fried Spicy Hot Pot!
Pricing is by weight:
Malatang is 19 AUD for 500g
Malaxiangguo is 21 AUD for 500g.
Compared to what we've seen elsewhere, where Malatang and Malaxiangguo
can have a nearly double price difference, here in Australia,
it's only about a 10% difference. This made the Malaxiangguo feel quite reasonably priced.

Kingway Malatang offers an impressive variety of ingredients.
From fresh vegetables, noodles, and meats to wontons, fish cakes, and seafood,
there were far more options than I've encountered in similar Malatang spots.

We went with a classic selection: bok choy, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots,
cabbage, potatoes, wide glass noodles, and some meat.
Unlike some places where meat is an extra add-on,
at Kingway Malatang, it's included in the total weight,
so you can pile it on without worrying about additional costs!

Our basket weighed about 580g, totaling 24.36 AUD,
which was equivalent to approximately ~$16.
We were just looking for a light late-night snack back at our hotel,
so we only filled it up for about one person.

After placing our takeout order, we received a numbered ticket.
We just kept an eye on the electronic board for our number to appear, then picked up our food.

While waiting for our food, they provided an empty container
so we could customize our sauces.
You can load up on as much as you like!
For a truly delicious dipping sauce, try mixing oyster sauce, chili oil,
peanut sauce, and garlic – it's a winning combination!

We got our Malaxiangguo takeout back to our hotel within 5 minutes
and eagerly opened it up.
Visually, it was a definite winner!
The Malaxiangguo was savory and flavorful,
though the 'mala' numbing spice wasn't overwhelmingly strong, which was perfect for us.
My one regret? Not ordering a side of steamed rice.
It was so perfectly savory, it would have been an absolute 'rice thief' –
meaning it's so good, you'll need more rice!

The meat was tender and fresh, with no unpleasant odor,
and the vegetables were cooked just right, offering a delightful texture.
We paired it with some local beer, and it was the ideal complement.
Next time, I definitely won't forget to order a bowl of rice to go with it!
Sydney's Chinatown is brimming with countless Chinese eateries and Malatang restaurants.
Kingway Malatang stood out with its reasonable Malaxiangguo pricing,
and impressive variety of ingredients, making it a highly satisfying choice.
If you find yourself craving authentic 'mala' flavors in Sydney,
be sure to give Kingway Malatang a visit!

Kingway Malatang operates daily from 11 AM to 1 AM, year-round. It is conveniently located at Shop 1A/722 George St, Haymarket NSW 2000, right near Sydney Chinatown Station.
First, you fill a basket with various ingredients, then choose your desired flavor from either Malatang base (A) or Mala Xiang Guo (B). After that, the ingredients are weighed, and you pay accordingly. Prices are determined by weight; Malatang costs 19 AUD for 500g, and Mala Xiang Guo costs 21 AUD for 500g.
There is a much wider variety of ingredients than in Korea, including vegetables, noodles, meat, wontons, fish cakes, and seafood. Meat is weighed and does not incur an additional charge. When ordering Mala Xiang Guo, you should select B12. Stir-Fried Spicy Hot Pot.
The Mala Xiang Guo was savory but didn't have an overly strong mala flavor. The meat was clean and flavorful without any gamey taste, and the vegetables had a pleasant texture. Due to its savory taste, it is recommended to enjoy it with a bowl of plain rice or as a snack with beer.
