Kansai Airport to Kobe Ferry 2026: Bay Shuttle Guide

For my latest adventure, I headed out on a scenic trip combining Kobe and Osaka.

Since my itinerary kicked off in Kobe, I needed to make my way there directly after landing at Kansai International Airport (KIX).

Kansai Airport to Kobe: Travel Options

There are three main ways to travel from Kansai Airport to Kobe: the high-speed ferry, the limousine bus, or taking the JR Train via Terminal 1.

While the ferry and limousine bus take a similar amount of time, the JR Train route is highly inefficient in terms of both cost and travel time, so I wouldn't recommend it.

We opted for the most budget-friendly option: the high-speed ferry (Kobe Bay Shuttle).

Arriving at Terminal 2 & Buying Ferry Tickets

If you fly with budget carriers like Peach Aviation or Jeju Air, you will land at Kansai International Airport Terminal 2.

Once you clear customs and step into the arrival lobby, the High-Speed Ferry Ticket Counter is located right in front of you.

International visitors can take advantage of a massive discount by showing their passport: one-way tickets are just ~$3 (500 JPY) for adults and ~$1.50 (250 JPY) for children.

They accept both credit cards and cash, so you can easily purchase your ticket even if you haven't exchanged physical Japanese Yen yet.

Ferries run roughly once every hour, and the ticket counter staff will clearly explain where to catch the shuttle bus to the pier.

Catching the Free Shuttle Bus

To get to the ferry pier, you need to take a free shuttle bus. Exit the terminal, turn left immediately, and walk all the way to the end to find the shuttle bus stop.

We landed at 1:30 PM and worried we might miss the 2:35 PM departure. Luckily, immigration at Terminal 2 moves incredibly fast, leaving us with plenty of time to spare.

The shuttle bus runs right on schedule and takes about 10 minutes from Terminal 2 to the ferry pier.

Boarding the Bay Shuttle

Once you step off the bus, the ferry boarding dock is right in front of you. The entire transfer process is incredibly seamless.

Simply show the QR code on your printed ticket to the staff, and you're good to board.

Since this is a high-speed vessel, the boat is smaller than typical passenger ferries.

Inside, there is a display showing travel information. Interestingly, the timetable on screen was showing the return route (Kobe to KIX) during our ride.

The seats are actually quite spacious and comfortable with plenty of legroom. It was highly popular, and the boat was almost completely full.

It was a bit windy during our trip, so the boat swayed quite a bit. If you're prone to motion sickness, I highly recommend taking some dramamine before boarding.

We pulled up to Kobe Port in exactly 30 minutes! Because it's a high-speed boat, the journey felt incredibly fast.

Getting from Kobe Port to Sannomiya Station

Once you arrive at Kobe Port, you need to head to Kobe Airport to catch the Port Liner monorail into downtown Kobe.

There is a free connection shuttle bus waiting at the pier to take you to the airport terminal.

※ Pro Tip: Try to exit the ferry quickly! The shuttle bus is relatively small compared to the ferry capacity, so if you're slow getting off, you might have to wait for the next bus.

The shuttle bus ride is super short—just one stop and you're at Kobe Airport.

As soon as you step off the bus, look to your right inside the airport entrance. You'll see an escalator heading up to the second floor.

Head up to the 2nd floor to access the Port Liner station platform bound for Sannomiya.

The signage on the 2nd floor is clearly translated into English, Korean, and Chinese, making it incredibly easy to follow right to the ticket gates.

You can use major IC cards (like Suica, Pasmo, or ICOCA) to tap through the gates. If you don't have one, you can purchase a ticket from the vending machines.

The fare is ~$2 (340 JPY) and the train takes about 20 minutes to reach Sannomiya Station.

Since Kobe Airport is the terminal station for the Port Liner, you don't have to worry about boarding the train in the wrong direction.

We arrived at Sannomiya Station at 3:50 PM. The entire transit from the moment we boarded the first shuttle at KIX took about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The Kobe Bay Shuttle is incredibly cheap and fast, but the multiple transfers (bus → ferry → bus → monorail) can feel slightly tedious if you have heavy luggage.

If you're looking to save money while enjoying a unique scenic route across the bay, the ferry is an amazing option. But if you want a seamless, transfer-free journey, the limousine bus might suit you better.
