Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji Tour

Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji Tour
Hi everyone! It's travel blogger Lisa here :)
For those planning a DIY trip to Taipei, Taiwan!
Have you heard of the famous Taiwan Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji day tour, where you can visit Yehliu, Shifen, and Jiufen all in one day without renting a car—
and all for just ~$6?
But when you start researching, there's always one thing that gets super confusing.
"What is the difference between Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji and Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji?"
For this trip, I decided to go with the Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji (Waterfall) route.
These two itineraries differ by just one single stop!
So today, using the classic Taiwan Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji tour as our baseline,
I'll break down the differences, highlights of Jinguashih, and do a complete price comparison for you.

🚨 Today's Travel Log
My reviews of Yehliu, Shifen, and Jiufen are based on my actual personal experiences (100% self-funded!), while the Jinguashih details are compiled from official sources. (As of July 2026)
The Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji tour is a day-long bus tour covering Yehliu, Shifen, Jinguashih, and Jiufen.
It's highly recommended if you want to see **all the must-visit spots outside Taipei in one go without renting a car!**

1. Why I Recommend the Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji Tour

Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji Tour
When planning a trip to Taipei,
you've probably searched for Jiufen, which famously inspired the look of Spirited Away,
and Yehliu Geopark, which looks like the surface of Mars.

Yehliu Geopark
These are definitely the most iconic and popular spots right outside Taipei!
Instead of trying to navigate there on your own,
most travelers opt for a guided bus tour.
1) Super affordable—starting around ~$6 to ~$12
2) Stress-free bus transit, but total freedom to explore at each stop
Because of these two major perks,
way more people choose the bus tour over trying to go solo.
I went with a bus tour myself this time, and
this is the exact tour I booked:
✔️ Price per person: ~$7
✔️ Klook Promo Code: 세시간전260001
✔️ Tour Guide: Mr. Sung Woo-yong
The verdict? Absolutely loved it!
The transportation was seamless, the itinerary was packed with goodness,
and our guide was so entertaining that it made the whole trip incredibly memorable.
Along with my detailed review,
I’ll explain the difference between the Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji and Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji routes
and why I ultimately decided to go with the Waterfall (Pao-Ji) option.
2. Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji vs. Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji: What's the Difference?

So, what exactly is the difference between Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji and Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji?
These terms keep popping up when you search, but they're actually just acronyms
made from the first syllables of each destination!
✔️ Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji = Yehliu + Shifen + Jinguashih + Jiufen
✔️ Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji = Yehliu + Shifen + Shifen Waterfall + Jiufen
Notice the pattern?
Only one single stop is different.
Category | Yeh-Shih-Chin-Ji | Yeh-Shih-Pao-Ji |
Departure Time | 10:30 AM | 11:00 AM |
Duration | 10.5 hours | 9 hours |
Price | ~$6 | ~$7 |
Key Difference | Jinguashih | Waterfall |
Focus | Gold Mining History Village | Natural Waterfall |
Recommended for | History + Vibes | Nature + Scenery |
✔️ Yehliu, Shifen Sky Lanterns, and Jiufen are completely identical in both courses!

So, what kind of place is Jinguashi, you ask?
It’s a preserved gold mining town from the Japanese colonial era.
The absolute highlight here is getting to touch a real 220kg block of 99% pure gold
at the Jinguashi Gold Museum!
📍 Quick info for the Jinguashi Gold Museum:
Open weekdays 09:30–17:00 / weekends & holidays 09:30–18:00. Admission is NT$80 (approx. ~$2).

But why did I choose the Shifen Waterfall (Yeh-Shi-Pock-Ji) course instead?
When you have a jam-packed, single-day itinerary,
touring a museum can eat up quite a bit of your precious time.
Even after reading tons of reviews, many travelers said, "Both are great, but if you have to choose one, go with the waterfall."
Most importantly, I figured the waterfall route would give me a more relaxed timeline
to fully enjoy the evening lantern vibes in Jiufen.
🚨 Quick Travel Tip! |
History & Museums ➜ Jinguashi (Yeh-Shi-Jin-Ji) Nature, Scenery, & Cozy Alleyways ➜ Shifen Waterfall (Yeh-Shi-Pock-Ji) If you're still on the fence, I highly recommend the Waterfall course like I did! |
3. My Honest, Hands-On Review of Yehliu, Shifen, and Jiufen
Now, here is my 100% authentic review from the trip!
For context, I boarded the tour bus at Ximending Station at 11:00 AM.

1) Yehliu Geopark
The unique rock formations, which look like a desert landscape, meet the vast ocean,
and the combination is absolutely stunning.
It genuinely feels like walking on Mars!

The line to take a photo with the famous Queen's Head rock was over 20 minutes long,
so I just snapped a photo from the back angle instead—and it turned out great!
✔️ Parasols, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes are absolute musts!

2) Shifen Sky Lanterns

This is the place where you write your wishes on a lantern and release it into the sky right from the train tracks.
The staff here are absolute pros at taking photos and videos for you, so there's no need to bring a tripod!

BBQ Chicken Wing Rice
✔️ The BBQ Chicken Wing Rice (NT$75) was hands-down the best thing I ate during my entire Taiwan trip!
It’s not spicy, making it a crowd-pleaser that everyone will love. Highly recommended!

Shifen Waterfall
3) Shifen Waterfall (The highlight of the Waterfall course!)
It's just a quick 2-minute drive from the lantern-releasing spot.
They call it the "Niagara of Taiwan," but...
honestly, it didn't quite live up to that massive title haha.
Still, it's a beautiful spot that's absolutely perfect for photos!

Wild Boar Sausage
✔️ Wild Boar Sausage in front of the waterfall (NT$60 / approx. ~$1)
Grab a bottle of beer and enjoy it street-style right there.
It's incredibly juicy and perfectly salty, making it the ultimate pairing with a cold beer.

Jiufen
4) Jiufen
It's the perfect spot to experience both daytime vibes and the glowing red lanterns at night.
Our tour arrived around 5:40 PM, which was perfect timing.
My recommended route: do some shopping for pineapple cakes (fengli su) and tea leaves,
grab some savory shrimp balls, and then head right over to the tofu pudding shaved ice stall across the way!

Tofu Pudding Shaved Ice
The Tofu Pudding Shaved Ice (NT$60) is an absolute must-try.

* I read reviews saying the smell of stinky tofu was overwhelming, but honestly, I barely noticed it.
There were only one or two shops selling it near the entrance.

Jiufen Bus Stop
If there was one slight disappointment,
it’s that Shifen Waterfall wasn't quite as majestic as I had expected...
If you're looking for raw, majestic nature, it might feel a tiny bit lacking.
But honestly, the sausage + beer healing combo completely makes up for it!! 🍺🍺
🚨 Quick Travel Tip here! |
The alleys of Jiufen are incredibly crowded and maze-like, but the guide points out all the best photo spots, so you don't have to worry about getting lost. You can also just search Jiufen Photo Spot on Google Maps! |
4. Taiwan Day Tour Price Comparison

For the Shifen sky lanterns, you can pay the guide directly on-site,
and they even accepted bank transfers based on the lowest real-time exchange rates,

5. Taiwan Tour FAQ

Q. Which is better: Yeh-Shi-Jin-Ji (with Jinguashi) or Yeh-Shi-Pao-Ji (with Shifen Waterfall)?
If you love history and museums, go for Yeh-Shi-Jin-Ji (Jinguashi),
but if you prefer nature and scenic vibes, go for Yeh-Shi-Pao-Ji.
I personally recommend the Pao-Ji (Waterfall) tour because it gives you more leisurely time to enjoy the evening views of Jiufen!
Q. It's my first trip to Taiwan. Is it okay to go solo?
Absolutely! The guide manages the itinerary and shows you all the photo spots,
so you can travel hassle-free even if you don't know anything about rental cars or public transport.
Since you travel by bus but explore freely once you arrive at each stop, it's perfect for solo travelers.

Q. I get bad motion sickness. Can I choose my seat?
If you board at Ximending, you can snag a seat near the front.
Pro-tip: Only the front seats have tables, making the long drive much more comfortable!
Q. Are all entrance fees included in the tour?
The Yehliu entrance fee and Shifen sky lanterns are typically not included.
Please make sure to check the product details before booking.
You can bring cash or simply do a bank transfer to the guide on the spot.

✅ Today's Journey Wrapped Up!
To sum up, the Taiwan Day Tour is for you if:
✔️ It's your first time in Taiwan and you have no idea how to plan the route
✔️ You want to visit Yehliu, Shifen, and Jiufen all at once without renting a car
✔️ You want to enjoy a packed itinerary on a budget in the ~$6 range
If any of these sound like you, I highly recommend it!
While Jinguashi (Yeh-Shi-Jin-Ji) is great if you love history and museums,
I much prefer Yeh-Shi-Pao-Ji
since it lets you enjoy the breathtaking Jiufen night views without rushing.

For a day tour in the ~$6 range, this itinerary is
an absolute no-brainer for both budget and convenience!! :)
