The 2026 Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival is already underway! Last year, I had the luxury of spending several days in Jinju, fully immersing myself in the festival's magic. This year, unfortunately, I'm abroad and couldn't make it. But don't worry, I'm here to share all the essential information and insider tips I've gathered from over a decade of visiting this incredible event.

The Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival runs for 16 days, from October 3rd to October 18th, 2026. This spectacular event takes place around Jinjuseong Fortress and along the Namgang River, making it one of Jinju's biggest annual celebrations. Personally, it's one of my favorite festivals, right alongside the Andong Mask Dance Festival, and I try to visit every year if I can.

Event Layout Map

During weekdays, bringing your car isn't usually a major hassle. Last year, perhaps due to rain, the crowds on weekdays were lighter than expected. However, if you plan to drive on Fridays or weekends, be prepared for severe traffic that can be incredibly stressful. I highly recommend arriving on foot or using public transport during peak times to avoid the congestion.

You don't need to meticulously follow every detail on the event layout map. The best way to experience the festival is simply to stroll along the Namgang River, taking in the beautiful lanterns and various festival booths. One small personal observation: while the overall scale of the festival seems to be growing, I've noticed a slight decrease in the number of lanterns floating directly on the Namgang River compared to previous years.

Key Viewing Points
Honestly, the festival booths and food stalls tend to be pretty similar year after year. So, let me share a few recommended walking routes and unique spots to truly capture the essence of the festival.

* Chokseoknu Pavilion: Follow the trail uphill to Chokseoknu, and you'll be treated to an absolutely breathtaking panoramic night view of the entire festival. A leisurely 30-minute walk up will allow you to take in the full spectacle of the lanterns spread across the river and fortress grounds. It's a fantastic vantage point from the north side.

* After descending, cross to the opposite riverbank and enjoy a serene walk past the music fountain. This path offers a different perspective of the lanterns.
* Yudeung Park and Jinjudaechop History Park: These parks are must-visit spots. While it can be challenging to get clear photos of the lanterns floating in the Namgang River from a distance, the lanterns displayed within these parks are perfect for close-up shots. You'll also find various folk culture experiences here, making it a great place to visit with kids.

Drone Show & Fireworks Display

Among the main events at the Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival, the Drone Light Show and Fireworks Display are truly spectacular and highly anticipated.
Schedule | Location | |
Drone Light Show | 10/03, 10/17 (7:50 PM) / 10/10 (8:00 PM) | Entire Venue |
Fireworks Display | 10/03, 10/09, 10/17 (8:00 PM) | Namgang River between Jinju Bridge & Cheonsu Bridge |
Both the drone show and fireworks can be comfortably enjoyed from anywhere along the Namgang River. Just be sure to check the dates and times to catch these dazzling performances!

The lanterns begin to light up at 6:00 PM. Visiting in the morning or early afternoon won't offer much to see as preparations are still underway. I recommend arriving as the sun sets to fully enjoy the glowing lanterns. They remain lit until midnight.

While a day trip is certainly feasible, I believe staying overnight for at least one night will create a more memorable festival experience. I've included some of my favorite accommodations and restaurants from past visits below for your reference.
