Planning a trip to Shanghai in 2026
and wondering where to base yourself?
When I recently returned to Shanghai,
I had to pause and think about the best neighborhood to stay in.
But honestly, that hesitation didn't last long!
From a traveler's perspective, nothing beats the convenience of
Nanjing East Road.
Today, I'm sharing my top recommendation for a downtown location
and a full review of my stay at the budget-friendly
Jinglai Hotel right by Nanjing Road!
Let me break down exactly why
I chose to stay in the Nanjing Road area.

First off, the Jinglai Hotel is located right on the
📍Nanjing East Road Pedestrian Street.
While it's slightly closer to People's Square Station than Nanjing East Road Station,
both are within an incredibly easy walking distance.
People's Square is a massive transit hub where you can catch
Lines 1, 2, and 8.
Line 2 is an absolute lifesaver—it connects you directly to major tourist hotspots
like Lujiazui and Jing'an Temple.

More importantly, if you're taking the Maglev train from Pudong International Airport,
you'll transfer at Longyang Road Station—which is on Line 2.
✅ Therefore, booking your first night near a Line 2 station
is the smartest move you can make!

Not only is Jinglai Hotel steps away from Line 2,
✅ the surrounding area is packed with incredible food and shopping.
The iconic Bund is roughly a mile away—
about a 20-minute walk.
You might think, "A 20-minute walk?" but as you stroll down the vibrant
Nanjing Road taking in the sights,
the time absolutely flies by.
Plus, right outside the hotel, you'll find massive malls housing global favorites
like M&M's World and Miniso, alongside popular local drink spots
like Heytea and Chagee.

Craving authentic local bites? Famous eateries like Dongbei Renjia (Northeastern Chinese cuisine)
and Lailai Xiaolong (soup dumplings) are just a 5-minute walk away.
With all these perks packed into one location,
booking the Jinglai Hotel was a complete no-brainer for me!
Let's dive into my actual
Jinglai Hotel stay experience!

Jinglai Hotel, Shanghai Bund East Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street Jinglai hotel 景莱酒店·轻奢(上海外滩南京东路步行街店) 📍 Check-in: 2:00 PM 📍 Check-out: 12:00 PM Location: Nan Jing Dong Lu, No. 740 上海市黄浦区南京东路740号 |
Jinglai Hotel offers an early 2:00 PM check-in and
a generous 12:00 PM check-out,
making it a great option for your final day in the city.
Even better? I booked a weekend stay for under ~$77 per night,
which is unbelievable value for this prime location.

The entrance is tucked into an alley off the main pedestrian street,
giving it a slightly older, vintage feel.
While the alley might look a bit quiet, it's right next to a school,
so the neighborhood feels very safe and secure.

The lobby is on the smaller side and was a bit crowded
with stored luggage from other guests.
However, aside from grabbing some complimentary tea or coffee,
you probably won't be spending much time hanging out down here anyway.

After completing the check-in process on the ground floor,
you simply head up one level to catch the elevator to your room.

We stayed in Single Room 8610 for two nights.
Interestingly, even though there were two of us, we were able to book a single room,
which made it incredibly budget-friendly!

As expected for a budget room in a major city center, the space was very compact.
Aside from the double bed (which easily fit two people),
there wasn't a ton of extra floor space.
Still, the bed was surprisingly plush and comfortable!

The room came stocked with essential amenities: two bottles of water, slippers, and hangers.
There was also a small table tucked into the corner—
perfect for enjoying some late-night takeout!

One thing I really appreciated was the smart layout.
The shower and the sink area are completely separated.
This means one person can shower while the other
brushes their teeth or washes their face—a huge time-saver!

There's a large full-length mirror right by the entrance,
with the bathroom located right next to it.
The entryway actually has the most open floor space,
so it's the best spot to lay out your suitcases.

The bathroom itself is minimalist, featuring just a shower and a toilet
enclosed by clear glass walls.
Keep in mind that the transparent glass might be a bit awkward
if you're traveling with someone you aren't completely comfortable with!
Overall, though, the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean.

Lastly, the room didn't really have a view.
The window was fitted with safety bars that obstructed the sightline.
On the bright side, the double-layered blackout curtains blocked out
the city lights completely, ensuring we got a fantastic night's sleep!

Located right in the heart of Nanjing East Road and
just steps from the People's Square Line 2 station,
Jinglai Hotel was easily my most satisfying stay during this Shanghai trip.
We paid under ~$154 total for a two-night weekend stay,
which is an absolute steal for this level of convenience.
Since Shanghai can be surprisingly expensive,
👉🏻 if you're looking to stretch your travel budget,
I highly recommend giving this hotel a look!
