After an amazing one-night, two-day getaway at Sol Beach Jindo, we were on the hunt for an authentic local dining experience. While Jindo Fisheries Market isn't right next door—it's about a 20-minute drive from Sol Beach Jindo—it was definitely on our list of must-visit spots in Jindo. We decided it was the perfect place for a memorable dinner.

We called ahead from Sol Beach Jindo and were told the market generally closes by 9:00 PM. So, we set off around 7:40 PM, giving us just enough time. However, upon arrival, we were surprised to find most of the market already winding down, almost as if it was completely closed!

After quickly parking, we rushed into Jindo Fisheries Market, and thankfully, one stall was still open. It seemed they were in the middle of tidying up for the night. We learned that while the 'Chojangjip' (a restaurant on the second floor where you can eat the fresh fish you've bought, paying a small seating fee) stays open until 9:00 PM, the market stalls themselves tend to close earlier.

The friendly owner of the open stall was incredibly accommodating. They even made a call to the upstairs restaurant on our behalf, ensuring we could still enjoy our dinner despite the late hour. Talk about going the extra mile for customers!

With flounder (Gwang-eo) currently in season and tasting fantastic, we decided to order one 4.4-pound (2 kg) flounder and a croaker (Mineo). Since we were pressed for time and the fish needed to be prepared, we focused on these two and took a quick peek at the other incredible seafood on display.

We spotted vibrant blue crabs, plump abalone, and fresh sea bass, among other delights.

There were also incredibly fresh sea snails, spoon worms (gaebul), sea squirts (meongge), octopus, and various clams, all looking absolutely pristine.

Although it was enough for two platters, the owner kindly arranged it all on one large plate for our family. There were no fillers, just an incredibly generous amount of fresh fish! The croaker, identifiable by its slightly deeper reddish hue in the center, was perfectly sliced alongside the flounder. As a special touch, the owner even prepared the croaker's swim bladder (burae) right on the cutting board. The total cost for this massive plate of fresh sashimi was an unbelievable ~$48! The owner repeatedly mentioned that we were getting such a great deal because they were in the process of closing up for the night.

I carried our fresh sashimi platter upstairs to the 'Chojangjip' restaurant. Once placed on our prepared table, it filled the entire spread with its vibrant colors and generous portions.

Croaker swim bladder is known for being rich in gelatin and amino acids, making it beneficial for growing children. Our eldest enjoyed it, finding it quite tasty, but our youngest wasn't quite as adventurous!

We asked for a side of sesame oil dip, a perfect accompaniment, and eagerly began to savor our delicious meal.

After finishing our sashimi, we handed over the fish bones to order a spicy fish stew (Maeuntang) and some rice. The restaurant then brought out a selection of complimentary side dishes (banchan). The 'Chojangjip' fees were quite reasonable: a seating fee of ~$3 per person, ~$1 for a bowl of rice, and a flat ~$2 for the Maeuntang per table. For our group of five, the total for these services came to ~$23.

As an extra treat, the owner from the fish stall upstairs gave us a few sea snails (sora) as a complimentary service. We added them to our spicy fish stew, which really elevated the flavors!

Inside the restaurant, a large photo of Jindo's famous 'Mysterious Sea Road' was prominently displayed, a captivating reminder of the island's unique natural wonders. We ended up being the last customers in the restaurant that evening, wrapping up our meal just as the 9:00 PM closing time arrived.

For a family of five, enjoying such a generous and delicious dinner for a total of approximately ~$71, it's safe to say this spot offers incredible value for money!
Final Thoughts from a Family Traveler
Even though we arrived at Jindo Fisheries Market late and had limited options for where to purchase our seafood, we were incredibly lucky to find such a wonderful owner. They ensured we could enjoy fresh flounder and croaker at an unbeatable price. A huge thank you to the owner for their kindness and excellent service, even at such a late hour!
While it's a bit of a drive from Sol Beach Jindo, if you're looking for an authentic, budget-friendly, and incredibly fresh sashimi experience, make sure to head to Jindo Fisheries Market a little earlier in the day. It's truly a hidden gem!
