A True Taipei Local Eatery

I stumbled upon this gem during a leisurely stroll with no particular destination in mind. The place had that undeniable local vibe, and while the interior wasn't sprawling, the long line of Taiwanese locals snaking out the door spoke volumes about the delicious food waiting inside.

It was right around lunchtime, so I decided this was the perfect spot to refuel before continuing my exploration.

As you wait in line, they take your order in sequence. Being a truly local Taipei spot, there's no English menu, nor are there pictures to guide you. But fear not, modern technology comes to the rescue!

Thankfully, it's all in traditional Chinese characters, so with a little help from a translation app, you can usually piece things together. When in doubt, ordering the first item on the menu is often a safe bet. I, however, opted for the classic move of peeking at what the locals ahead of me were ordering and simply pointing!

The Open Kitchen Experience

The restaurant features a sort of open kitchen where the father seems to be the culinary maestro, the mother manages the front of house, and their (presumably) child takes orders. It's a true family affair, adding to that authentic local charm.

The tables and interior space are quite snug. Many patrons come alone to this Taipei beef noodle spot, and in such cases, you'll often find yourself seated across from a stranger at the communal counter.

Are You Japanese?

When it was my turn, I went inside and sat down. Across from me, separated by a small divider, was a local stranger. The sauces and condiments were on my side of the table, and the person across from me gestured, asking if they could take them. I nodded, indicating it was fine.

"Arigato gozaimasu!" they said.

Me: (Nodding)

My internal monologue: (I thought they were Taiwanese, but are they Japanese? Even if so, this is Taiwan. Why are they speaking Japanese, not English?)

A moment later,

"Nihonjin desu ka?" (Are you Japanese?)

Me: "??? Iie, watashi wa Kankoku..." (No, I'm Kore—)

(Wait, that's not right!)

"No, no, I'm Korean."

I realized I'd almost answered in Japanese myself! It turns out the local thought I was Japanese.

Throughout my travels in Taiwan, I've often noticed the deep influence of Japan in various aspects. Not just in food and culture, but also in shops where staff frequently address you in Japanese before English after Chinese. While Japanese influence is present in many Southeast Asian countries, it feels particularly pronounced in Taiwan.

And then, my beef noodles arrived! The generous, thick cuts of beef were exactly what I hoped for, and the rich, flavorful broth was simply delicious. It was clear why this Taipei local hotspot always has a line out the door.

I found myself curious about the other items on the menu. I had only ordered one dish because I wasn't particularly hungry, but if I had known it would be this good, I might have ordered two different ones to try! I'll definitely make a point to return if I get the chance.

It appears to be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Admittedly, there aren't many other major attractions or destinations right in this immediate vicinity, so coming solely for the noodles might feel a tad out of the way. However, if you're exploring Taipei and doing a lot of walking (which you invariably will!), it's a great spot to consider for a delicious meal.
