Japan Puddings: Carry-On Rules & Convenience Store Picks
Don't leave Japan without your favorite puddings! Find out how to pack them safely in your luggage and get our top picks from Japanese convenience stores.

Whenever I visit Japan, one of my absolute must-buy souvenirs is pudding!
While popular brands like Jaji Pudding are becoming more widely available back home, the prices are often significantly higher than what you'd pay in Japan. That's why I always recommend stocking up on these creamy delights during your trip!
Carry-On Regulations

First things first: puddings are classified as liquids. According to international flight regulations, liquids must be in containers of 3.4 fluid ounces (100ml) or less, and the total volume allowed is 33.8 fluid ounces (1 liter).
Unfortunately, most puddings sold in Japan exceed the 3.4 fluid ounce limit per container, which means Japanese puddings are generally not allowed in your carry-on luggage.

While you might be able to find some at duty-free shops, the selection is usually limited. So, if you want to bring home those delicious puddings from city convenience stores, your best bet is to pack them in your checked luggage!
Checked Baggage

When packing puddings in your checked luggage, it's a good idea to individually wrap each one in a plastic bag. Even better, as shown in the picture, pack them in an insulated bag with ice packs to keep them cool and fresh.
You don't need an expensive cooler bag; a basic one will do the trick. If you can't bring one from home, you can easily pick one up at stores like Don Quijote or Daiso while you're in Japan.
Top Convenience Store Pudding Recommendations

Now, let's dive into some of my favorite convenience store puddings that I've tried and absolutely loved!

Jaji Pudding
This is the famous Jaji Pudding, a treat so popular that it feels like no one visits Japan without trying it!
It has a rich, deep milky flavor that isn't overly sweet or greasy, making it incredibly delicious and satisfying.

Luna Vanilla Yogurt Pudding
This one might be a bit less familiar to international travelers, but if you love both yogurt and pudding, I highly recommend giving it a try!
Full disclosure: the yogurt flavor is quite strong, so it wasn't my personal favorite since I prefer classic milk puddings. However, a friend who adores yogurt absolutely raves about it and considers it their top pick!

Kamadashi Torokeru Pudding
Meet my all-time favorite: the Kamadashi Torokeru Pudding!
Since it's an exclusive FamilyMart brand product, you won't find this gem at other convenience stores like Lawson or Seven-Eleven.
While the flavor itself is a classic, no-frills pudding taste, what sets it apart is its incredible smoothness. It lacks that typical cloying aftertaste you sometimes get with puddings and instead offers a delightful nutty richness that isn't greasy at all.

Glico Pucchin Pudding
This pudding is incredibly popular for its wonderfully bouncy and jiggly texture! You can even find mini versions of it at Don Quijote. It's a sweet, vanilla-flavored delight.

+ Don't forget to try dessert-style puddings topped with custard – they're also super popular and definitely worth a taste!
