If you're planning your first trip to Istanbul, understanding how the city is divided and where the main tourist spots are located can make all the difference. Let's break it down!

Istanbul Map Overview

Istanbul is a truly unique city, straddling two continents – Europe and Asia – with the magnificent Bosphorus Strait as its natural boundary.

The European side is further divided into the Old City and the New City. This division is marked by the Golden Horn, a horn-shaped inlet that extends inland from the Bosphorus Strait.

The Historic Old City

Before your Istanbul adventure, it’s essential to get acquainted with the Old City, also known as the Historic Peninsula.

This area is bordered by the Golden Horn to the north, the Bosphorus Strait to the east, the Sea of Marmara to the south, and the ancient Theodosian Walls to the west.

Administratively, it falls under the Fatih district. Here are some of the Old City's most iconic attractions:

Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque face each other across Sultanahmet Square, making them easy to visit together.

The Grand Bazaar and Egyptian Spice Bazaar are a bit further from Sultanahmet Square, so it’s a good idea to plan a separate itinerary for these bustling markets.

Around the Sultanahmet area, you can easily explore:

Hagia Sophia → Blue Mosque → Hippodrome → Basilica Cistern as one convenient route.

Afterward, consider visiting Topkapi Palace, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, and Gülhane Park in sequence for a full day of history and beauty.

The Grand Bazaar is located in Beyazıt, within the Fatih district, and is about a 15-minute walk (roughly 0.75 miles) from Sultanahmet Square. If you prefer public transport, take the T1 tram and get off at the Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı station.

Just a short uphill stroll past the Grand Bazaar will bring you to the Süleymaniye Mosque, which offers absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

Continue downhill from Süleymaniye, and you'll reach the Egyptian Spice Bazaar. It's a fantastic place to browse for spices, Turkish delight, and other local treasures.

Across from the Egyptian Spice Bazaar is Eminönü Pier, a major transportation hub where trams, buses, and ferries all converge.

The Balat district, famous for its colorful historic buildings, is often mentioned in Istanbul travel guides. However, it's not directly adjacent to Sultanahmet. It's best to dedicate a separate half-day or full-day itinerary to Balat rather than trying to squeeze it into your Sultanahmet sightseeing.

The Vibrant New City

After immersing yourself in Istanbul's ancient history and monuments in the Old City, let's cross over to the New City, located north of the Golden Horn.

Here, you'll discover a different side of Istanbul, where historic architecture blends seamlessly with trendy cafes and modern shops, offering a lively and contemporary atmosphere. Key attractions in the New City include:

Dolmabahçe Palace and Ortaköy are a bit removed from the main Galata and Beyoğlu areas. It's often better to plan separate visits for these two attractions to optimize your travel time.

Final Thoughts

To sum it up, Istanbul's European side is divided by the Golden Horn into the Old City (centered around Fatih) to the south and the New City (primarily Galata and Beyoğlu) to the north!
