01. Understanding Istanbul's Layout

Let's start by looking at how the vibrant city of Istanbul, Turkey, is structured! This incredible city is uniquely divided by continents and historical eras, but you can easily understand it by thinking of it in three main zones!
・ | Old City | New City | Asian Side |
Key Areas | Sultanahmet | Taksim, Galata | Kadıköy |
Pros | All major attractions within walking distance | Nightlife, well-developed transport | Plenty of affordable and quiet accommodations |
Cons | Buildings can be a bit older | Attractions are further, public transport essential | Requires crossing to the European side for sightseeing |
Out of these, I specifically chose Asilzade Hotel, located right in Istanbul's Old City.

02. Asilzade Hotel Check-in Experience

The hotel features a secure key card system, meaning you need to tap your card at the ground floor entrance to gain access. For your first visit, since you won't have a key card yet, a staff member inside will verify your identity via monitor and open the door for you!
📍 Check-in/Check-out
Check-in: After 2:00 PM
Check-out: 11:00 AM
Our travel plans involved an overnight bus, so we arrived in Istanbul bright and early. We absolutely needed to check in early or at least drop off our luggage, so we arrived at the hotel around 8:30 AM.
I honestly didn't expect an early check-in, but to my delight, we were able to check in at 8:30 AM! The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating.
03. Room Condition & Amenities

We stayed in a Standard Double Room!
The double room was perfectly compact for two people, with efficient use of space. Overall, it felt very clean and had a quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

There were power outlets on both sides of the bed, and we could use our standard adapters without needing a voltage converter. Sometimes, hotels only have one outlet per side, but having them on both sides here made charging devices super convenient for both of us!

The room also included coffee, tea, a teacup set, and a coffee maker. The overall interior felt freshly renovated and very clean!

There was a small refrigerator, which came with two complimentary bottles of water. The cooling function was a bit weak, so the water wasn't super cold, which was a minor drawback.

The bathroom was compact but featured a separate shower area – this room type did not include a bathtub. The water pressure was excellent, and we had plenty of hot water. After showering two or three times, I noticed the shower filter started to turn a bit yellowish! I've experienced this in other hotels in the area too, so I believe it's characteristic of the local water. Therefore, I highly recommend bringing your own shower filter!

Initially, four towels were provided, along with a separate foot towel, so we had plenty of towels for a comfortable stay!
04. Why the Old City is the Best Place to Stay

So, why do I recommend Asilzade Hotel in Istanbul's Old City?
It all comes down to its incredible location and accessibility!
Major attractions like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and Grand Bazaar are all within a 10 to 15-minute walk!
This means you save on energy, time, and transportation costs. Plus, if you ever feel tired during your sightseeing, it's fantastic to be able to pop back to your hotel for a quick rest!
