I'm a travel blogger specializing in Greater China 😆

When visiting Shanghai, your hotel's location can completely make or break your entire trip experience.

​

Having visited Shanghai more than a dozen times,

I've stayed in almost every major district—from Nanjing Road East and Yuyuan to Pudong and the North Bund.

​

For this trip, I stayed at the Hyatt on the Bund located in the North Bund area for the very first time.

​

To cut straight to the chase:

If you want to quietly admire the Oriental Pearl Tower

and soak up the romantic, modern vibe of Shanghai,

this hotel is an absolute perfect match.

​

The combination of the Pearl Tower and the Bund viewed right from the room was far more stunning than I had imagined.

Plus, taking a peaceful night stroll through North Bund Park made this a truly unforgettable Shanghai getaway.

Where to Stay in Shanghai: Location Tips

Shanghai hotels are generally divided into four main areas:

Nanjing Road East / Yuyuan / Pudong / North Bund

Let's break down the pros and cons of each neighborhood!

Nanjing Road East

The safest bet for first-time visitors to Shanghai.

​

It offers incredibly easy subway access,

is highly walkable to the main Bund area,

and is packed with endless dining and shopping options.

​

However, because it is the main tourist hub,

keep in mind that the atmosphere can feel a bit chaotic and crowded at times.

​

​

​

​

Yuyuan

​

If you want to experience that traditional, authentic Chinese atmosphere,

this is the area for you.

​

The night views are spectacular,

and the vibrant energy lasts late into the evening.

​

Just a heads-up: because many buildings here are older,

hotel conditions can vary significantly.

​

The Yuyuan commercial district is quite compact,

meaning you can reach great restaurants and cafes within a 5-minute walk.

Because of this convenience, it's my personal favorite area to stay in Shanghai ❣️

Pudong

A highly popular area for travelers who prioritize

epic hotel views above all else.

​

If you love luxury hotels and want front-row seats to the

Oriental Pearl Tower and the dazzling Lujiazui skyline,

you'll be extremely satisfied here.

The trade-off? Prices tend to be on the higher side,

and getting to the main historical tourist spots requires a bit more transit time.

North Bund

This was my first time staying in this area,

and I absolutely fell in love with it.

​

It's much quieter than the main tourist strip of the Bund,

offering a relaxed atmosphere where locals go for evening walks,

and best of all, you get a direct, panoramic view of the Pudong skyline right across the river.

If you love photography,

I highly recommend the North Bund 😆

Prices fluctuate quite a bit depending on the season,

but they generally average around ~$154 to ~$308 per night.

​

When booking, the most crucial thing to check is

whether you're getting a Bund View or a Pearl View.

​

Even within the same hotel,

the difference in satisfaction between a City View and a River View is massive,

so definitely double-check your view type before confirming your reservation 😆

Hyatt on the Bund: Pearl View Room Review

One of the best perks of hotels in China

= Check-in starts at 2:00 PM!

If you take a morning flight and head straight to the hotel, the timing is absolutely perfect.

​

​

​

​

​

​

​

The moment I walked into the room,

I literally said, "Wow..." out loud!!!!!

​

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows,

you get a sweeping view of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Pudong skyscrapers.

It completely captures that futuristic Shanghai vibe.

​

Especially at night,

you can watch the cruise ships gliding down the Huangpu River.

I didn't even need to leave the room to enjoy a world-class night view.

​

I originally booked a Bund View Twin Room,

but they kindly upgraded me to a Pearl View at check-in.

To be honest, the room felt a little smaller than I had anticipated,

but that was just my expectation—it was still plenty spacious enough to fully open two large suitcases!

​

​

​

Outlets!

The outlets next to the bed are 110V,

but they have USB ports built right in, so I could plug in my cable directly.

It was super convenient, and I confirmed that fast charging works perfectly!

​

Maybe the bedroom felt a bit compact because the bathroom is so huge?

I was so bummed I didn't have time for a relaxing soak in that gorgeous tub.

The premium marble finishes made the bathroom look incredibly elegant.

​

Toothbrushes were provided,

and the bath amenities are by Balmain.

However, they do have a rather strong, masculine scent, so if you are sensitive to fragrances,

I highly recommend packing your own toiletries!

​

The hair dryer had great power, and the bathroom outlets are also

110V. If you plan to use a hair straightener, don't forget to pack a universal travel adapter!

​

The minibar in the fridge is free for the first round,

which was perfect for grabbing a cold drink in the morning ❣️

My stay included breakfast.

I didn't have much of an appetite so I couldn't eat a lot,

but they had a fantastic variety of dishes that tasted great. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who loves a good hotel breakfast.

During this trip,

I ended up spending a lot more time in the hotel than I planned,

but the view alone made the stay 100% worth it.

​

Plus, the North Bund neighborhood itself

is so much quieter than the bustling Nanjing Road East.

The main Bund gets incredibly crowded at night.

​

But here, it feels more like a peaceful promenade where locals go jogging,

allowing you to experience a much more relaxed side of Shanghai.

​

​

There's also a Lawson convenience store right near the hotel, which was super handy.

​

​

My personal favorite part

was the morning view.

Many Shanghai hotels are only famous for their night views,

but the daytime scenery over the Huangpu River here is equally stunning.

​

Leaving the curtains open and just zoning out while watching the river

is one of my favorite memories from the trip.

​

​

​

Seeing so many people jogging in the morning

inspired me to go for a run one day too!

The crisp morning scenery and the peaceful atmosphere made for an unforgettable moment.

North Bund Park Photo Spots

You absolutely must visit North Bund Park,

located right near the hotel.

​

During the morning and afternoon, it looks like this...

​

And from the evening onward, it transforms into this...!

There are plenty of spots in Shanghai to take photos of the Oriental Pearl Tower,

but the North Bund offers the best views with a fraction of the crowds.

​

Walking along the river while taking in the

Pudong skyline is breathtaking.

At night, the dramatic lighting makes

your photos look like stills from a movie 😆

​

​

​

Surprisingly, there aren't many tourists here,

making it perfect for a quiet, romantic stroll.

​

Personally, I found the night views

from the North Bund to be much more

atmospheric and emotional than the main Bund.

​

​

​

Right in front of North Bund Park, there's a large shopping center

called SMP Mall.

It has everything you need for your Shanghai shopping list—cosmetics, a supermarket, and a Miniso.

It was the perfect place to do some serious damage to my wallet (?)

and head back to the hotel with my hands full 😆

If you're debating where to stay in Shanghai,

definitely consider the North Bund for your next trip!
