One of the most iconic spots near Sydney,
the wine-soaked paradise known as Hunter Valley.
It's also a famous destination for hot air ballooning and scenic helicopter rides.
Now, I’m a total wine newbie who basically just loves anything sweet... haha.
But almost every winery in Hunter Valley
walked me through everything so kindly, making it incredibly fun and easy!
Plus, buying directly from the cellar doors
means you get to snap up bottles at much sweeter prices.
Yes, these are indeed wines I bought with my own hard-earned cash!
A true heaven for wine lovers, Hunter Valley
is home to famous wineries like Tulloch, Audrey Wilkinson, Peterson House, Brokenwood, McGuigan, and Hunter's Dream.
There are so many diverse estates to explore here.
Each winery boasts a wide-ranging lineup, from Semillon and Shiraz to Pinot Noir, Malbec, sparkling wines, and dessert wines.
✔ Hunter Valley wineries generally operate daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
✔ Grape season is from January to March; in the winter months of June to August, the harvest is over, leaving bare-branch views
✔ Because they are direct-sales cellar doors, prices are much cheaper than retail
✔ Duty-free allowance upon entering Korea is up to 2 bottles duty-free
So, when planning a trip to Hunter Valley,
you might find yourself stressing over which places will match your taste, how to reserve,

Now, here is my incredibly personal, honest tasting review
of the 7 wineries I visited. Let's get started!
1. McGUIGAN WINES
Opening Hours: Daily 10 AM to 5 PM
The very first stop on my list was
one of Australia's top 10 wineries,
the famous McGuigan Wines in Hunter Valley.
It was located within an outlet-style complex.
Inside, there was plenty of extra seating, seemingly set up for larger tour groups.
The cute mascot of the shop next door...
Since it was our first stop, I noticed that the wine tasting was quite affordable,
and because they host so many tourists, the staff was extremely professional and experienced.
It did feel slightly commercialized, but in a very smooth way!
The standard wine tasting option is $10 per person,
and their chocolate pairing courses are also quite budget-friendly compared to other wineries.
We opted for the Premium Tasting Course ($20).
From sweet white wines to robust, bold red wines,
each pour came with a simple, friendly explanation.
It was a solid, enjoyable, and very approachable tasting experience.
With its clean, modern facilities as a large-scale estate
and highly reasonable pricing as major pluses,
we ended up purchasing a few of our favorite bottles and absolutely loved drinking them!

2. TULLOCH
Opening Hours: Daily 10 AM to 5 PM
Tulloch is another legendary name with a rich history,
having been established all the way back in 1895.
We arrived without a reservation about an hour before closing,
but they welcomed us so warmly. It was wonderful!
Truly professional service!
While the first floor doesn't have a massive amount of seating,
there is plenty of space downstairs in the cellar level,
and they host a great variety of tasting programs.
From chocolate pairings and local cheese pairings
to full-on dining pairing courses,
there are so many amazing options to choose from.
The standard wine tasting option (wine only) is $12 per person.
We went with the Wine Tasting paired with Local Handmade Chocolates ($35)!
Placed neatly over the tasting guide,
two white wines, two red wines, and one rosé wine
come perfectly paired with five different handmade chocolates.
Each wine has a detailed description sheet,
which was so helpful because before the spoken explanations could slip my mind,
I could easily refer back to the notes while tasting.
Flavors like raspberry, coffee, and white macadamia—
all five chocolate flavors
were meticulously crafted to harmonize with each specific wine.
They perfectly balanced the bitterness or
beautifully enhanced the smooth notes of each pour.
These are local artisan chocolates by the brand 'DONARCH',
and yes, you can purchase the chocolates separately if you fall in love with them!
Our host at Tulloch Wines felt like a true, seasoned expert...
They also have a dedicated kids' tasting menu here,
so you'll see families enjoying the experience together.
Right in front of the cellar door is a sprawling vineyard,
and we spotted wild kangaroos hopping around like neighborhood stray cats...!
They were just casually wandering back and forth right in front of us.
We actually saw way more kangaroos here than in 'Kangaroo Valley' (which we visited later near Sydney)!
We even joked that Hunter Valley and Kangaroo Valley should swap names...

3. AUDREY WILKINSON
Opening Hours: Daily 10 AM to 5 PM
Established in 1866, this place is steeped in rich history.
Ranked as one of the top 10 wineries in the country,
Audrey Wilkinson Winery is perched gently on a hill,
offering an absolutely breathtaking, panoramic view.
There are so many gorgeous photo spots scattered around,
I can only imagine how stunning it must look during harvest season!
With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options,
Audrey Wilkinson has a spot for everyone.
Offering everything from standard tastings and premium wine flights to brunch packages,
they cater to all kinds of visitors—
whether you're looking for a casual, budget-friendly sip or a deep-dive connoisseur experience.
Everyone is bound to leave happy!
I opted for a local cheese pairing course
that isn't even listed on their website,
and I got to sample a whopping 7 glasses in total!
Every single cheese was absolutely divine,
and with each glass, they gave a detailed explanation of the wine.
I loved that they offered such a wide variety,
ranging from bone-dry to delightfully sweet!
I got so excited right from the start that I ended up buying several bottles...
An eco-friendly estate where ducks freely wander around...
Since it's nestled in the mountains, it might be a bit tricky to visit without a tour,
but the views are stunning and the tasting flights are so diverse.
I highly recommend visiting, especially when the vines are heavy with grapes!

4. BROKENWOOD
Opening Hours: Weekdays 11 AM to 5 PM, Weekends 10 AM to 5 PM
Last order for wine tastings is at 4 PM
Next up is Brokenwood, which won 'Winery of the Year' at the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion Awards,
'Cellar Door of the Year' at the 2025 Hunter Valley Legends Awards,
and numerous other accolades!
When it comes to the most famous wineries in the Hunter Valley,
you absolutely cannot leave out Brokenwood.
Even my hotel room had
Brokenwood wine stocked in the minibar, so I made sure to enjoy it.
It feels like almost everywhere here is ranked in the top 10 wineries...
They also have an excellent dining menu,
so many people visit just for a meal.
But we arrived a bit late, so we could only do the wine tasting.
(Even for tastings, last call is at 4:00 PM!)
Along with their standard tastings
and food-pairing experiences,
they offer a joint journey with Tyrrell's & Audrey Wilkinson wineries,
as well as private tours where you can stroll through the vineyards.
The standard wine tasting option (wine only)
is around $25 per person,
and you can choose between a white wine or red wine flight.
You get a total of 3 pours served alongside a tasting guide.
They showcase wines from various price points,
and it was fascinating to taste how the flavors evolve depending on the aging process.
The outdoor seating must be incredible on a clear day.
It looked like they open up the inner seating area when large tour groups arrive.
As expected of such a famous spot, the service was seamless.
Since they showcase wines across a wide range of price points,
this is a must-visit if you want to taste multi-award-winning wines.

5. PETERSON HOUSE
Opening Hours: 9 AM to 5 PM
Peterson House Hunter Valley Wineries Pokolbin
Unlike other wineries, Peterson House is unique because
they specialize exclusively in sparkling wines,
which is exactly why I had to check it out!
Boasting vast, beautiful grounds,
they also operate a wedding venue
and restaurant—welcome to Peterson House!
Bubbly sparkling wine-inspired LED lights.
The dining and tasting areas seemed to flow seamlessly into one another.
It was pouring down rain, so it looks a bit gloomy, but
we still got a lovely view of the vineyards, a pond, and some cute ducks!
I can definitely see why people choose to get married here on a sunny day.
They offer a standard tasting, premium tasting, gelato pairing course,
and even kids' options, making it a great stop for families.
We went with the Premium Wine Tasting Course for $20 per person!
I used to think most sparkling wines were just sweet,
but how wrong I was!
Depending on the fizz level, sweetness, and whether it’s red or white,
the flavors, aromas, and body
vary so much. It was incredibly fascinating!
With over 30 different sparkling varieties, from sparkling Shiraz to Moscato and rosé,
there's so much to choose from. We ended up buying
a bottle of their dessert wine, which was absolutely delicious.
Just outside Peterson House,
there's a lovely chocolate shop you can explore.

With so many pretty and unique handmade candies and chocolates,
it's the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs.

6. Hunter's Dream
Hours: Temporarily Closed
We visited Hunter's Dream Winery
just before heading back on our last day. While looking for wineries nearby,
we picked this one simply because the exterior looked so gorgeous.
(Currently operating online store only)
They sell olive oil alongside their wines,
and when the cellar door was open, it also doubled as a wedding venue.
Since they host private events here,
the garden in front is beautifully landscaped,
and a few quiet tables were scattered around
the stunning building for a very relaxed vibe.
Since we were the only ones there during our visit,
we had a wonderfully leisurely tasting while chatting with the staff.
After tasting their red, white, sparkling, and rosé options,
we took home some of their dessert wine.
They are currently temporarily closed, with plans to reopen this December.

7. 4 Pines Beer Brewing at the Farm
Opening Hours: Daily 7:30 AM - 8:00 PM
4 Pines is actually a craft beer brewery and pub.
A craft beer spot is actually quite rare and precious in wine country...!
But since they also serve wine, I just had to sneak them onto this list.
While most wineries pack up and close by 5:00 PM,
4 Pines is a pub, making it one of the few places open late into the evening...
It seems like a very popular dining spot for tour groups as well.
I ended up wrapping up my very first night here with some great food and wine.
It sits on a massive property with wide-open views of a peaceful pond.
They have plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors.
Once night falls, the surrounding area gets pitch black and you lose the view,
so I highly recommend getting here before sunset!
They serve a fantastic variety of craft beers, from pale ales to lagers and stouts,
and also offer cocktails and wine.
The kitchen has designated hours
for their lunch and dinner menus.
4 Pines is a craft beer brand you'll spot quite often in major Australian cities,
so visiting their actual brewery in person was such a cool experience!
They have an amazing lineup of their own brews fresh on tap.
We enjoyed a wonderful outdoor dinner of fries and lamb steak.
Every dish was delicious, the portions were generous,
and they poured our wine glasses right to the brim—such generous Aussie hospitality...!
If you arrive late in Hunter Valley and are craving
good food, fine wine, and fresh craft beer all at once,
I highly recommend 4 Pines Brewing!

Next time, I'd love to visit
between January and March when the grapes are fully on the vines.
Since I visited on a weekday with a local friend,
we were able to get into most places without any advance reservations.
However, we didn't get in-depth explanations
or join official winery tours,
focusing more on quick tastings before making our purchases.
Also, hitting 7 different wineries in just two days (...) was pretty intense,
so visiting 2 to 3 spots a day is the absolute sweet spot.
That's why booking a curated winery tour is honestly
the easiest and most relaxing way to explore!

The opening hours of wineries in the Hunter Valley are generally from 10 AM to 5 PM daily. We highly recommend visiting between January and March, which is the peak season when the vines are full of grapes.
Unlike other places, Peterson House specializes exclusively in sparkling wine. They have a lineup of over 30 varieties, including Sparkling Shiraz and Moscato, and you can enjoy a premium tasting course for $20 per person.
The course is available for $35 per person. It includes two glasses of white wine, two glasses of red wine, and one glass of rosé, paired with five local handmade chocolates that perfectly complement each wine.
You can visit 4 Pines, a craft beer brewery pub. It is open daily from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM, allowing you to enjoy a meal with craft beer and wine even later in the day.
