If you can only visit **one place**, then
**I highly recommend the Hue Imperial City.**
Today, I'll walk you through everything from how to get to the Hue Imperial City,
to tips for buying tickets and making the most of your visit.

The **Hue Imperial City served as the stronghold of Vietnam's last dynasty,**
**the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945).**
It holds the distinction of being Vietnam's first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
This magnificent site was modeled after China's Forbidden City.
While it suffered damage during Vietnam's tumultuous modern history, extensive restoration efforts have recently been bringing back the ancient dynasty's splendor.
2. How to Get to Hue Imperial City
1) Starting from Da Nang
You primarily have three options: bus, train, or private car rental.

From Da Nang to Hue,
the bus or train journey takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
For a **day trip from Da Nang to Hue,**
**a private car rental is the most convenient option.**
If you add up the round-trip costs to Da Nang plus Grab fares within the city,
it ends up being quite similar to renting a car.

2) Getting to Hue from Hoi An
You can travel by bus.
The bus ticket costs approximately 200,000 VND
and the journey takes about 3 hours.

Within Hue city, it takes about 5 minutes by Grab.

It's a bit of a shame that the connection can sometimes be unstable,
but since it's free, definitely check this one out too!
5. Renting a Bicycle
📌How to Rent a Bicycle at Hue Imperial City
Choose your desired rental time,
and pay the fee in cash.
If you exceed your initial rental time,
you can just pay the extra amount when you return it.
(I was about 5 minutes late, but they were understanding! Haha.)

🌸Recommended Rental Time: 90 minutes
Once your entrance ticket is checked and you're inside,
you can rent a bicycle right away.
The Hue Imperial City is incredibly vast,
so it takes more than half a day to explore it properly.
That's why I recommend renting a bicycle if you want to explore the outer areas.
It's an electric bicycle, so it's not too strenuous.
I paid for 90 minutes,
and I started by exploring the outer perimeter, then visited a cafe by the northern wall,
returned the bike, and finally explored Ngọ Môn and Điện Thái Hòa.
6. Exploring Hue Imperial City
A brief guide to the main spots in Hue Imperial City
Ngọ Môn
Ngọ Môn
This is the main gate of the Imperial City.
Only the emperor was allowed to use the central gate.
It was designed so that the sun would align with the center of the gate at noon.

This was the main hall where official ceremonies like coronations and receptions for foreign envoys took place.
The golden dragon pillars and the throne inside
showcase the majesty of the imperial power of that era.
Thai Binh Pavilion
Thai Binh Pavilion
This was the royal library and pavilion where the emperor would read books or relax.
Built during the reign of Emperor Khải Định in 1921,
its splendid ceramic mosaic decorations on the roof and walls
are incredibly beautiful and make it famous as a photo spot.
The pavilion is surrounded by peaceful ponds and gardens,
creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
Kiến Trung Palace
Kiến Trung Palace
This was the residence of Bảo Đại, the last emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty,
and Empress Nam Phương.
This stunning building boasts an exotic splendor,
a unique blend of French, Italian, and Vietnamese styles,
truly setting it apart from the other magnificent structures within the Royal Palace.
Though completely devastated during the war,
after five years of meticulous historical research and reconstruction,
it finally reopened fully to the public in February 2024,
making it one of the absolute must-visit, hottest spots right now.
Hoa Binh Gate

This is the majestic north gate of the Hue Royal Palace.
It was built during the French colonial era.
It served as a vital thoroughfare for palace servants and
even as a secret passage for the emperor when leaving the palace.
Today, this historic gate houses a charming cafe.
Head up to the second floor and you'll be treated to a fantastic panoramic view of the Hue Royal Palace,
a perfect spot to relax and cool down.
Exploring the Hue Royal Palace can be quite a trek, as there's not much shade
and a lot of walking involved, so it can be surprisingly tiring.
That's why I highly recommend taking a little break here;
the ambiance is truly delightful.
I personally loved being able to soak in the serene and ancient atmosphere of the Hue Royal Palace.
It truly is the heart of Hue, embodying the city's rich identity.
If you're visiting Hue for the first time,
I'd definitely suggest centering your itinerary around the magnificent Royal Palace.
For a day trip from Da Nang to Hue Imperial City, renting a private car is the most convenient option. The cost is approximately ~$31, which is comparable to the combined round-trip Grab fare from Da Nang and Grab fares within Hue city.
A Hue Imperial City combo ticket for three sites (Imperial City plus two chosen from Tu Duc, Khai Dinh, or Minh Mang) costs 420,000 VND. A ticket covering the Imperial City and all three tombs (Khai Dinh, Tu Duc, and Minh Mang) costs 530,000 VND, and this ticket is valid for two days.
Hue Imperial City is very extensive, so renting a bicycle is recommended to explore its outer areas. A 90-minute rental is recommended at 100,000 VND. 60 minutes costs 70,000 VND, 120 minutes costs 130,000 VND, and 180 minutes costs 180,000 VND.
The 'Kien Trung Palace' within Hue Imperial City is the hottest spot, fully opened to the public in February 2024. This was the residence of the last king and queen of the Nguyen Dynasty, boasting splendid architecture that blends French, Italian, and Vietnamese styles.
