When planning a trip to Shanghai, deciding where to base yourself is one of the most important decisions. If you want to make sightseeing and navigating the city as seamless as possible, staying right in the heart of Nanjing East Road is definitely the way to go.
After weighing all our options, we chose Hotel Chalet Shanghai (also known as Guxiang Hotel Shanghai). Here is our honest review of the room conditions, amenities, and why this is the perfect base for your Shanghai adventures! 👍

1. The Perfect Location: Nanjing East Road

Nanjing East Road is Shanghai's premier shopping street and the ultimate tourist hub. Staying here means you are just minutes away from major landmarks like The Bund, People's Square, the Oriental Pearl Tower, and Yu Garden.
The street is lined with mega-malls, local eateries, and trendy shops, making it our top neighborhood recommendation for first-time visitors.
📍 Hotel Chalet Shanghai (Guoxiang Hotel Shanghai)
595 Jiujiang Rd, Huangpu, Shanghai, China 200001
Hotel Chalet Shanghai puts you right in the center of the action. You'll find convenience stores, subway stations, the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store, and the New World City Mall just steps away. Plus, the famous local restaurant Dongbeirenjia is only a 5-minute walk from the lobby!
2. Hotel Chalet Shanghai Perks & Rates

The hotel features a 24-hour front desk, which is incredibly convenient if you are arriving on a late-night flight. The check-in process was seamless and welcoming.

Right next to the reception, they keep a fridge stocked with large and small bottles of water that guests can grab for free anytime. We loved taking the small bottles on our daily walking tours and keeping the larger ones in our room for the evening!

They also offer complimentary candies at the desk, including the iconic White Rabbit creamy candy—a famous Shanghai souvenir. It was great to try them before buying some to take home!
Rates at Hotel Chalet Shanghai typically range from ~$58 to ~$96 per night, making it an incredible value for the location. You can easily book your stay directly through Trip.com.

3. Room Tour & Smart Comforts

The rooms here are surprisingly spacious compared to standard city hotels. We booked a twin room, which gave my friend and me plenty of space to stretch out and unpack comfortably.

Both beds have convenient power outlets on the bedside tables, so there was no fighting over who gets to charge their phone at night.
While there is an in-room tablet and phone for contacting reception, communicating in a foreign language can sometimes feel intimidating. 😓
Fortunately, Hotel Chalet Shanghai offers customer service via WeChat! It was incredibly easy to text them in English to request extra towels or water bottles, and they responded almost instantly.

The room comes equipped with a kettle, cups, tea, and coffee. There is also a mini-fridge where we kept our local craft beers and fresh fruit cold for late-night snacks.
Another major highlight was the smart room control system. You can control all the lights and the automatic curtains right from your bed. Opening the curtains with a single button to let the morning sun in was the ultimate way to wake up! 👍

The in-room sofa was plush and comfortable—perfect for relaxing after walking miles through the city streets.

The closet area includes hangers, a full-length mirror, drawers, and high-quality, comfortable slippers that made us feel right at home.

The bathroom features a split layout with the shower stall, toilet, and vanity separated. While the open design without a heavy main door might surprise you at first, it was highly functional and didn't cause any inconvenience.

Standard amenities like shampoo, body wash, hand soap, toothbrushes, and a shower cap are provided. Note that hair conditioner and cotton swabs aren't included, so make sure to pack your own if you need them!

Cleanliness is always a dealbreaker for us, and we were thrilled to find the bathroom completely spotless and dust-free. If you value hygiene and a great location, this Nanjing East Road gem is a no-brainer!
4. Hotel Amenities & Shared Facilities

The reception floor features a beautiful, spacious lounge area with plenty of seating and dedicated workspaces for laptops. It's the perfect spot to relax before check-in or to unwind with a cup of coffee after checking out before heading to the airport.

They offer unlimited free coffee and tea in the lounge. We made it a daily ritual to grab a fresh espresso every morning before hitting the streets of Shanghai! ☕

There's also a gorgeous outdoor patio that feels like a trendy neighborhood cafe. It's a wonderful spot to enjoy the fresh breeze and a quiet moment in the middle of a bustling metropolis.

For long-term travelers, the hotel features a fully-equipped self-service laundry room and a compact fitness center to keep up with your workout routine.

As a sweet bonus, if you leave a review on Trip.com during checkout, the front desk gifts you a classic Shanghai Beauty Cream! It’s a wonderful local souvenir and a lovely parting gesture.
With its unbeatable location, pristine rooms, and thoughtful amenities, Hotel Chalet Shanghai exceeded all our expectations. We would absolutely stay here again on our next trip to China! 😙
If you are planning your 2026 Shanghai getaway, we highly recommend checking out this property!
