Hong Kong is a city bustling with travelers throughout all four seasons, isn't it?
But there are definitely better times to visit!
I'll also show you what to wear according to the weather each season.
Plus, I'll share crucial typhoon warning precautions you absolutely need to know before your Hong Kong trip.
1. Hong Kong Weather: Monthly Average Temperatures
Hong Kong boasts a subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters.
Hong Kong Weather in January
The photo above, which looks so clear and bright, showcases Hong Kong's January weather.
You can spot people wearing a variety of clothes, from hoodies and light padded jackets to jumpers.
The average temperature typically ranges from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
Sometimes it can even feel as chilly as late autumn in Korea!
In Hong Kong, temperatures rarely drop below freezing, even in winter.
However, when it's windy, the 'feels like' temperature can be significantly lower.
As January progresses, you'll see fewer coats and more hoodies.

Hong Kong Weather in February
The average temperature hovers around 14 to 18 degrees Celsius.
Mornings and evenings can be a bit crisp, but you'll enjoy refreshing weather during the day.
This is truly the time when, looking at photos, you simply can't tell what the weather is like!
You might see short-sleeved shirts, turtlenecks, button-ups, and even coats all in one picture.
Hong Kong Weather in March
As spring begins, it's a wonderful time to travel!
The average temperature gradually warms up, ranging from about 17 to 21 degrees Celsius.
Especially at lunchtime, it can feel so warm in the sun that you might wonder if summer has arrived.
For places like Hong Kong Disneyland or other popular, crowded
major tourist attractions, the period from October to exactly March seems to be the best time to visit.
After March, both the temperature and humidity climb, making sightseeing quite intense.
Hong Kong Weather: April to June
Temperatures rise from the mid-20s to nearly 30 degrees Celsius, and humidity increases.
If you're planning on hiking during your Hong Kong trip,
this period is your last window of opportunity.
Hong Kong Weather: July to September
The photos depict a scorching summer without a single cloud in the sky —
a hot and humid summer with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.
But surprisingly, this period is also typhoon season!
I'll cover typhoon-related precautions a bit further down.
So, if possible, I recommend visiting other destinations instead of Hong Kong during this time.
Hong Kong Weather: October to December
It's wonderful weather to travel to Hong Kong again!
The weather turns cool and dry, attracting many autumn travelers.
With occasional refreshing breezes, it's personally my absolute favorite time to visit.
With so many people eager to visit Hong Kong,
the airport is usually bustling with travelers during this period.
2. Hong Kong Typhoon Warnings & Important Precautions
Hong Kong is susceptible to typhoons from summer through early autumn.
So, if you're planning a trip to Hong Kong between July and October, definitely keep an eye out for typhoons.
Typhoon warnings are categorized as T1, T3, T8, and T10.
The higher the number, the greater the level of danger.
T1, T3 | A warning issued when a typhoon is still far off. Daily life is largely unaffected. |
T8 or higher | Issued when a strong typhoon is approaching, all tourist attractions, restaurants, and businesses must close until the warning is lifted. |
If you visit Hong Kong when a T8 warning is issued, it can be quite disappointing.
That's because most public transportation, tourist attractions, and shops will be closed.
You'll need to constantly check your Hong Kong weather forecast app.
Even businesses switch to remote work, and people generally avoid going out.
Businesses typically resume operations only two hours after a typhoon warning is lifted.
I always make sure to get travel insurance,
but I know many people don't, right?
Even if you usually skip it, if you're traveling to Hong Kong between July and October, it's absolutely crucial to get travel insurance.

Hong Kong's weather can change quickly!
You absolutely must check real-time Hong Kong weather forecast information.
I highly recommend the Hong Kong Observatory app, which anyone can install for free!
It's the official app from the Hong Kong Observatory!
What's more, you can also check crucial information about typhoon warnings and their lifting through the app!

4. When is the Absolute Best Time to Visit Hong Kong for Great Weather?
So, when exactly is the perfect time to experience Hong Kong's best travel weather?
The best times to travel to Hong Kong are during autumn (October-December) and
late winter to early spring (February-March).
Late January ~ March | Mild and pleasant weather, perfect for leisurely strolls. Even crowded tourist spots feel comfortable, with no high discomfort index. |
October ~ Early December | Cool and dry weather. Comparable to beautiful autumn days in many regions. Ideal for sightseeing and shopping. It starts to get colder from mid-December. |
July ~ September | Very hot and humid. All tourist attractions may close, and there's a high possibility of typhoons, so it's best to avoid this period. |
5. What to Wear: Hong Kong Weather by Season
Now, let's dive into what to wear for each type of Hong Kong weather!
These photos are from my own Hong Kong trips, taken while I was out clothes shopping – a perfect way to show you what works!
I personally tried on outfits suitable for each season as I explored.
My go-to shopping spot was always Causeway Bay Fashion Walk.
If you're planning to use public transport to get around Causeway Bay, make sure to get an Octopus Card!
It's similar to a T-Money card in Korea, and it's absolutely essential for bus travel (and much more!).

What to Wear in Hong Kong in January
It gets chilly in the mornings and evenings,
so for Hong Kong's January weather, you'll definitely need a light padded jacket or jumper
The wind at night can make it feel even colder and uncomfortable.
If you tend to get cold easily, a slightly thicker outer layer would be good.
Of course, a long padded coat like you might wear in colder regions isn't needed.
A coat suitable for late autumn is usually enough.
Even in January, you'll still see people wearing padded vests or light padded jackets in restaurants.
It's still the tail end of winter, so don't let your guard down!
What to Wear for Hong Kong's February Weather?
From February onwards, the weather starts to warm up, so a cardigan or a jacket should be sufficient.
We recommend a cardigan with a bit of thickness, like those in the pictures.
What to Wear for Hong Kong's March Weather
Traveling to Hong Kong in the first half of the year
March is the sweet spot, the last month of truly ideal weather for traveling in the first half of the year.
This is when you can wear your prettiest outfits, whatever you desire!
The weather is lovely, it doesn't rain much, and the humidity is just right.
What to Wear for Hong Kong Weather: April ~ June
We recommend a short-sleeved t-shirt paired with a light cardigan.
It rains frequently, so be sure to bring an umbrella.
It's also a good idea to wear cool tops with long pants.
Recommended Outfits for July ~ September
We recommend wearing the coolest possible outfits, such as sleeveless tops and t-shirts.
You'll even see many people walking around in just athletic wear during this time.
Be sure to wear thin, breathable short-sleeved shirts and shorts.
The sun is strong, so sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are absolute essentials.

so check it before you head out.
What to Wear for Hong Kong: October ~ December
A light knit or jacket is suitable.
When it's chilly in the mornings and evenings,
adding a scarf is a good idea.
However, it can surprisingly get warm during the day.
It's best to wear several layers that you can remove, like a cardigan over a thin long-sleeved t-shirt.
In October, you can go without an outer layer,
and just wear a knit.
In November and December, an outer layer is necessary.
Until November, a tweed jacket set would also be suitable.
As December and Christmas approach, it's time to start wearing full-on coats.
From this point on, at a minimum, a hoodie or a light padded jacket
and you'll start seeing people in short padded jackets.

But surprisingly, there are sometimes warm days even in December!
I went to Ocean Park in December, and
the weather that day was exceptionally good – I even wore a 3/4 sleeve cardigan.
It felt more like October!

Hong Kong offers a unique charm in every season.
Especially from late January to March, it feels like spring,
making it the perfect time to visit with mild and pleasant weather.
