Hong Kong Travel: A List of Must-Try Restaurants

As the scorching summer heat gradually retreats,
are you planning an autumn trip to Hong Kong?
Hong Kong cuisine often gets mixed reviews,
and even famous eateries might not always suit everyone's palate.
Today, I'll be introducing 8 restaurants
that my family of four and I absolutely loved on our trip,
carefully selected from all the places we visited.
1. New Hing Fat Dim Sum (新興發點心)

Opening Hours | 07:00~18:00 |
Closed On | Tuesdays |
Location | Tak May House, Des Voeux Rd W, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong 7-minute walk from Sai Ying Pun Station |
Special Features | Local, budget-friendly dim sum spot Cash payment only |
Our first recommendation is New Hing Fat Dim Sum,
a restaurant located near Sai Ying Pun Station.
Dim sum is an absolute must-try when you visit Hong Kong,
and since this is a local spot, the prices are quite affordable.
It's perfect for enjoying all the dim sum your heart desires without breaking the bank!

We ordered a variety of dishes,
and the first to arrive were the radish cake and crispy cheung fun.
While the radish cake was quite standard,
the crispy cheung fun was absolutely delicious, with crispy fried bits
inside the chewy and tender rice noodle rolls.

Besides those, the har gow (shrimp dumplings) were deliciously plump,
and the eggplant dim sum was surprisingly good, especially with the sauce.

The two dishes we found a bit ambiguous were the lotus leaf rice and the meat soy sauce rice.
The lotus leaf rice had a very strong lotus leaf aroma that made it difficult to eat for us,
and the meat soy sauce rice also had a unique smell that wasn't quite to our liking.
However, if you stick to dim sum, you can enjoy a very satisfying meal at an affordable price,
which is why I'd highly recommend this spot.
Just a heads-up, there's usually a wait during peak meal times,
so I recommend visiting during off-peak hours.
(Also, the staff here are incredibly friendly!)
2. Catherine Bakery (Catherine Bakery)

Opening Hours | 08:00~20:30 |
Closed On | None |
Location | G/F, 88 Queen's Road West, Sai Wan, Hong Kong 5-minute walk from Sheung Wan Station |
Special Features | Affordable local bakery (Famous for pineapple buns) |
Our second must-visit spot is Catherine Bakery,
a charming local bakery near Sheung Wan Station.
Being a local favorite, it offers delicious baked goods at incredibly affordable prices.

Stepping inside, you're greeted with a warm, brown-toned atmosphere,
reminiscent of the neighborhood bakeries from our childhood.
It might be small, but it boasts dozens of different bread varieties!

Of course, we had to try
the classic Hong Kong-style egg tarts and pineapple buns.
The egg tarts were 6 HKD, and the pineapple buns were 8 HKD,
boasting incredible value for money.

But despite the low prices, the taste was absolutely superb!
The egg tarts were deliciously sweet,
and in my opinion, they easily stood their ground against those from more famous establishments.
The pineapple bun had a delightful crispy crust and a soft interior,
It was baked so thinly, like a streusel-like bread, and it was absolutely delicious!
Most travelers heading to Hong Kong tend to stay in Sheung Wan, so if you're in the neighborhood,
it's definitely worth stopping by for a taste!
3. Keun Kee Wonton Noodle (쿤키완탕면)

Opening Hours | Mon-Sat 09:30~22:00 Sun 09:30~19:30 |
Closed | None |
Location | Greenland Building, 303 Queen's Road Central, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong 7-minute walk from Sheung Wan Station |
Special Notes | Affordable local wonton noodles (famous for shrimp wonton noodles) Cash and Octopus card only |
Our third must-visit eatery is Keun Kee Wonton Noodle.
It's near Sheung Wan Station and Catherine Bakery, which I introduced earlier,
making it perfect to visit together.
Here too, you can feel the authentic local vibe right from the exterior.

The must-try dish for many is
the Shrimp Wonton Noodle.
You can choose between egg noodles and rice vermicelli,
and the price is only 28 HKD per bowl.

Each bowl of wonton noodles comes with four shrimp wontons,
and they're surprisingly large.
The moment you bite into one, you'll experience a bouncy texture,
the savory aroma of sesame oil, and the umami of shrimp.
The wontons were truly delicious.
The soup has a shrimp-based flavor, which I think most people
would enjoy, so it won't be much of a hit or miss for many.
However, both the egg noodles and rice vermicelli were a bit underwhelming for me.

What we ordered additionally was fish skin dumplings,
and they actually taste like fish skin.
This is a dish that will really divide opinions.
For those curious about local Hong Kong wonton noodles,
I highly recommend giving it a try,
but I'd generally stick to ordering only the shrimp wonton noodles.
4. Wah Lok Cafe (華樂冰室)

Opening Hours | Mon-Fri 07:00~16:00 Sat 07:00~16:30 Sun 07:00~17:00 |
Closed | None |
Location | 16號 Tung St, Central, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong 10-minute walk from Sheung Wan Station |
Special Notes | A must-visit for tourists to experience authentic local Cha Chaan Teng vibes Cash and Octopus card only |
Our fourth must-try spot is Wah Lok Cafe, a well-known establishment.
It's a great place to experience Hong Kong's Cha Chaan Teng culture,
and you'll often see long queues starting from the morning.

Tomato ramen, French toast, and pineapple buns are popular here,
but the pineapple buns were sold out that day,
so we tried the Wah Lok Omelette instead.
The French toast was crispy yet moist,
and so sweetly delicious that I couldn't stop eating it.
The tomato ramen consisted of thin noodles in a not-too-rich tomato soup.
It wasn't overly sour,
and surprisingly, the flavors blended really well.
Personally, for the omelette, the egg and the filling felt a bit separate,
so it didn't quite hit the mark for me.

The coffee we ordered as a drink was truly sweet,
tasting like instant coffee mix, giving a real sugar rush.
The milk tea, however, was not sweet.
The milk tea might be a hit or miss for some.

Wah Lok Cafe isn't overly expensive,
and it's a fantastic spot to truly soak in the local Cha Chaan Teng atmosphere.
So if you're nearby, definitely give it a visit!
5. Ho Ho Kitchen (見見面)

Opening Hours | 11:00~24:00 |
Closed | None |
Location | 80號 Tak Ku Ling Rd, Kowloon City, Kowloon, Hong Kong 5-minute walk from Kowloon Walled City Park |
Special Notes | Its spicy Sichuan dishes are perfect for balancing out rich Hong Kong cuisine. |
Our fifth must-visit spot is Ho Ho Kitchen, an excellent eatery to stop by on your way to Kowloon Walled City Park,
located in the former Kowloon Walled City area.
While Hong Kong food can generally be quite rich and a bit heavy,
this restaurant specializes in Sichuan cuisine,
perfect for cutting through that richness with its amazing flavors!

We ordered three dishes in total:
Sweet and Sour Pork, stir-fried eggplant, and stir-fried pork with broccoli.
First off, everything had a subtle kick of spice
that really whet our appetites.
(You can even order it spicier!)

These two dishes (eggplant and pork with broccoli) had a delicious, savory, and umami-rich
oil flavor that coated them perfectly – they were so good that the rice just disappeared!
It had been a while since I found such fantastic side dishes for rice in Hong Kong,
I even ordered an extra bowl of white rice!

The Sweet and Sour Pork was also quite tasty; even though the sauce was sweet,
there was a subtle hint of spice that made it really enjoyable.
If you're visiting the Kowloon Walled City area and craving some spicy food,
you absolutely have to check this place out!
6. Cheong Hing Kee (祥興記上海生煎包)

Opening Hours | 09:00~21:00 |
Closed | None |
Location | 48 Lock Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong 1-minute walk from Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit A1 |
Special Notes | A continuously featured Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant Expect a wait of around 20-30 minutes |
Our sixth culinary gem is Cheong Hing Kee in Tsim Sha Tsui,
a famous spot adored by both locals and tourists.
It's been featured in the Michelin Bib Gourmand for a long time,
which means there's almost always a 20-30 minute wait.

They offer a variety of buns, and the prices are a bit on the higher side,
ranging from about ~$1 to ~$4 per piece.

I ordered a set with two of their Signature Buns and two Black Truffle Buns.
The unique thing about them was how they were cooked: soft and moist on top,
and perfectly crispy and golden on the bottom.

The buns were indeed delicious, bursting with juicy broth
and generously filled with meat.
However, I wouldn't say it's a must-try destination worthy of a 20-30 minute wait at that price point.
It's located almost right in front of Tsim Sha Tsui Station, so I'd only recommend trying it
if you happen to pass by and the wait time is estimated to be under 5 minutes.
7. Sum Man Yee Congee (心滿意粥)

Opening Hours | 07:00~23:15 |
Closed | None |
Location | Hong Kong Island, Kennedy Town, Belcher's St, 114號, Luen Yau Apartments, 地下A鋪 3-minute walk from Kennedy Town Station |
Special Notes | A great restaurant for breakfast near Kennedy Town |
Our seventh pick is Sum Man Yee Congee, an excellent spot for breakfast
in the Kennedy Town area.
They serve classic Chinese-style breakfast dishes, and since it's a local favorite,
the atmosphere is wonderfully authentic.

As the name suggests, they have a wide variety of congee dishes, and
I tried the beef congee.
It was mild and comforting, and I was happy to find plenty of tender beef in it!

Next up was the shrimp cheung fun; its bouncy yet smooth texture was
like eating a delicate rice noodle roll, and it was quite delicious too.

Personally, the You Tiao and Dou Jiang
at this place were absolutely perfect for my taste buds.
Since the Dou Jiang already has a sweetness to it, dipping the You Tiao
deeply into it creates a sweet and savory delight that's truly delicious.
For those heading to Kennedy Town for their morning itinerary,
this is a fantastic spot to enjoy a simple breakfast!
8. Chicken Egg Boy

Operating Hours | 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM |
Closed On | Wednesdays |
Location | Shop 2, G/F, Nam Wo Hong Building, 148 Wing Lok St, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong 5-minute walk from Sheung Wan Station |
Special Notes | A popular Hong Kong waffle spot frequently visited by locals |
The eighth and final must-visit eatery is Chicken Egg Boy,
a Hong Kong waffle spot much more famous among locals.

They bake a pineapple bun right on top of the Hong Kong waffles
we all know and love.
Just from the look of it, you can tell it's going to be absolutely delicious, right?
It even comes in a paper bag-style packaging,
making it perfect for grabbing one to munch on while you walk around.

The sweet and savory crumble of the streusel topping, the crispy texture of the waffle,
and the moist, soft interior of the waffle –
it was just perfect as a snack.
Since it's so popular, it might take about
15-20 minutes for your waffle to be ready,
but the unique visual and the sweet, savory goodness were totally worth the wait.
If you love Hong Kong waffles, you absolutely have to try this!
Hong Kong Food: It's More Divisive Than You Think!

Today, for those of you planning a trip to Hong Kong,
I've introduced eight amazing Hong Kong eateries worth visiting.
Hong Kong cuisine can be quite divisive, so while it suits my palate perfectly,
it might not always appeal to everyone.
However, the places I've recommended today are all spots that my entire family enjoyed,
without any strong preferences or dislikes.
For dishes that might be a bit more polarizing, I've made sure to note that they might not be for everyone,
so please keep that in mind!
