Victoria Peak Tram Hong Kong: Sky Terrace 428 & Crowd Tips

Last October, I planned my Hong Kong trip, and as fate would have it, it coincided with a major public holiday: the National Day celebrations. While other tourist spots were manageable, the crowds waiting for the Peak Tram on a Friday evening were truly at their 'peak'! It was quite an experience.^^

For round-trip Peak Tram and Sky Terrace tickets, I highly recommend booking in advance. It's not only more affordable but also guarantees your spot (they can sell out!) and significantly cuts down on your wait time at the station. I purchased my Klook package myself and was extremely satisfied.

Last October, during the National Day holiday, this was the scene on the way up from Central Station to catch the Peak Tram... I hadn't even joined the official queue yet, but it was already bustling from across the street.

I started queuing at 6:20 PM. This was the line specifically for those who had already booked their tickets online! If I had opted for on-site purchase, I would have had to join a separate ticket purchase line first, making it even more chaotic. Seriously, I can't recommend booking in advance enough.

After the seemingly endless outdoor queue, we crossed the street to start queuing again indoors. Inside, you can learn about the tram's origins and history. There was even busking to entertain those waiting, and we ascended several escalators as the line snaked through.

Finally, at 7:09 PM, we were right at the main gate, just moments before boarding the tram. This is where the organized lines started to dissipate, and it became a bit of a 'game of wits' to secure a good spot!

Did you think it was over? Nope! Even after the main gate opened, they regulate the flow to prevent overcrowding and ensure each tram car is filled efficiently. With a bit of quick maneuvering, I finally boarded at 7:25 PM!

During the National Day Holiday: From starting the queue to boarding the Peak Tram

To best enjoy the stunning Hong Kong city views from the Peak Tram itself, aim for the **right side when going up** and the **left side when coming down**. I stood for the ride, which gave me even more freedom to take it all in.

The Peak Tram is surprisingly speedy and climbs to an impressive height, making for a thrilling ride! Make sure to hold on tight.

You'll alight at the Peak Tower building, which houses a variety of shops, including souvenir stores, Tai Cheong Bakery, popular cafe chains, and even Madame Tussauds Museum.

Sky Terrace 428 Observatory

Take the escalators within the building all the way to the very top. At the entrance to Sky Terrace 428, your ticket will be checked before you can enter.

Sky Terrace 428 tickets are sometimes sold separately from the round-trip Peak Tram tickets. However, since you've already made it up the tram, and the price difference isn't significant, it's usually best to purchase them as a combined package when booking.

If you buy on-site, it will naturally be more expensive. (HK$75, approximately ~$10)

I hadn't realized Victoria Peak was so high, but even with the crowds, the panoramic Hong Kong night view was absolutely breathtaking. My jaw literally dropped!

Even though I'd seen countless photos, experiencing it in person was a completely different feeling.

Sky Terrace also has official photographers. I love Hong Kong's night view so much, and I wanted to capture myself with it, so I waited in line for a photo.

While the price was a bit steep, the photographer skillfully guided my poses, and the final results were so fantastic that it was well worth the wait and the cost!

With so many people ascending, what about coming down? While not as long as the ascent, there's still a considerable wait to catch the tram back down. It's a good idea to spend ample time enjoying the views and amenities at Peak Tower before heading down.

Once I finally made it down, seeing the almost empty queue for ascending trams was a little disheartening after my long wait! If you're worried about the waiting times, there's no need to cling to the idea of catching the sunset. Since Victoria Peak is primarily for enjoying the night view, I highly recommend visiting later, closer to closing time, to potentially avoid the worst of the crowds.
