How to Get to the Hong Kong Observation Wheel

It's also known as the Observation Wheel or the AIA Ferris Wheel.
That's because it's operated by AIA, a Hong Kong insurance company.
You'll constantly see AIA advertisements displayed in the center of the Ferris wheel.
If you just search "AIA" on Google Maps, the Hong Kong Observation Wheel will pop up right at the top.
It's such a massive Ferris wheel, so it's not hard to find at all.
It's also super close to the ferry pier where you catch the ferry from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui.
Hong Kong Observation Wheel Operating Hours & Ticket Prices
Let's check out the Hong Kong Observation Wheel's operating hours!
Monday–Thursday, it's open from 12 PM to 10 PM, with the last boarding at 9:30 PM.
Friday–Sunday and public holidays, it runs from 11 AM to 11 PM, with the last boarding at 10:30 PM.
Each ride takes you around three times.
It lasts about 15–20 minutes.

Ages 3–11: HK$10
Seniors (65+)/Disabled: HK$10
Under 3 years old: Free
Private Gondola (max 8 people): HK$160
Up to 8 people can ride in one gondola.
If you want to ride exclusively with your group, you'll need to purchase a private gondola ticket.
In this case, you'll need to pay the full cost for 8 people, regardless of your group size.

What's the Best Time to Ride the Hong Kong Observation Wheel? Is Sunset a Good Idea?
I went in the evening, aiming to catch the sunset!
I started queuing at 6 PM and waited for an hour.
It was exactly 7 PM when I boarded, and about 20 minutes into the ride, I got to see the sun setting.
Honestly, the view wasn't particularly more spectacular just because the sun was setting.
In fact, the sunlight was so intense it hurt my eyes.
The best time to ride is when there's the shortest queue.
Weekday working hours, when neither students nor office workers are around, would probably be the best.
The queue is long during sunset hours on weekends.
Which Seats Offer the Best View?
To be honest, choosing your seat often comes down to luck or a bit of boldness.
The attendants usually assign groups of 8 people on their own.
When you board, you'll naturally move inwards, finding your spot.
The prime seat is the one on the left, right by the door as you step into the cabin.
If you happen to be the last to board, you might just snag that lucky spot!
If you're feeling a bit cheeky, you could just plop down in the door-side seat right away.
However, that might make things a little awkward when others are trying to board.
I was lucky enough to be the last one to board, and since everyone before me had moved inwards, I ended up with a fantastic seat.
It's definitely much better for snapping photos and soaking in the Central view.
If you end up on the right, you'll mostly be looking at a construction view.
But with full glass windows, honestly, there isn't a bad seat in the house.
You'll get a great view no matter where you sit.
Plus, the air conditioning was on, making for a pleasant 20-minute ride.
If you have the option, remember to aim for that left, door-side seat!
Hong Kong Observation Wheel: Top Tips!
Queueing and line etiquette.
Let me tell you a bit about the queuing situation.
Funnily enough, I had this idea that there might be some pushing and shoving, or people cutting in line.
But surprisingly, everyone queued up perfectly, with no issues at all.
So don't fret, just join the queue!
Hong Kong Observation Wheel: How long is the wait?
The day I visited, there was a free event happening, so the wait was longer than usual.
I asked around, and apparently, the usual waiting time is about 20 minutes.
But that can really vary, depending on the day.
My wait started from the very outermost metal structure.

So, if you walk past and the queue starts from this very spot, you should budget about an hour.
Free Ride Event
Anyone planning a visit to Hong Kong in July?
If you happen to be there on July 7th, you can ride for free.
This day marks the birthday of Anson Lo, a member of the Hong Kong idol group, Mirror.
His fan club generously provides free Ferris wheel tickets to the public.
I only found out about this after arriving in Hong Kong myself!
I'd heard news that even Star Ferry and tour bus rides were being offered for free.
However, when I actually went to the Star Ferry and tour bus areas, it turned out they weren't free.
It seems there was a separate, specific ticket distribution method for those.
But the Observation Wheel itself was indeed free, that's for sure.
You just need to head to the main ticket booth to grab your ticket.
Honestly, HKD 20 is a pretty modest amount, only ~$2 at today's exchange rate.
I'd actually recommend paying the small fee and riding on a less crowded day instead of going for the free option.
Since it's free for everyone, a huge crowd gathered.
My Recommendation?
It's worth riding at least once, but it's not worth waiting an hour for.
If the queue is too long, I recommend coming another time.
If the line is short, it's ~$2, so definitely go for it!
Book the cheapest tickets for around ~$2 per person
Hong Kong has many tall buildings, so there are plenty of ways to enjoy the views.
You don't necessarily need to see them from the Hong Kong Observation Wheel.
What are the precautions for the Hong Kong Observation Wheel?
There are a few things to keep in mind when riding the Hong Kong Observation Wheel.
First, if the weather isn't good, operations might be suspended, so always check the forecast.
It rains quite often, so light rain isn't usually an issue.
However, if a typhoon warning is issued, operations might be suspended, just like with all other facilities in Hong Kong.
Also, wait times can be long, so it's a good idea to allow plenty of time for your visit.
At first, I had ambitious plans to ride the Ferris wheel and then take a tour bus.
But due to the long wait, I had to give up on the tour bus.
Also, those with a fear of heights should be cautious.
The Ferris wheel operates very slowly and steadily, so it's not inherently scary.
But with its full glass windows and considerable height, it might feel a little daunting for some.
The Hong Kong Observation Wheel: Worth a Ride At Least Once!
So, that concludes my review and information about the Hong Kong Observation Wheel!
Standing at 60 meters tall, the Hong Kong Observation Wheel offers panoramic views of Hong Kong's magnificent cityscape.
The view of Victoria Harbour from inside the gondola is truly beautiful.
Well, since I'd already waited an hour, I might as well enjoy it.
The interior of the observation wheel is spacious and comfortable, making for a pleasant ride.
The air conditioning worked well, so I could enjoy the views comfortably even on a hot day.
If you have time during your Hong Kong trip, it's worth checking out for a ride!
Honestly though, instead of waiting an hour for a free ride,
it's better to go on a weekday when it's not free, as you can ride for around ~$2 per adult,
so I recommend visiting on a weekday afternoon when it's less crowded!
Book the cheapest tickets for around ~$2 per person
Next time, I'll introduce you to another famous Hong Kong attraction.
From Monday to Thursday, it operates from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with the last boarding at 9:30 PM. From Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, it operates from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with the last boarding at 10:30 PM.
Adults are HK$20, children aged 3-11, seniors aged 65+, and persons with disabilities are HK$10. Children under 3 are free. A private gondola, which can accommodate up to 8 people, costs HK$160.
It is recommended to sit in the left seat closest to the door when you enter the gondola. From this spot, you can get a good view of the Central city skyline and the carousel, while the opposite side mainly offers a view of construction.
The Hong Kong Observation Wheel completes 3 rotations per ride, taking a total of about 15 to 20 minutes.
